EPISODE 13
The solo motorcycle adventure around the world continues in Kazakhstan. We're making pretty good time passing through Almaty going up north but slowly things start to go wrong. After the amazing good times in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan it was time for the bad times. The main roads in Kazakhstan are busy and full of cops but the backroads are a lot more fun for a solo ride and faster too usually. Though in a remote area in a valley everything slowed down and I learned how not to cross a river on a motorcycle. In a hurry, not thinking, heavy bike with low clearance and new circumstances. Plus Alp had the beginnings of a slipping clutch but I had no clue what that was or how something like that feels. Terrible morning spending way too long in that river. The next day we had to turn around back to Almaty to replace the clutch which took five days while the Russian visa started to weight down on me. Take the time to weld the rack again, weld the panniers and weld the top frame which had broken. Also looked up information for the last stint of the motorcycle adventure through Russia, Mongolia and taking the boat to Japan. Up north in the Altai region we can't cross the border at Ridder and the rack breaks again but all was sorted in Shemonaikha before crossing the Kazakh border with Russia. Though however surreal the ride in Kazakhstan, there were some mighty beautiful areas in Kazakhstan.
Enjoy this short motorcycle documentary in Kazakhstan Put together with the video footage that I recorded back in 2014.

My name is Pedro Mota and back in 2014 I left the Netherlands on a beautiful Honda Transalp dual sport motorbike on a trip to the east end of Russia in Vladivostok. On the way there we would take a big detour through the Middle East, Central Asia and Mongolia. Little did I know back then that this would evolve into a years long motorbike travel further taking me through Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the American continent.

I know that for you laying the bike down is not fun but for me it shows that you are usually pushing the limits of you skills and the bikes ability to make something happen. Crossing rivers and riding in soft sand on a motorbike is not as easy as one might guess but you show that it can be done. Your vlogs are enjoyable.

Another incredible day in the life of Pedro; amazing riding on Alp btw. Through it all you managed to capture the moments too. Yet again, it's one of the best I've seen, but then there have been so many! Do you ever regret taking a Transalp, maybe a medium sized single? I guess, when things gets tough like that it would be nice to have a smaller/lighter machine? On moderate trails and roads, it's a do it all multi-tool, an "ADV" bike, not a dedicated off road bike, but last time I looked that's what you are on, an adventure! For me, yes, the TA is heavier than a single, but that 52° V Twin is in a world of its own. As always, ride safe.

I've never regretted it but there have been moments I wished for a lighter bike but mainly so that I could push the limit a bit more. In the end the bike could have been lighter by my own doing: not carrying tires, chain lock and panniers, the first two being at least 10kg already. Back then I was still in the "hauling it wherever it needs to go" phase which was a lot of fun even during struggles. Now I would gear it more towards offroad fun where lighter is better. But like you say, pushing 100kmh with comfort thanks to that sweet vtwin is great, especially offroad.

hahaha got to tell you, the first big river crossing i did, i picked a spot with no rocks... turned out to be soft sand in the bike was berried to to the axles haha. Was stuck there for well over an hour trying to get out. Did make it in the end. Awesome video Amazing ride looks like such an epic adventure.

Really great video bro! I’ve been looking for a RTW motorcycle vlog that can hold my attention and yours does. It’s funny, I met a Swiss rider on a ferry in Patagonia who said Central Asia was stunning...your footage confirms it even though Kazakhstan wasn’t letting you go that easy 😆 Can’t wait for the next episode and I’ll have to go through your backlog!

Cheers man! You've ridden in South America before? Don't see it in your vids. Yeah for sure, it's that perfect blend of wild environment and barely any infrastructure that makes one feel small. Check out the videos in Tajikistan. Not too far away from you if you fancy a ride over there one day. Don't let Kazakhstan trap you though!

Hi Pedro, it's really nice to see videos unfold of exactly how we want to drive. That's how I found your Bartang video. What was the offroad route in the first half? We were thinking about Turgen park and Charyn canyon areas and it seems you were passing that as well?
@iPedroMota

Awesome to be able to show you around a bit man. I went into Kazakhstan unprepared and tried to follow smaller roads which can be a maze at times. Heard about a canyon and checked it out in the south east but never really found the main area. Came in through the southern end though I think, river offshoot on the right side (point B map link) . What you see in pics is somewhere in the middle of the national part and it looks like there's a road going through it to a certain point. Worth checking out in satellite mode. Same for mountain tracks. I was randomly picking roads until the clutch got fried. Worth plotting an awesome route through those mountains along the Chinese border to the lake if possible. This is what I did more less I think: binged.it/2HsJs2c

Pedro Mota Great thanks! We have to go up North there anyway. Looking forward to your Altai video and of course Mongolia. I should have some permits ready for the border areas in Altai, but not sure if we want to spend much time there because there is already enough offroading to be done in the countries before. Anyway it should be really nice.
@iPedroMota
@iPedroMota 6 жыл бұрын
Read something about permits while trying to figure out where I crossed into Russia. When do you need them, Kazakh side? I learned a lot about the Altai region only after I'd been there and I think it's worth it to plot an unbeaten track route in the region if you have the time. Quite beautiful area.
@roland9367
@roland9367 6 жыл бұрын
Pedro Mota Roughly speaking, you have a main route as you will have taken. Anything North of that is fine, anything south of that route requires a (free) permit because it is border zone. An example is Sailugem, a nice part with nice valleys. But I can also imagine that there is some similarities with what one sees in the Stans and Mongolia. At some point you will probably find it enough?
@iPedroMota
@iPedroMota 6 жыл бұрын
I see. I'm a sucker for wide open space surrounded by large hills/mountains. A nice unsealed road through regions like that never gets old. The main Altai highway definitely is a nice ride but you'll be in Mongolia in no time. When time is a thing then more time in Mongolia would be my pick and go to the Altai section there which can be pretty swampy so extra time is good.

Hey Pedro I'm enjoying your ride man but I have to ask what brand pannier racks you have on Alp? Too bad you had so many problems man
@iPedroMota
@iPedroMota 5 жыл бұрын
Givi, but i learned to differentiate between bag and panniers racks. These were for bags, panniers need a crossbar. Once one was built in halfway through Oz all was good. Poor choice of hardware but what did I know back then. My mate got the same and first thing I had him do was to get a crossbar welded in. No issues for him all the way up the American continent.

Thanks for answering my question I forgotten to ask: insurance! EDIT: glad you are ok those river xings on loaded bike are brutal not for solo riding
@iPedroMota
@iPedroMota 6 жыл бұрын
My Dutch insurance has a pretty impressive greencard with all the Mediterranean countries on it, Iran, Russia and a couple of other interesting ones. For me in non-western countries it's a mix of do and don't though I recommend just getting it every time.
@cyclopathic998
@cyclopathic998 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, what is the name of the insurance? Place to get it? Very brave and risky going to places like that (river crossings, rockslide) without riding partner. For me it would have been end of the trip as I am smaller and have heavier bike. Maybe unloading and walking across as last ditch effort.
