I would like to remind everyone that these episodes were recorded pre-strike. Therefore some of the things we're talking about are a little out of sync with where we're at now. Also, as we've previously mentioned we will be transitioning into watch along format. For this serial we will still have the episode available, but as you'll be able to see it will be slightly blurred and audio lowered (Though that is the norm with audio). I have edited in a timer to help with adjusting to what that will be like as well. Thank you all for understanding and your support!

I have been wondering what Parker meant by Star Wars being 'WoKe' since 1977. Is it because (in film at least) we had a woman wielding a gun? Because I can't help thinking that there was already at least a Wonder Woman movie by or before '77? But maybe a basically bullet proof warrior race doesn't compare to a weak, mortal (more or less human) princes holding her own against an army and having better aim. EDIT: Didn't know about the Vietnam origins and backlash over Vader. I thought Lucas just wanted to make a space samurai romp lol.

I was a kid when New Hope came out, so I ain't young. There's stuff in all of the various SW series that I've loved, even if I didn't like a particular movie overall. Personally, I look to art and entertainment for joy, inspiration, cool shit, to have big feels, to have thoughts provoked, etc. I don't sit down to watch something to get mad about it. If that's what I wanted, I'd watch the news. Why people are fueled by hating this stuff, I don't know. Life is complex and mysterious. I enjoy what y'all do. I am loving Acolyte. BTW, I finished Rebels earlier today and it was incredible. All I have to say about this episode is that it ended too soon!

Something about this show just didn't look like Star Wars to me, and it took me a while to figure out what it was. First I thought it was the lighting, but whenever I paid attention to the lighting in any scene it looked fine. I finally realized it was a soft contrast in the color correction. There's no black in this show, just a dark gray. It's the same contrast used for MCU movies and shows, so subconsciously it made this feel more like an MCU show than a Star Wars show. Once I figured out what it was, I could ignore it, but it was bugging me for a while.

Yoda is at the Jedi Temple on Tenoo training younglings as far as we know. The Young Jedi Adventures which is set in the same era as The Acolyte establishes that he and Master Zai are the main trainers at the Tenoo Temple. The animated show follows four younglings and a few of their friends as they learn lessons from Yoda or Zai and go on various adventures. So I am not expecting Yoda to show up in The Acolyte unless the characters of The Acolyte either visit the Tenoo Temple or Yoda has to be involved in some special meeting with the other Jedi. I would not dislike it if he shows up (he’s my favorite Star Wars character), but I knew going in that it’s been established what he’s mostly doing and where in this era of the Star Wars timeline. Plus Headland said in interviews that one of her goals she set for herself when doing the show, as a fan of Star Wars herself, was to try to bring back into canon a few things that became Legends after Disney bought the franchise, but in ways that will make sense in the current canon. I’m not as familiar with everything that’s part of that (I know some of it, but I also am aware there’s lots I don’t) so it’s possible whatever she brings in will go over my head as being from Legends, but I think it’s neat that she’s willing to try to make it happen. Anyways, she seems big on respecting canon which is why I don’t think she’ll have Yoda in the show unless she can find a way to make it make sense with what’s been established in the media set in this era and while I have certainly changed my mind a lot on what I think is happening, I’m willing to concede that since this is a Star Wars story set in a mystery genre style narrative that the twists with the characters and situations is very much the norm in the genre and so even the shadowy redblade dude we see might not be all we think it is and so while I have theories and have seen theories by other fans, I’m keeping an open mind about what all we might learn as the story progresses. Great reaction!!!!

I think that’s me who you are referring to in the intro. I mentioned in the previous episode comments that my daughter’s favorite Star Wars movie is Rise of Skywalker which is one of my least favorite Star Wars. For various reasons, it just didn’t work for me but I’m happy that she has gotten so much enjoyment out of it. Note, I like the first two sequel movies, it’s just the Rise of Skywalker that didn’t work for me. The biggest thing that many can’t seem to get their head around is that art is subjective. Something that you think is “complete trash” will be someone else’s favorite. That when it comes to art there is nothing “objective bad” or “objectively good”. We all just have different things that we like and connect to. The world would be a very boring place if we all shared the same opinions. It’s fine to criticize what you disliked about a piece of content, but don’t expect everyone to share your opinion. It’s also too bad that people get too wrapped up in thinking that every piece of content from a franchise needs to work for them. It’s great if you do love every piece of content like Kat mentioned that they love all of Star Wars content. However, it’s okay to take just the pieces that you connect to and drop and ignore anything that doesn’t click for you. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. By the way, with Kat saying that they like all Star Wars content, I wonder if they have seen the 2 made for tv Ewok movies that came out in the mid-1980s? I LOVED those tv movies as a kid but I’ve re-watched them as an adult since they are now on Disney+ and they really don’t hold up well as an adult. However, those movies do have the first time George Lucas brought in a witch into the Star Wars universe. In the 90s, when the Nightsisters were introduced into the EU, the witch from the Ewok movie was retconned as a Nighsister. However, those two Ewok movies are now Legends despite the fact that Lucas worked on the stories for both movies.

I love that it takes place in an era outside of the other movies and shows, one of the thing that always bugged me was how much people kept running into characters we knew because it’s a GALAXY! but Yoda showing up would make sense in context, so I’d be fine with that. The acting has been great, some of the writing feels a little heavy handed but not any more so than other Star Wars. I don’t get the hate. I can see issues with some of the pacing but it’s the same sort of thing the plagues A LOT of other streaming shows, and that flashback episode felt like it was in a weird place, we definitely needed it, but as episode 3 seems odd. On the whole though I’m enjoying it.

I never really liked the immaculate conception bit in the Phantom Menace. I believe it is far more likely that Shmi was Force-roofied by a Sith (even more so since the eternal Palpatine thing). If this is leading into the Sith learning the secrets of how the witches used the Force to create a child, that adds bonus story points in my book. Overall, I think this series is roughly on par with Ashoka, a bit weak but still enjoyable.
@Helbore

RotS heavily implied that it was actually Darth Plagueis who was responsible for the immaculate conception of Anakin. I think the idea being that the Sith thought they could trick the Jedi into believing Anakin was the chosen one from their prophecy, but really he was a fake created to help destroy them. But at the same time, the Sith actually helped to fulfil the prophecy by being responsible for creating the actual chosen one.

I agree with you there Kat.., I was like... what ? - where did that come from.... I do wonder if it might still be a ploy on Mae's side, & she's decided to try & get close to Osha because she still blames here for her Mom's death... I do think perhaps there's a chance it's not that 'deep' & we just have to accept it at face value , to move the plot along, & in all honesty, I think we can feel that this show is marketed a little more towards the "tween-teen' market than to say the 25 - 35+ demographic.., - So I'm willing to 'let than one thru to the keeper' to use Aussie Cricket parlance

I reckon your theories on when we'll get Mae's side of what went down on that fateful night has some weight, since Kogonada, who directed episode 3, is directing the penultimate episode (I'd also like to share your opinions on the word "penultimate", as well as the word "facetious" - it's got all five vowels in order, that automatically makes it a great word). I will be honest, I have been struggling with The Acolyte for the last few weeks. That two-part premiere kicked things off really well, but I feel like the momentum has been seriously undercut as the show's gone on, first by doing an extended flashback last week, and now having this episode primarily be a slow and plodding chapter that doesn't really feel like it goes anywhere. I think you can see this in the discourse this week, where aside from the usual BS outrage merchants, the fandom was so starved for material to discuss that they threw a fit over Ki-Adi Mundi being in this episode, which apparently breaks canon because he's not supposed to be born for another couple of decades (God these fans are the most boring and miserable bunch, like a retcon like that even matters in the long run). That said, the appearance of the master (or to go by the fandom's nicknames for him, "Darth Teeth" or "Smilo Ren") at the end was well-executed, hopefully this is setting him up to be a more prominent presence in the series going forward, and it'll be the thing to give The Acolyte the kick up the backside it really needs as it goes into the second half.

The people kicking up over Ki-Adi-Mundi amuse me. Back when TPM came out, there was extended media that stated he was the only member of the Jedi Council who was still a knight and not a master. Then Lucas makes being only a knight on the Council a massive deal for Anakin in RotS, as if its never happened before and is a massive insult. But apparently that bit of EU canon-breaking is just fine to gloss over. But then Lucas happily shat all over the EU on a regular basis when making the prequels and people didn't care. They only kick up a fuss when they are wanting to kick up a fuss anyway.

I’ve realized that the one problem I have with some Star Wars is… I found Jedi profoundly unrelatable. Their code is … a bit incoherent, the whole ‘take young kids and teach them to fear emotion and attachments’ is wtf. So the shows that lean most on Jedi stuff makes it hard for me to get into it. This is one reason I love Andor. I’m enjoying Acolyte reasonably; I love the actors and action. I LOVE that the fights are rarely about lightsabers and really well-done.

You can find this exact conversation and quote almost anywhere online: In a 2018 conversation with James Cameron, "Star Wars" creator George Lucas noted that while he was initially inspired by rebellions like the American Revolution to create the political dynamics and themes of the film franchise, America had gradually morphed into its own form of "empire" by the time the Vietnam War broke out.

A lot of people are saying online that this episode breaks canon by showing the Jedi that the Sith are still out there, but I would like to offer up a rebuttal to that. First, having a red lightsaber is not a characteristic that is reserved for only the Sith. The red lightsaber comes from a process known as "bleeding" a lightsaber crystal, and can be done by anyone who has a lightsaber and is sufficiently strong in the dark side. In fact, we see in the video game Jedi Survivor this process being done by someone who is explicitly not a Sith, only a fallen Jedi. So this red lightsaber should not lead to conclusions by the Jedi about it being a Sith, rather a rogue Jedi at best (which they do speculate in this episode). Finally, I would argue that there is an element of intentionality to Mae's master assigning her the four Jedi to kill. If he is a Sith then he can obscure his motivations by using her as a scapegoat with the rest of the Jedi believing that she was acting out a personal vendetta instead of some secret grand plan. Now is it arrogant for the Jedi to discount the possibility of there being a Sith? Absolutely. But I do not think it is canon-breaking. Anyway, love the reaction!

Good episode, very deliberate cliffhanger. I'm glad you guys felt Mae's change of heart was sudden too. When I was watching it, I was like 'Oh...okay, that happened, I guess' - it was so quick with nothing leading up to it. I don't mind it, I just think they could have given us something leading up to it. I think the Master is a surviving Mother Koril from the coven. She already had no love for the Jedi before what happened, and if everyone else was killed.... Curious as to what Mae thinks she could tell the Jedi to get her freedom. Also, I understand they thought each other died, and Osha hasn't trained in a long time, but given they're both Force Sensitive, they're upbringing, and now knowing each other is alive, you'd think the twins would sense each other nearby, or at least on Mae's end. Yeah, if Jecki & Osha become a thing...what a ride we're in for. I kind of want it. 😆

Not only was Ashoka a George idea, so was Maul returning out of nowhere - I recently saw that reconfirmed by Filoni again. And hard agree on the EU Legends ... I loved it, but it was so wild in what it did 😆 What Sol said he saw in her eyes, I saw in the acting in e2 especially in that moment when Mae saw Osha - not saying it's the smoothest, everyone's mileage will vary, but in hindsight I think they were trying to lead into a switch Yes, it is Ki-Adi, and it made the fandom menace so mad ... apparently they threatened Wookieoedia editors after they corrected the entry. Then again, a few of them got mad at the line "is he…or they(?)…with us" because, you know, pronouns. You asked what I'm loving? Getting a different look at a different time in Star Wars. New Star Wars is exciting, of course art is subjective some is better than others ... But seeing new Star Wars is always exciting and I'm happy to see if this will pay off what it is setting up.

I respect your commitment to wipes, Kat. I've been thinking about the use of the yin/yang imagery and thinking that it's being used differently than in Attack of the Clones or Mortis. I feel like the yin/yang dots in this show are the twins surrounded by their opposing, "nature." It really feels like Mae and Osha are failures because Mae tends light and Osha tends dark. Episode 3 really felt like Mortis but without Anakin to stop the Son (Osha) from leaving. Apparently episode 7 is directed by the same person as 3 so I'm really hoping for a restatement flashback to clarify a lot of the curious behavior.

Ok. Awesome reaction. Great insight. One of the great endings of any episode ever. I agree we could’ve had more emotional beats in Mae’s decision. My thoughts are that the twins are like two half of the same force event and the closer they get to each other the more their thoughts and feelings affect each other. I think the canon reason for Anakin’s birth was as a reaction by the force to Plageus and Sidious trying to create life. You guys a right it’s not the same. The Witches created life out of love, that was not the sith intention. I kind of hope we don’t see Yoda. I think the fastest way for Star Wars to become dull is to include too much Star Wars. There are billions of people in that galaxy. It makes no sense to me that the same people would show up over and over again. There is enough connections without people showing up again. The great thing about this show is I sparks so many theories in my brain. Also the new trilogy is great. Ok Rise is rushed and could’ve done with another few drafts and to be delayed a year. But it’s still ok. And 7&8 are fantastic.

The symmetry of dropping someone new in your channel to talk about the acolyte, a show that is using an existing fan base, and pushing these writers and producers somewhere where they disregard the lore and everything that went before them is very fitting. Disney just trying to milk this and marvel for all they are worth and they just want to expand their fanbase for monetary reasons and use pandering tricks to achieve this, and the story suffers as a fan base. Real Sci-Fi, should make you think, question your moral and philosophical views make you look at things from a different angle, and not force things on you but makes you ask the question to yourself. I think the one thing this show is really good at is presenting characters and relationships that feel real and nuanced. The overarching mystery plot is fine. The scene-to-scene writing isn't always great (especially in the first two episodes). But I am completely bought in to this show in a way that honestly kind of shocks me. I also think the suddenness of Mae's change of heart stands out as jarring because the other character work is so amazing. I think it's an unfortunate side effect of Mae's true motivations being hidden from us until we see her version of the flashback.

History is written by the winners. The Jedi are NOT 'morally correct' heroes. Stalking and stealing Force sensitive toddlers? I like that the Acolyte points this up. Thank you Gallifrey Gals (Pals) for the video watching...

After watching the prequels, I was left with a bad taste because the Jedi weren't as good as Obi-Wan described in the original trilogy. Then I let that thought digest for a while, and eventually just came to see the big picture: Obi-Wan was well established even within the original trilogy as someone who hides uncomfortable truths. The prequel trilogy just expanded on that by showing what happened, including all of the mistakes the Jedi made while he was among them, and leaving it to the audience to decide how to feel about it. The Last Jedi took that a step further by showing that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and showing Luke taking it upon himself to learn what Obi-Wan never taught him, that the Jedi tradition is flawed, and showing him going from thinking the Jedi has to end to realizing that it has to evolve. This show, it seems, is just expanding further on what the prequels revealed, that the Jedi were just clergy cops doing what they thought was the right thing based on imperfect reasoning and a position of power that nobody should be in.

Thank you both for sharing your reactions to this show with us. We appreciate you for it. I, for one, am really enjoying this show. I think the show looks great (the costumes, sets, ships, creatures, etc.). It feels very Star Wars to me. I wish we got more time with the coven and some of the side characters, but I am enjoying the story of Osha and Mae (which is, of course, the focus of the show, as it should be) that they are telling so far, and I am looking forward to seeing where they take it from here.

Hi! It's me, the one who say the writting of the show wasn't so bad. I've come back after watching episode 4 to say: I was wrong. The only reason I'll keep watching now is to see Kat's and Parker's reaction afterwards. Thank you for your attention. Edit: OMG the level of the past comments made me edit this. I didn't like the writting of this episode because I felt it shallow, the dialogs weird and, even with some scenes trying to convey a sense of urgency, I didn't feel this emergy at all. Now THAT being said: I do love that Jakie and Osha seem to have a thing but I profoundly hope it's more than queerbait (please, let not be queerbait). I also would love to see more elements of this episode in the next (like the umbermoth not being only to scare Kat) and not thrown away; I'm torned between wanting that Manny's character isn't a red herring and not dragging a new one out of the blue to be the villain; finally, that espisode felt short as heck, not sure if it was the less-than-30 minute length or I was expecting not to end in a cliffhanger. Sorry for the long comment. Please, carry on. I promise to be calmer next video.

i love a lot of sci-fi and fantasy franchises....Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Farscape, Babylon 5, Stargate, The Expanse, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Marvel, DC, Aliens, Predator, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and many more. When i love a franchise I tend to love it all'; the good, the bad and the ugly. Doctor Who being my absolute favorite. Even Doctor Who has some episodes that I hate like "Aliens of London" and "World War 3", but I still loved those episodes. Sometimes stories fall flat and disappoint. Star Wars had some failures. I won't deny they could have done things differently to improve the Book of Boba Fett and Obi-wan, but being Star Wars, I still loved it. If you love a movie or tv franchise, then you should just sit back and enjoy the ride. REAL LIFE is a series of failures, successes, disappoints and joy. Stop watching shows and movies to purposely find flaw in them. You will always be disappointed and depressed if you keep looking for the negatives to complain about. I am 50 years old, I have been suffering with depression and anxiety for 37 years nw (started when I was 13). Watching Sci-fi and Fantasy is the best joy I have. Just enjoy the ride. Writing in the movies and tv shows won't always be a wow. Writers are trying their best. If it were easy, everyone would be writting scripts and novels, but in reality not everyone does. Also, the writers are NOT trying to write the stories just for you alone. They are trying their best to entertain the masses. If you don't like something, that is fair, but don't complain about something to just pick it apart and destroy it. Enjoy the ride.

Interesting to hear from the a Star Wars whistle blower who has exposed the toxic work environment at Disney. How so many were fired, and how any dissent caused them to be targeted and shouted at. When ideas cannot be challenged you get weak and bad story lines as we clearly see.

I just watched all four episodes and I really don't understand the weird hate this show gets. It's fine. It's a different story with new stuff. I could do with a bit more exposition but it's pretty clear this is about the beginnings of the rot in the Jedi Order. I mean, when they interrupt a ceremony and say "The Jedi have a right to test your children." that's not the good guys in any story. IMO the coven had every right to end them immediately and chose to be peaceful. They let these cultists draw their blood and manipulate Osha. (Am I the only one that finds it funny that Osha's job was breaking workplace safety regulations?) Then it's we're leaving and your kid is coming with us because this 8 year old can decide for herself to leave the planet with a bunch of strangers to be indoctrinated into a religion that designates yours as being evil. I think the secret is that Mother horns refused to allow it, Trinity demanded to take her, and the Jedi massacred them. Also, I'm gonna throw this out there but I wouldn't put it past them to have Darth Smiles be a young Palpatine.
