Enjoyed the video? Feel free to leave a like, comment, or subscribe so I'll know if I should make more Xenoblade content!
I've wanted to make a video on Xenoblade Chronicles, one of my favorite series, for years. I've held back due to a lack of proper equipment and fear of reception, but I've been so inspired by Xenoblade Chronicles 2 that I knew it was finally time to make a video. I try to cover my experience with the series leading up to Xenoblade 2's release and why others and myself appreciate this title so much.

Funny to come back here after beating Xenoblade DE where they actually changed the key collar of Alvis into... a red crystal that has the exact same shape as the two Aegises' core crystals. No doubt allowed at this point, Alvis is definitely the third lost Aegis.

I think it is also worth mentioning that XB2 also connected the the series back to Xenosaga and to an extend Xenogears with the reintroduction of the Zohar and all the lore attached to it as well as some smaller connections here and there. XB2 is a great sequel to all that is Xeno

Yeah the conduit is pretty much the conduit. If you look into the history of xeno you will learn about perfect works and how xenoblade seems to be the true attempt to tell the perfect works story to completion. Saga and gears was a bit of a mess and were never really seen to the end.

They can't connect it with the two others since Monolith don't own the rights to them. Namco is kind enough to let them use some Xenosaga characters as "cameos" but that doesn't mean they can tie the plot of Saga into this without violating copyright. Gear is also owned by Square Enix so good luck with getting anything related to it. That's why most of the concepts found in Blade are named differently. It's probably more a retelling that it is trying to connect everything, which is great if we finally get to see Takahashi's complete story at one point.

I don't want that to happen. if we see what happens after the events of XB1 it would kinda go against the whole conclusion of not knowing what the future has in store because it would be giving us what that future has in store. The reason it doesnt get praise is because it has a god awful dub, a worse story than xb1, shitty characters, plot holes everywhere, and many other reasons. The experiment cutscene might be the only good part ot xenoblade 2. The rest of it is just god awful. The one cutscene is basically the only thing good about it. Literally thats the only good part, thats why this video almost entirely focuses on that chapter, because its the only good part of the game.

@@colemcegg3894 biggest stretch I've ever seen the dub is over hated by a mile and is only soured by poor voice direction at times courtesy of the dumb fucks who were in charge of them. characters being good or bad is subjective but shitty is just flat wrong. Dunban was one dimensional as hell and Riki's shtick is "nopon acts kiddy but is a good dad". Fresh out of XB1 DE and disagree with the story being better than 2. Overall I preferred it, especially with the final few chapters to wrap it all up as well as Torna. XB1 just had better pacing and occasional better direction. Some characters in XB1 get straight up forgotten about at times with one of them being in your freaking party lmao. Sharla comes to mind in that regard. She never really does anything and is just there. Also no it does not have plotholes "everywhere". One's you might perceive as such most likely have explanations you missed or are minor and you're exaggerating.

Personally I believe that Pyra and Mythra retained their memories. First of all, they’re built different and don’t usually follow the same rules as other blades. Second, in the cutscene where they come back, poppi hugs them and they seem to have a conversation. If Mythra was randomly hugged by a robo girl she didn’t know I don’t think she would have had a friendly conversation due to Mythra personality. And thirdly, I just want a happy ending.

To me, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is also a love letter to JRPGs. It just highlights so many great things about them, the banter, the anime inspiration in many JRPGs, the great balance of comedy, action and gripping moments we love them for... and well, Gacha is popular in Japan too. I love Xenoblade, 1, X and 2 and I'm even kind of hyped for that new IP Monolith teased. XCX has great lore and a lot of interesting stuff in it considering what happened in XC2 but you shouldn't play it like it is a regular Xenoblade game, it was made to be different and focused on the exploration side of thing. If you go in with that mindset, it will be way easier to get into it. The main story is also not the bulk of the story and XCX probably has the best side quests out of the three games, some even containing vital informations about the world that you don't get in the main story. Like I said, the game reward exploration more than anything.

Honestly, I was dissatisfied with XC2's ending. I wanted to actually see the land, like how it shows everyone in their daily lives at the end of XC1. I love the ending nonetheless, I just wish that the story DLC was a sequel, rather than a prequel. Just 'cause we already kind of knew what happened. I just want more! Slice of Life anime with all characters, please! Or....wait. What if....the last Xenoblade game is all the characters from each game on the same continent?! Having a full story-driven game is both a blessing and a curse for me. On the bright side, you don't have to keep waiting for the next episode. But on the downside, it ends. Then again, I have yet to have another story driven game as deep as Xenoblade. The closest thing I have is CrossCode(a real gem, btw it's amazing), but that doesn't go to the bottom of the ocean like Xenoblade does. I'm ranting at this point, but I just have to vent.

Wolverine101 Hmmmm, not quite. I don’t really think that’s it. Weren’t the Aegis’s created to have a specific purpose? Like, Pneuma, Logos, Ontos, each had their specific purpose? Also, doesn’t Mythra say that Malos’s only purpose was to destroy? Whatever. But, you may have a point, because Rex says something like “if only I was earlier...”, which kinda suggests that if Rex was Malos’s driver instead of Amalthus, none of the event in Xb2 would have happened.

Great video, I think you did a great job covering just about everything that makes the game special to fans, and it's def a game I wish I could experience for the first time again. Though, I think I have a couple of minor gripes, though it might be out of bias since I'm someone who genuinely likes Rex. So first off, while I get how it can look to a first time viewer (and also Rex/Nia shippers), I don't get why everyone seems to act like the ch. 7 moment with Nia's like the worst thing he could have done, since Nia wasn't hurt by it and just laughed it off, and even encourages Rex to step towards Pyra and Mythra at the end. There's also that post battle dialogue with blade Nia, and of course the phantasm of Nia, which very much implies he's aware of how it might have come off. Who knows, maybe I'm thinking too much onto this. Second, I was gonna comment on how I wasn't too fond of how you seemed to have wrote off all of Rex's voice as "bad" all because of the ch. 1 scream, but then 20:07 came along, and I'm glad you gave that a shout out. Honestly, I just personally feel like the hate on Rex's voice is just as, if not more overblown as the hate he gets as a character. Plus, I've also seen your other vids that show at some dialogue, such as when the group reaches Elysium in chapter 10, and of course the ending. He's still capable of showing emotion pretty well, so I feel like it's possible the voice direction screwed some things. Who knows, if Torna is of any indication, our best bets for even more of a better voice directed Rex could either be Smash Bros. or Future Connected in XCDE. Time will tell. But enough about that, your videos could really use more attention. They're underrated gems.

My joy at the combat in Xenoblade chronicles 2 is hard to express all I can say is that Monolith Soft are master's at JRPG combat and even today I can't put this game down, even the lower enemies I challenge just to battle constantly, omg Monolith soft should make a fighting game. They should at least got goty 2017 for RPG combat system, Alot of people sleep on this game and it's depressing.

Great video man! I agree with you that the ending is up to the interpretation of the player. Personally I feel like Pyra and Mythra don't maintain their memories. The game has plenty of instances where blades forget their drivers, so you could see that as foreshadowing to the ending. And the credits song lyrics feels like a farewell from the pyra/mythra/pneuma that we knew. And even though they wanted to originally see the architect to ask if they could die to end their never ending suffering, they found a reason to live instead through Rex. In the end they get their way, they die protecting the person who gave their life a new meaning, and a new version of them will live on without carrying the guilt and weight of their past. It's a whole new beginning for the new Pyra and Mythra and Rex will once again help them out anyway he can. That's my interpretation anyway.

I am one of those that went into XC2 with the impression that it was its own game. I actually didn't pick up on the connected universe until Klaus's exposition dump, i.e. I didn't pick up on the streak across the planet being a reference to 1. Despite not knowing a whole lot about the first game, I still really enjoyed XC2's story (albeit that I watched a cutscene compilation. I know, shame on me.) There were times where I legitimately cried and I enjoyed the silliness and depth of these characters a lot. Once I finally break down and buy a damn Switch, XC2 will definitely be on my list. I'm already in love with it from the story alone.

I went into X2 absolutely blind, I knew nothing - except that Indol was bad, since my brother spoiled this part for me. Thanks, bro. So, every time I got to meet with Amalthus, I was terrified he would just pounce on me. Anywho, I spent the entire game trying to work out how X1 and 2 fit together. Given the naming, I expected it to be a sequel, and figured that the downed Bionis might have somehow become the titans of X2. And while Gormott resembled the Gaur Plains a lot, this theory of mine didn't hold up, as some places clearly didn't match those from the previous game. So, I just gave up on trying to figure this out. When Klaus made his first appearance, I was ecstatic, though I still had no idea what was going on. Until the end. Man, what a revelation. Oh, and it's pretty much confirmed now that Alvis is Ontos. Just feel the need to point this out ^^

One thing. You say Rex is a generic protagonist, but I highly disagree. Yes, he starts off as a sort of Mary Sue, but about halfway through the story, the entire point of his character arc (which he has) is that he can't be a Mary Sue. No matter how stubborn he his, no matter how much he truly wants to, no matter how many promises he makes for it, he cannot save everyone. This, in turn, changes his attitude from a generic, always optimistic despite the odds type an ttitude to one of deep depression, one without hope. This all happens right after Pyra is captured by Torna in Tantal. This I think is the perfect arc for his character. They took what was initially a cliche of a character and turned him into a human being of a character. Cliches are ok as long as something original is done with them, as seen with Rex.
@sj4iy
@sj4iy 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Rex is not a "Mary Sue" at all. In fact, I think he doesn't use the right definition in the first place. A Mary Sue has no flaws and no weaknesses. That's not Rex at all. Rex isn't always good at what he does. He makes mistakes, and makes bad decisions. He doesn't have all the answers, and there are plenty of times where the other characters are giving him advice. But people mistake his naivety and optimism as 'generic' and completely miss the fact that, without that characteristic of Rex, the theme of the entire game would fall apart. Rex needs that hope in humanity in order to combat Amalthus' (and Malos') belief that humanity is regressing and needs to be wiped out. Rex is Amalthus' foil. Add in Torna's storyline and it becomes even more necessary, because Rex has to succeed where Addam failed. Addam worried about becoming like Amalthus by losing control of Mythra...which ultimately led to his inability to control her true power which caused the destruction of Torna. Rex only worries about helping Pyra/Mythra in their goal to reach Elysium. He's never scared of them in the way that Addam was because that's not the type of person he is. Rex's situation, his station in life, his lack of experience and his personality all make Rex the perfect driver for Pyra/Mythra while Addam's nobility, responsibility, and lack of experience all made him less so.

a Mary Sue has nothing to do with flaws/weaknesses. it's more about how much the world of the story revolves around that single character. though I agree with your point that Rex wouldn't even fall into the category of an overly perfect character because of that arc of him trying too hard to be an ideal hero but coming up short many times.

Just checked. It's apparently a character depicted as a strong character without flaw or weakness. So technically, even if the story doesn't revolve around them, the character can be a Sue. A good example of a non protagonist Sue would be Escanor from 七つの 大罪 at least during the day. He's without weakness, both mentally and physically, but the focus and heroic depictions are still mostly on Meliodas.

I feel like whenever xenoblade x2 comes out we will see a more expansive story. damn, if the affinity wasn't as hard to build as it is. it definitely would have made up for the lack of story content. haha. honestly, even after the years I'm still hoping for a switch port of xenoblade X. its one of my favorite games of all time. from the combat, to the online implementation (that, I hope gets expanded in x2), the large open world filled with things to do, and with the many, many characters you can come to know. even if not to the extent of a character you spend 50+ hours bonding with.

I was beyond excited to see that xenoblade 1 was gonna get a sequel on the switch and actually be released that same year. This was definitely my system seller but man, the game was not in the best way when it was released at the end of 2017. It really felt like monolithsoft and nintendo released the game 6 months too quickly. It was a complete game sure but that UI was a mess at launch. The map showed us on good info, the game did not let you skip any dialogue for giving items and merc missions which meant you could not spam their favorite food to gain trust if you did not want to si through mins of dialogue beforehand. The quickwarp function just brought you to big list to quick travel rather than a local map. I am sure I missed other features but those stuck out out to me pretty badly. Granted, I played and beat the game in that state, put hundreds of hours in, but I could not in good heart say that xenoblade 2 surpassed the first game at launch. It hurt to me to say that the game would b a cautious recommendation after initially saying it was my system seller. Now, the game had gotten so much better with constant updates and improvements in 2018. YOu have the amazing dlc as well as challenge mode, NG+ with new blades and even more customizations and lore to take away fromt he game. They gave us great quality of life improvements to make any sort of item/level grinding like 120% less of a chore now. I consider it a great game but it took a while to get there. You can't say that about the first game. That was a complete game at launch and we judged it and still judge it based on that. As amazing as the ost in this game is, xenoblade 1 ost is what i consider a once in a decade soundtrack where every single song grab your attention right away. Xenoblade 2 ost just did not do that with the exception being mor ardain. I have played the game for nearly 600+ hours now with NG+ included and I still prefer the first game's OST despite the phenomenol job the band, Ace, did for this. Storywise, xenoblade 2 is more lightheerated story with pretty low stakes compared to the first game. The ending is where it gets crazy but the overall story did not have that agency xenoblade 1 did. Even by the end, I am not sure what Rex's answer to Malos is. Maybe I just did not get what he actually learned by the end. It felt more like him reinforcing what he knew that just learning something new.

So about the question at the end, "do they lose their memories and does the cast get transported to shulk's new world", I've flip flopped about the memories, but I would think Alvis/Ontos could have transported the inhabitants of Bionis and Mechonis back into the original world due to the potential effects the conduit leaving Alrest would have had on the world created by the experiment. It's unknown until DE and Future Connected is in the hands of the players, but that seems like a likely answer, especially now that Klaus is gone and Alrest no longer has a "Creation God"

I am also a huge fan of how they implement lore into the combat system while keeping it very clearly Xenoblade combat, it leads to very distinct combat systems with different layers of depth and customisation built upon the same identity. Funnily enough, from what I had heard before playing XCDE both the cast and the story of the original were much better in their eyes, some people even outright bashing the characters in XC2, especially their designs. I know character design is subjective to a degree but I love the vibrant designs of XC2's main cast more than I do those of XC1 (which I still like a lot), but sometimes it makes me feel as though these people had not played (or at least had not made the effort to understand) XC2 the way they criticised it for things which it didn't lack, and now that I've played XCDE, I can also say they made comparisons with the original (saying it did many things much better, both regarding character development and storytelling) which are straight up not true. I don't want to go into detail but, yes, they're both "anime", and yes, they are both amazing for reasons both alike and different, and that's something that should be celebrated. On the Rex vs Shulk thing, I find myself liking Rex more than Shulk (they are both great characters and protagonists who suit their stories) but I can't deny Adam Howden makes me almost shake in anticipation every time there's a tense moment with Shulk in it. As someone who played XCDE after XC2, the original story (and the videos made about it) made me hold its sequel's in even higher regard, so I have to wholeheartedly agree with you, it is an AMAZING sequel to an AMAZING game.
