Are Catholic beliefs and practices biblical? The question that concerns every church and its practices should be, "Is this biblical?" If a teaching is biblical (taken in context), it should be accepted. If it is not, it should be rejected. God is more interested in whether a church does His will and obeys His Word than whether it can trace its lineage back to Jesus' apostles. Jesus was very concerned about the Word of God being rejected to follow traditions of men (Mark 7:7). Traditions are not inherently wrong...there are some good and valuable traditions. To reiterate, the concern should be whether a doctrine, practice or tradition is biblical. How then does the Catholic Church compare to the Word of God? Salvation: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that salvation is regenerated through baptism and maintained through the Catholic sacraments, except through a willful act of sin that destroys the sanctified state of grace. The Bible teaches that we are saved by grace, which we receive through simple faith (Ephesians 2:8-9), and that good works are the result of a changed heart worked out in salvation (Ephesians 2:10; I Corinthians 5:17) and through the fruit of new life in Christ (John 15). Assurance of salvation: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that Assurance of salvation: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that salvation is not guaranteed or certain. 1 John 5:13 says that the reason for writing 1 John was so that believers could be ASSURED of their salvation. Good works: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that Christians are saved by meritorious works (beginning with baptism), and that salvation is maintained by good works (receiving the sacraments, confessing sins to a priest, etc.). The Bible teaches that Christians are saved by grace through faith, completely apart from works (Titus 3:5; Ephesians 2:8-9, Galatians 3:10-11; Romans 3:19-24). Baptism: In the New Testament, baptism ALWAYS comes AFTER saving faith in Christ. Baptism is not the reason for salvation; it is faith in the gospel that saves (1 Corinthians 1:14-18; Romans 10:13-17). The Roman Catholic Church teaches the regeneration of infants through baptism, a practice never found in Scripture. The only possible reference to the baptism of infants that the Roman Catholic Church can point to is that the entire household of the jailer in Philippi was baptized, as recorded in Acts 16:33. However, the context never mentions infants. Acts 16:31 explains that salvation comes by faith. Paul addressed the whole household in verse 31, and the whole household believed (verse 34). This passage only supports the baptism of those who have already believed, not that of infants. Prayer: The Roman Catholic Church teaches Catholics not only to pray to God, but also to petition Mary and the saints for their prayers. Contrary to this, Scripture teaches us to pray to God alone (Matthew 6:9; Luke 18:1-7). Priesthood: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that there is a difference between priests and "commoners," where the New Testament teaches that all believers hold the priesthood (1 Peter 2:9). Sacraments: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that a believer is filled with grace by receiving the sacraments. This teaching is nowhere to be found in Scripture. Confession: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that, unless the believer is incapacitated, the only way to be forgiven of sins is through confession to a priest. In contrast, Scripture teaches that confession of sins is made to God alone (1 John 1:9). Mary: The Roman Catholic Church teaches, among other things, that Mary is the Queen of Heaven, everlasting Virgin and with redeemer who ascended to heaven. In the Holy Scriptures she is portrayed as an obedient, faithful servant of God who became the mother of Jesus. None of the other attributes mentioned by the Roman Catholic Church have their basis in the Bible. The view that Mary was the co-redemptrix and is another mediator between God and man is not only extra-biblical (found only outside of Scripture), but is also unbiblical (contrary to Scripture). Acts 4:12 declares that Jesus is the only Savior. 1 Timothy 2:5 proclaims that Jesus is the only mediator between God and man. Many other examples could be listed here. These points alone clearly identify the Catholic Church as unbiblical. Every Christian denomination has traditions and practices that are not explicitly based on the Bible. This is the reason why Scripture must be the standard for Christian belief and practice. The Word of God is always true and trustworthy. The same cannot be said about church traditions. Our guideline should be: "What does the Bible say?" (Romans 4:3; Galatians 4:30; Acts 17:10). 2 Timothy 3:16-17 proclaims, "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly prepared for every good work.

When I was a prot the Bible Alone doctrine didn't really make sense to me. And now I know why. These books of the New Testament were officially put together at the Council of Carthage, AD 397. And it's purpose was to be read at the Litergy. The Bible Alone doctrine was invented by former Augustinian monk Martin Luther, AD 1517.

@@timrosen1618 It's one of the doctrines invented by Martin Luther in 1517 at the start of the Protestant Revolution. Christianity had always been based on the teachings of Christ through the apostles and the Church Fathers. And most of that teaching was found in the bible, which The Church put together in 397. But after the Bible Alone doctrine in 1517 some people started basing their faith on their own personal interpretation of the bible alone.

I too have been asked dozens of times by non-Catholics where something is in the Bible, and when I give them the Chapter and Verse, they invariably always answer the same way, "That's not what it means." So my answer is this, "What do you think it means." Nine times out of ten, they cannot answer that question because after trying to put together a credible explanation, they suddenly realize their interpretation is full of holes. So instead, they change direction and say. "I don't know what it means, but it doesn't mean what you said it means." And that's where it usually ends.

@@Justas399how do you not recognize that you just described yourself? Where in the Bible does it say that we need a second Bible to interpret the first Bible? If that's the case wouldn't we need a third Bible to interpret the second Bible and so on, ad infinitem? Of course you're still thinking like an irrational Protestant who claims that books can interpret themselves when of course books are inanimate objects, and people must interpret them. It's obvious to anyone who uses basic critical thinking that because a book cannot interpret itself we do not use another book to interpret it; we look for person who has the authority of final interpretation. But I don't need to explain this to Protestants they know full well, which is precisely why they claim that they themselves are the highest authority to interpret the Bible about others. Since you lack a single source that authoritatively interprets every scripture verse it's unclear why you demand one except as hypocritical double standard.

@@Justas399 The first Christians did not have the Bible; they had the church to whom Jesus had promised the Holy Spirit to guide them into all truth. In the year 150 there was no definitive collection of scriptures that were known to be inspired but there were already errors believed by some groups that the church declared to be heresies. Because the church was led by the Spirit of truth even before the Bible was compiled into one book which the church declared to be inspired. If you accept the Church’s claim that these are inspired scriptures, why don’t you accept that same Church’s interpretation of them? If I believed the Book of Mormon ( but I do not) it would make sense to accept their idea of what it means. Since the Bible came from the Church why do you not accept the Church’s interpretation of it?

I love that quote from the catechism. The whole section says something like this. 85 "The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church alone. Its authority in this matter is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ."47 This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome. 86 "Yet this Magisterium is not superior to the Word of God, but is its servant. It teaches only what has been handed on to it. At the divine command and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it listens to this devotedly, guards it with dedication and expounds it faithfully. All that it proposes for belief as being divinely revealed is drawn from this single deposit of faith."48 87 Mindful of Christ's words to his apostles: "He who hears you, hears me",49 The faithful receive with docility the teachings and directives that their pastors give them in different forms.

I interprete what the Bible is say and I don't mix it with pseudo biblical traditions. Mark 7:7-8: "7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do." As an English teacher, I tell students that it is called Language Arts because what changes each time a piece of lit is read is the reader. It is an art because no one sees it or reads it like you do. If we were not given a teaching authority to interpret the Word, the faith would have splintered 1500 years earlier. Besides what scripture did first century Christianity follow..not the Bible..it wasn't compiled until 200 or so.. the Teaching and tradition of the church.

Indeed it does. And that is coming from a scientist. All my life I have been trained to deal with solid scientific facts. Also, it has no problem revealing everything in broad daylight where it can scrutinized by anyone. No other religion does that to the same extent.

The Catholic Church comprised & gave The Holy Bible to the world. Over 1500 years later, Protestants, without Gods authority, rewrote it, deleted verses, chapters, books and changed wording to The Holy Bible & to The Ten Commandments. Changing a word here and there can negate the meaning of Gods word. Revelation 22:18 For I call as witnesses all listeners of the words of the prophecy of this book. If anyone will have added to these, God will add upon him the afflictions written in this book. Revelation 22:19 And if anyone will have taken away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his portion from the Book of Life, and from the Holy City, and from these things which have been written in this book. Jeremiah 26:2 “Thus says the Lord: Stand in the atrium of the house of the Lord, and speak to all the cities of Judah, from which they come to adore in the house of the Lord, all the words that I have commanded you to speak to them. DO NOT CHOOSE TO SUBTRACT ANY WORD.”

I grew up in Lima, Perú, were 75% of the Population is Catholic (not well Catechized Catholics thought… but we are majority over there) SO, when another Cristians approached me over there, I just out of courtesy I always told them, thank you, received their paper or pamphlet, but when they wanted to read me something, I just smile and firmly say “thank you but no” and that was it. I never ashamed nobody for believing different than me, however since I moved to the States (my spouse is American, we lived in Middle East for a while due to his job) SO now, that we are here in America, I received some disrespectful comments of other people, when after they asked me (I even don’t bring the topic to the table, they are the ones that asks…) about me being Catholic… I NEVER feel ashamed or embarrassed, BUT it just catch my attention, how in the World some people consider themselves good Christians, as long you believe exactly the same as them, and if you don’t, they can do harsh comments on you… and that of Christianity does not have anything. So when I am approached about something “biblical” I am just chill out, smile and changed the topic. In matters of Faith, and in times like THIS (where the information is very available in comparison as before, and you can verify and get informed IF YOU REALLY WANT and are open to) nobody’s is going to changed their opinion if they are not open, and they just want to win an argument in front of people. Unfortunately most people don’t care about the truth, they just care for being right, and that is the key of the problem. Thank you Keith, as always for your knowledge and input 💪🏼🙏

Being a lifelong Protestant, I KNOW the Catholic Church is biblical. The Church existed about 350 years BEFORE the Bible. The Catholic Church actually wrote all the New Testament scriptures as it was the only church the Orthodox schism in 1054 and the heretical denominations from the Protestant Reformation in 1517. After I studied my Bible, studied the early church fathers, the history of the Bible, I came home to the Catholic Church about 5 years ago.

This! Definitely the points I've tried to raise, I've had a few question me on "where's that in the bible" after giving the scripture they say "that's not what it means" so I say "what gives you the authority to interpret it that way" they'll claim "the Holy spirit" so I have to point out the error that the conclusion they've arrived at directly contradicts the chapter and I then point them to Peter's epistle where he says that the unlearned twist scripture to thier own destruction. Most often I don't get a reply back after that, the times I do they always question well what authority do you have " I say "I don't but through Apostolic succession the Pope's, bishops etc through the magisterium of the church have authority to interpret scripture" they then say "where's that in the bible?" So I point them to Isiah 22 where the former leadership will be thrown out and a new leadership will be appointed with authority to teach doctrines, which in turn relates to Jesus handing the keys to Peter and whilst Jesus said to the apostles that when the Pharisees sit on the seat of Moses do what they tell you to do but don't do what they do for they are hypocrites, after the death and resurrection of Christ was the apostolic succession given at Pentecost when the holy spirit descended upon them as in acts we see Peter rebuking the Pharisees saying and I paraphrase "Christ is the cornerstone you rejected and it is by this we have authority" Jews knew exactly what was happening and they knew the significance of the cornerstone being the authority to teach doctrines (Dr Brant Pitre has done a phenomenal talk on the Jewish roots of the papacy 😅) Of course after all this protestants go "that's not what that means" 🤦 it's like if Jews understood it the way Catholics interpret it and it was actually how God set up the role of the High priest's to instruct people in the faith guess what you're theology just may be incorrect and Catholics have had it right all along.

Attending Mass, we always read paragraphs to paragraphs from the Old Testament and New Testament and we even stand up when it’s Jesus speaking while reading the Bible during the Gospel reading. And the priest even kisses the Bible, the Word of the Lord after reading the Bible. We raise the Bible when entering the Church and the Altar and before the reading for respect and showing respect for the Word. During the Readings or Liturgy of the Word we don’t only quote a phrase but we read long verses and we read from Old Testament and New Testament on Sundays to show how the Old Testament relates to the New Testament. Every day we have the Mass which means we listen to the Word of God every day. Then we have the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and can be done every day.

I'm so glad that you're tackling their strategies directly. Yet, it seems like it wpuld take for us to become saintly because there are instances that the truth will simply not be accepted, so the only way to convince someone is to show them something very beautiful. That beautiful something can be raking them to a Mass, which can be difficult because the Mass in your area may not be of their liking or they may just say "NO." The other option will depend on our own effort, which would be to become as saintly, eloquent, and calm as we can through much specific prayers to grow in the necessary virtues to let the Holy Spirit speak through us. Let's remember that when we're not in grace, our prayers aren't heard unless we ask to be humbled or something else that God may find helpful for sanctification. 😇😇😇😇😇 we're all called to be Saints 😃

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 📖 *Catholics often face the question "Where is that in the Bible?" regarding their beliefs and practices.* 01:48 🤔 *Arguing with anti-Catholics using Bible verses often leads to futile debates due to differing interpretations and lack of authority acceptance.* 03:37 🛡️ *Catholics reject the notion of sola scriptura and emphasize the importance of sacred tradition alongside scripture.* 07:18 📜 *Catholic belief asserts that both sacred scripture and tradition are essential for understanding truth and are closely interconnected.* 09:20 💬 *Quoting 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ("all scripture is inspired...") doesn't prove that everything Catholics believe must be explicitly in the Bible, as the Bible itself doesn't specify its own contents.* 10:56 🙏 *Catholics affirm the importance of tradition alongside scripture, as taught by Paul in 1 Thessalonians 2:15.* 13:11 ⚔️ *Interpretations of verses like 1 Corinthians 4:6 and Revelation 22:18-19 used to argue against extra-biblical authority require contextual understanding.* 14:35 🚫 *Rejecting the premise of sola scriptura is key when responding to challenges about Catholic beliefs not explicitly in the Bible.*
