Respect to this band for their interpretation. Nice to hear this piece with 2 guitars, different keyboard sounds, different players…all striving to recreate a piece of music that had a huge effect on them… and us! Bravo. Thank you Kieth for your creation. My first album purchase.

This is awful. Could someone tell me why there are TWO guitar players ruining the sound and why the keyboards are that soft in the mix? Ridiculous Mr. Sound Engineer.
@toddbaxter4878 жыл бұрын
You're an idiot. Awful?? This shows the genius of ELP. It takes five guys to do what three did! And I certainly do not think the keyboards are soft in the mix. This is a great tribute. Please post your rendition of Tarkus. There are many great ones, from Rachel Flowers to Symphony Orchestras on KZfaq. I want to see your version. Or maybe you are just a nobody critic You know: The ones that can't play become critics.
@anonymusum8 жыл бұрын
Firstly: You should learn some manners. Secondly: Listen to the begnning of Tarkus. You hardly can hear Rudess´ left hand and then compare it the the original. And thirdly: ELP´s sound was a typical trio sound without electric guitars. Keith took a guitar in his band as his right hand was nearly disabled. And at least: Who are you to ask me for my version? What kind of com is this? But you could have listened to me and my band when we played "Pictures" and other ELP tunes together with a symphony orchestra which I arranged. And of course there´s no el. guitar in my band, only an acoustic as I wouldn´t let an electric ruin my soumd.
@toddbaxter4878 жыл бұрын
Firstly, OK, maybe I was a little rude. But really? This is a tribute. This is not a band regularly playing together, it was a tribute put together for an special observance. And Greg Lake did play guitar as well as bass. And yes I would very much like to hear your band,
@anonymusum8 жыл бұрын
Well - allright then. - Keith was like a guiding star to me. He really shocked me with each new record of his bands - especially as I thought to be pretty excellent ... haha. In fact he was the much better improvisator whereas I studied at a conservatory to become a pianist and conductor. So my classical skills were more than competitive. But there was one thing beside his great skills that I loved: that unique ELP sound. Keith had a good left hand and that lineup without guitar was the only chance to bring it into play. For example that ostinatos on Tarkus or Bitches Crystal, or the power chords on Knife Edge or America, or those huge sound walls on Changing States or Jerusalem. But as a keyboardist you got to bring it in a good balance to your right hand, what means: normally the left hand should be a bit softer. But when you play with a guitar you loose all of that balance as a guitar plays just in that frequency range as your left hand. So you have to make it louder what will make your right hand louder as well. And in the end the guitarist will play louder too and that shit begins from the very start. - And another point: Most sound engineers tend to turn guitars up and keyboards down. That seems to be a matter of usualness and that´s what upsets me in general, but especially with this video. I mean Tarkus without that dominant ostinato of Rudess´ left hand but with pretty loud guitar chords instead isn´t Tarkus anymore. That´s why I don´t play with guitarists anymore - although one of my best friends is a guitar player ....

I do understand your points, and they are well thought out and articulated, I once had a sound reinforcement business and was the "Sound Engineer" I have gotten into heated discussions with some for exactly the reasons you state: favoring guitar over keyboards, especially when the keyboard part is very important to the overall song or the keyboard player is soloing. Case in point: I got into one of these heated discussions with a soundman who was doing a show for a Zep tribute band playing Kashmir. The keyboards were definitely down in the mix, which was not good for this tune. All being said though, I still think this is a wonderful tribute even with the deficiencies you note. I would like to see Jordan Rudess play with Keith's band in the future. I'm sure if they played together regularly, we would all be sufficiently impressed.
