Shemp was my favorite stooge. And fun fact shemp was the original 3rd member before curly. So he’s technically not really a replacement. But I think after shooting a few episodes he didn’t want to do it anymore or something like that. So he got replace with Curly. But then Curly got sick and died so Shemp came Back

I just did some research about the episode Brideless Groom and found out that one of the supporting actresses in the episode named Nancy Saunders, died on 6/13/2020 at the age of 94. That’s fairly recent. I like doing research to see if any Stooge supporting actors/actresses are still alive. Here are some fun facts about the episode: Emil Sitka is the name of the actor who played the justice of the peace. On his headstone it says "Hold Hands, You Lovebirds". I think that is very sweet. One more fun fact is that during the scene where Christine McIntyre thinks Shemp is her cousin Basil and then proceeds to slap him around and then finally punch him through the door. Christine had trouble doing the scene because she didn’t want to hurt Shemp. This is how the director Edward Bernds described it: "In the story, Shemp had a few hours in which to get married if he wanted to inherit his uncle's fortune. He called on Christine McIntyre, who mistook him for her cousin (Basil), took him to her apartment and greeted him with hugs and kisses. Then the real cousin phoned and she accused Shemp of kissing her, as it were, under false pretenses. At this point, she was supposed to slap Shemp around. Lady that she was, McIntyre couldn't do it right; she dabbed at him daintily, afraid of hurting him. After a couple of bad takes Shemp pleaded with her. "Honey," he said, "if you want to do me a favor, cut loose and do it right. A lot of half-hearted slaps hurt more than one good one. Give it to me, Chris, and let's get it over with". She got up her courage and, on the next take, let Shemp have it. It wound up as a whole series of slaps - the timing was beautiful; they rang out like pistol shots. Shemp was knocked into a chair, bounced up, met another ringing slap, fell down again, scrambled up, trying to explain, only to get another stinging slap. Then Chris delivered a haymaker - a right that knocked Shemp through the door. When the take was over, Shemp was groggy, really groggy. His nose was broken. Chris put her arms around him and apologized tearfully. "It's alright, honey," Shemp said painfully. "I said you should cut loose and you did. You sure as hell did!"

There's a lot of great lines in this short, but my favorite line in this is "you wouldn't hit a lady with that?... use this, it's bigger". That's a very good joke. Second favorite line is "that was before I read the papers. Now I accept. Okay, toots. Let er rip" 😂 the timing and talent that actress has👌 I also felt the same way about Shemp as you did. It wasn't until a few years ago that I began to appreciate him as a stooge.

Shemp has always been my favorite Stooge. He is the original. Ted Healey and His Stooge. He is also the oldest of the Howard brothers. Fun Fact, in the scene where Christine McIntyre is supposed to slap cousin Basil she couldn't make it look real (she was too nice to hit) so Shemp whispered something derogatory to her and those slap on film are real. He never said what he whispered. He did make up with her and she forgave him.

Shemp is just as funny as Curly, but in a different way. One thing that makes them both funny, is what you do with their hair. Of course Curly's name itself is a joke off his no hair, and we consistently see him grabbed there, and Moe comes up empty (Curly had an empty skull too you know). Shemp's hair is funny too, because it always goes flying when he gets beat up, etc. I think Shemp had the longest hair of the whole team.
@thefreeman8791
@thefreeman8791 2 жыл бұрын
Yes but Curly was called Curly because he had curly red hair. When he applied to replace Shemp he had his hair grown out and a mustache but he was told that curly hair wasn’t funny so he went and shaved it all off and came back and asked if he was funny now. In real life. Shemp and Moe and Curly were brothers and Larry was a childish friend of theirs. Their names in the show were their real life nicknames. Shemp’s real name was Samuel. But when his mother, who was from Lithuania, tried to say Sam it sounded like Shemp and it stuck. Moe’s real name was Moses and Moe was his nickname. Curly was curly because of his hair and Larry’s real name was Lawrence.

Shemp wasn't Curly's replacement. He was one of the original three along with Moe and Larry. Shemp and Moe were brothers. After a while, Shemp decided to go off and have a solo career, and that's when Curly joined the group. He was also the brother of Moe and Shemp. The group achieved their greatest popularity during that period, then Curly had a serious stroke, and Shemp returned to the group. That's no doubt why you thought he was a replacement for Curly, but originally Curly was a replacement for Shemp. When Shemp died of a heart attack, he was followed by Joe Palma (AKA "The Fake Shemp"), then Joe Besser, then "Curly" Joe DeRita.

"Hold hands, you lovebirds" soon became the most famous line in the short, and is even on Emil Sitka's tombstone. Shemp left the group because he didn't trust Ted Healy. Shemp, Moe and Curly are brothers with Curly is the youngest out of them. Interesting story about Shemp. Before they were the "three stooges " they worked with Ted Healy, it was originally Moe, Larry, and Shemp. Over time Shemp wanted to move on and with Moe, Shemp and Curly all being brothers, they had Curly replace Shemp and they left Ted and did there own thing. Curly unfortunately couldn't continue after a stroke and health problems so Shemp took over. Unfortunately, Curly passed in 1952 and Shemp in 1955.

You have great taste in comedy, and I enjoyed this with you. Your reactions were spot on. A lot of comedy critics consider Shemp to be the most polished of the Howard brothers in his technique. My favorite Shemp line comes from the Pardon My Clutch episode when after Larry gets lassoed around the neck and hoisted up with the luggage , and Shemp scolds him and says; "You can't ride that way, you'll unbalance the load !"

I have every 3 Stooges episode from Curly to Joe Besser from 1934-1959 and Joe Durita from 1959 until their retirement and Larry's first stroke in 1970; actually Shemp was actually with Moe and Larry and Ted Healy until 1934 and he decided to go pursue a movie career so he was replaced by Curly from 1934 until his first stroke in 1947 and then he came back from 1947 until his death in 1955

I’ve been watching this episode since I was a kid and would rewind almost every scene that cracked me up. Especially when Moe and Shemp were stuck in the phone booth and the expression on Larry’s face after getting punched. Watching this for the first time as a toddler my dad and I wouldn’t stop rewinding the part where Shemp hits his face on the piano. I have so many memories with this episode from watching it with my dad to watching it with my friends and seeing others react to it is so awesome.

@3:46min Larry was an accomplished musician. He could play violin 🎻 💀 viola cello or bass fiddle 🎻 as well as piano 🎹. It is never ceased to amaze me how he seemed to be the most underrated Stooge. He was a very laid back type.

12:38 The punch was real. Shemp told the actress to hit him as hard as she can. As she refused, he said “Honey, if you want to do a favour, cut loose and do it right.”

Christine McIntyre looked like she was really connecting with some of those slaps. She was also a classically trained singer. When she answers the phone and says "Hello" to Uncle Basil, it seems to have a very melodic tone to it and her soprano voice seems to come out.

She was very reluctant to hit Shemp, and he had to ask her to cut loose and let him have it. Did she ever. The director said her slaps rang out like pistol shots.

@@markschildberg1667 Yeah, she really let him have it. I love it when he puts up his arms to protect himself and Christine says "Don't you dare strike me! Taking advantage of a poor helpless, defenseless woman!". Really funny. My favorite Shemp scene.

Actually Curly was a replacement for Shemp, who was a replacement for Curly. In the original lineup it was Ted Healy and his stooges Shemp, Moe and Larry. Shemp went solo and the Stooges separated from Healy. Shemp came back after Curly had to step down.

In a previous short, Moe and Larry ended up marrying Shemp's sisters. The inheritance was merely a ruse to trick Shemp into getting married too.

That short was actually several years later than this one, using stock footage. One of the cost cutting techniques that the studio used in it's shorts department was to make shorts that consisted of anywhere from 50% to 90% recycled footage from prior efforts andenough new footage for passing them off as something new. That's where the "fake Shemps" came from.

The timeline goes like this it started as Moe, Larry & Shemp. Shemp left to pursue a solo career. He was replaced with Curly, Curly suffered a series of small strokes between 1944 and 1946. During Half-wits holiday, he suffered a massive stroke and left to recover, Shemp came back on a temporary basis in the hopes that Curly could recover and return but it never happened (Curly died in 1952). In 1955 Shemp suddenly passed away suffering a heart attack in the back seat of a taxi. Since they had contracts to fulfill Joe Palma served as a body double and was used to finish the remaining shorts for the year (colloquially known as "fake shemp"). As a replacement they hired Joe Besser in 1957 he only stayed for a year, leaving to care for his ailing wife. But Columbia stretched it by not releasing all those shorts until 1960. Larry & Moe considered retiring but after seeing Joe DeRita at a show in Las Vegas, they brought him in and revived the act and kept it going until 1965. In 1970 they planned to revive the act again with a new travelogue series called "kook's tour" but that got shelved when Larry suffered a stroke during production of the "pilot" forcing some choppy editing with a body double and it wasnt picked up by any networks anyway. (Larry died in 1975). Joe DeRita got Moe's consent to revive the act with 2 other actors but it was poorly received. There were plans for another revival with Emil Sitka (hold hands you lovebirds) joining Moe & Joe replacing Larry as Harry but it never came to be, in 1975 Moe passed from lung cancer shortly before they were due to film a movie called The Jet Set (only about 4 months after Larry's passing). (It got reworked as blazing stewardesses with the Ritz brothers fyi). Besser passed in 1988 from heart failure, DeRita passed in 1993 from pneumonia.
