The point of the double key gates is that they're the normal way to leave the area without using the flute or bubble wand, both of which the player might not have yet.

"The cats are a looming threat"- A thought all cat owners have. Still really curious about the implications of the animals and the secrets of this game. Really though, it's clever and spooky design.

1:02:32 "What inspires this?" Good question. Interviews with the developer (Billy Basso) unfortunately haven't specifically mentioned the power-ups (other than "it's like Mega Man, where you can go get the abilities in kind of any order you want"), but I feel the first step was deciding on a theme (kids toys). After that, you could decide on what you want each power to be (vertical movement, horizontal movement, travelling, etc.), and see if you can come up with an object in that theme that fits the bill (the disc for horizontal movement, the bubble wand for vertical movement, the flute for travelling, etc.). The slink does feel unique (it's also the developer's favorite tool according to a Reddit AMA), because it's used to interact with buttons the player might have not access to, but it depends on gravity to work (it reminds me of the bombchus from Zelda, but with more limited mechanics). Like you said, it's leveraging staircases, which is amusing since you'd usually just think of those as platforms (and not something that has any another mechanical use). So one way to reach that idea would be asking yourself that question: what kids toy leverages staircases/platforms? It's interesting that the slink and the yo-yo have similar functions (interacting with things you might not be able to reach), but in different ways (the yo-yo has fine control but shorter range, while the slink has less control but longer range).

Loved the game, but there are definitely times where the joy of discovery gets overshadowed by the annoyance of having to start sections over and over again just b/c to mistime one jump

Yes, it's a classic puzzle problem, when execution of the thing you need to do is what gating you off... very common on any "puzzle-platformer".

Capybaras are from the amazon and they do has natural predators they are still very chill but the rodent from new Zealand that just hang out are quokkas
