Kelsey, I just installed my Baja Rack on my 2016 4 Runner on Saturday and like you said in your video it looks a little dovetailed when I tried to align it. I'm going to have to get on top and measure it diagonally from each corner. I emailed the company and asked them if they use a jig to weld the rack together.I'm probably going to replace the nylon lock nuts with split washers and use a little lock tite on the stainless bolts. I just ordered the ladder (should have ordered it when I bought the rack) and they say up to 7 weeks delivery time. The rack however IS very sturdy and I'm pleased with it. Rob Union Beach, NJ

Nice! After living with it for more than a year, I still love it! There are some rust stains starting on some of the hardware but with the amount of salt used here in NY I am quite pleased.

GREAT video !!...looking for a full length rack for my 2016...I just bought an Ocean Kayak yesterday and I think this rack will spread out more of the load...I also have a 10 foot paddle board and I'm wondering if I can get padding that will work on the front ??...can you tell me the widths of each 3 sections of the rear rack ??....thanks !!!

Hi! Nice video. I've been watching you for some time now. I bought a 2018 4runner TRD OFFROAD PREMIUM this past July. I began my build within hours of driving it off the lot. I am currently researching racks. I'm kinda loving the Prinus Full Length (no drill). Questions: 1. Did you look into the Prinsu? 2. What made you decide on Frontrunner instead? 3. Do you have full functionality of moon roof w/ roof rack panel installed?

I have the same roof rack on my red 4 runner! It also appears dove tailed at the rear of the vehicle. I think it's the way the roof line lays.

Do you think it'd be hard to swap this rack in and out with the factory rack? Would it be something you'd do as much as once a year, or do you think that'd wear and tear those tabs/threads/bolts too much? I'd like to get back to smooth factory rails after using the rack, so it can safely go through an automatic car wash.

Hey man, I saw you got this in 2016 or so. I have a 2019 trd pro, and I'm looking at this same rack. How is it holding up? Wind noise? Rusting etc any info greatly appreciated. I'm trying to decide between mesh or no mesh... Or even go for the ARB roof rack.

Vee, I usually go with a power washer. We have a DIY car wash station less than a 1/4 mile from where we live so I can just run over there, throw some quarters in and spray. Hope this helps!

Thank you! I do not know of a way to prevent it from being stolen but it would take some serious effort to take it! You could permanently affix it to the roof but that would destroy the roof. Wish I could be more help!

Thank you! I do, it is the 2.5 inch daystar leveling kit. I did not want to go more that that so that it will still fit in the garage with the roof rack.

Couple questions: 1: How do you like the sunroof cut out piece? Do you use it often? 2: How is the airflow when you have your sunroof open? I am between the full length like this one or the 3/4 length that stops right before the sunroof. Thanks

1) I am happy with the cut out piece and do use it. I did not like the hardware it came with so I went with something more like thumb wheels for easy installation. I would say though that I am comfortable walking around on the rack but would not step on the cut out because the tabs that secure it I am not sure would support me. Good for gear though. 2) I am not 100% sure what you are asking here but it is louder with the rack. Not enough for me to care. When the cut out is not in it gets good airflow but is also largely dependent on what other windows are open. Hope this helps!

I have not found any downsides to having the roof rack. You can here more wind noise with it when the sunroof is open but it is not terrible. Thank you for the comment!

The Daily Deep Thank you! It does make some noticeable noise when the sunroof shade is slid oped but with the radio on or the sunroof shade closed, it is hardly noticable.

Hey there - Depends on the brand. Baja makes racks to order and usually takes between 1 and 2 months. Gobi Racks also build to order and currently their wait time is 3-4 months. I have a Gobi on order now, halfway there!

Khoa -> Thank you! I have not noticed much, maybe 2 tenths of a mile. I do not pay too much attention to the mileage just because that is not why I bought it! If I wanted mileage I would have gotten the Hybrid Rav4! All said it is not enough of a change for me to worry about, I love having it!

when driving is their a whistle because of the gap between your roof and the rack? i placed a smaller cheaper rack on my 4runner and all i heard was like a wind tunnel above me on the highway so i removed the rack and sold it but now im interested in buying a baja rack or gobi roof rack.

I have definitely noticed more wind noise when the sun roof shade is open. It is certainly not overwhelming though. With the radio on I hardly notice. Once the sun roof shade is closed you can barely tell. We love the rack so far and would definitely recommend it.

Did you use red loctite like Toyota when putting the bolts in on the roof? Debating if I should use blue loctite. Red seems too much.

Samuel Lim Either would work fine but also make sure you use plenty of rtv around the holes to keep the water out!

If your 4Runner has no factory rail / rack, are there accommodations to bolt on the aftermarket low profile part you installed?

Yes, those accommodations will still be there! The holes will be under a rubber strip and you may need to cut it to the correct length once the brackets are installed. The easiest way to check is just to pull up the black rubber strip on the roof to look for the hole locations before you order your rack. Hope this helps!

It is 6'5" with the 2.5 inch leveling kit and the high basket roof rack. Just be careful if the entrance to your carport is not level if you have to go over a bump to get in it may hit. Hope this helps!

There is a noticeable increase in noise but not overwhelming. I do not even notice it anymore.

I usually remote start it in the morning with the heat on blast and the sunroof shade open which seems to help. Luckily for me, I live off a country road and the traffic is sparse so I can drive off and let the wind take it! If I am out and about and it snows then I just let it fly.

I use a power washer with a foam canon to do the washing and up there I only use a spray wax by hand (with a pad on a stick) because I can not reach in well enough to do a good job buffing a traditional wax.

With the sunroof cover open it is noticeable above your head. Once you close the sunroof shade it is negligible to me. I am coming from a '97 Ram 2500 Diesel with straight pipe exhaust so most things are quiet to me! You can easily hold a conversation or listen to the radio at highway speeds with the sunroof shade closed. Hope this helps. I may try to do a video on this soon because it is difficult to explain the amount of noise so keep your eye out for that!

Yup! I did a 2.5 inch leveling kit in it as well as the rack and it still fits! That was a requirement for us with the decision on how much to lift it!

So far so good! There is some minor rust stains on the washers at the bottom of the ladder but only visible when you open the tailgate. This looks like just surface rust stains. Nothing will hold up forever here in Upstate NY! We use more salt than anywhere in the world! (This might not be true I made it up, but we do used way too much) It eventually eats away at everything!

I just realized the second part of your question! Sorry about that! They do not come as a set from Baja Rack and you need to call in order to get the ladder, it is not available to order from there website. I think I paid about $1600 for the Rack, ladder, and Mesh sunroof insert. Hope this helps

I honestly did not run it long enough without it to have an accurate comparison. I drive "strongly" might be the best way to say it, and I still get about 16.8.

I'm wanting to install this for my 19' Pro, but after removing the OEM rack i've noticed there are none of those white tubes in the bolt holes. Does yours also have that back plate under there to attach the bolts?

I am not sure that I follow what you are referring to with the back plate. They may have made some updates to the 2019 that I am not aware of.

@@KelseyCars615 Ok so for each of the attach points on the roof there are two bolt holes. Each bolt hole has a plastic/nylon tube there as a guide for the bolt. The bolts attach under all that to an oval shaped backing plate under the vehicle skin with two holes - one for each bolt. The problem is that it's only tack welded in one place - iof you use too much force it'll snap off and drop into the headliner. I was wondering if your model, being a earlier 5th gen, also had that plate, or has something else like a direct thread. Thanks!

That is a good question! I do not know because I have not taken down the head liner. I would imagine it to be the same because a manufacturing change like that would take effort and if thee have not been complaints or warranty problems, they likely would not invest in changing it. It is probably just tacked to hold it while the bolts are threaded in because once they are in the forces will be on the opposite bolt not necessarily the bracket mount. Sry that isn't more helpful! @@KelseyCars615 Oh no thank you very much! I contacted Gobi and they said that the nylon tubes aren't essential for the Stealth install, and they're tracking the change on the 19's. They recommend removing one bolt at a time so as to not lose the plate, and installing the hardware on one side then swinging it all over before inserting the other bolt. Thanks!

Not at all, the entire moon roof in captured in the shell of the roof so it can perform all of it's operations without obstruction.

I barely notice, I think it helps that it is way over on the drivers side and that it is slightly curved but at this point I do not even notice when I look in the mirror.

I am not aware of any design changes that would affect the way this rack is mounted but just check with the Baja Rack folks to be sure.

Brando, if you are talking about the location of the front supports and where the can be installed on the vehicle. There is only one place that then can be installed based on the location of the rack. There are not multiple holes for you to choose where you want them. If this does not answer your question please let me know with a little more detail on which bolts you are referring to. Thank you!

Sorry if this doesn't make sense. I understand there are 2 sets of pre-made holes along either sides of the weather stripping. But what if I wanted to bolt something down in the weather stripping near the front, say adjacent to the sunroof. Would that be possible? I'm putting a 16ft ladder on top and I want the two ends of the racks as far a part as possible to handle the length and weight properly. So while the back end could go where these original holes are, the front would have to go up about a foot further, beside the sunroof.

You can certainly do that but it will require you to drill holes through the roof. For this, make sure that you use good grommets and lots of RTV to make sure you seal everything up tight!

So I wont run the risk of running into the curtain side airbags? That was my only concern, even though the factory rack runs along the same weather strip. I was worried the curtain airbags would be right under that sheet metal strip.

That is a good question. I am not sure but you could easily pull the interior trim first to move the head liner a bit and see exactly where it is located before drilling.

With the Sun roof shade open and the radio off it is noticeable. Once you have the radio on or the shade closed it is minimal if any.

That is a tough question to answer. I suppose it would depend on your use. If you are looking for an everyday vehicle that is seriously capable off road, i would say the 4Runner trail, trail premium, or TRD pro because it has a rear diff lock and some other off road features. If you are looking for a luxury vehicle that can definitely get you to the campsite will all the comforts, the Land Cruiser is you choice but it comes at a premium! I hope this helps.

I regret the roof rack I just purchased..... it doesn't have very clear instructions and doesn't really have any strong supports for the original bolts... kinda fucked.

I am not 100% sure you can use this setup because I went with the "basket" style. For most RTTs you need the flat rack. I imagine if you had a flat rack with mesh it should work but I can't say for sure. We don't run one so I don't know.

I find it is easy, the main reason we went that direction is that it is easier to move around up there when packing and uppacking without damaging the roof.

I got them from here: 2015 - 2016 SOUTHEAST TOYOTA 4RUNNER BLACK OVERLAY BUNDLE KIT 00016-89016 www.amazon.com/dp/B01F42IS20/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Yx.5xbAX819FP However right now they seem to be out. You could try googling the oart number. The other option which i did on my Camaro is to platidip the emblems. For that I used black and the glossifier. I plan on making a video soon about using plastidip on the rear silver valance on the rear bumper. Look out for this and I will explain exactly how to do this.

For us that was already black. The only place that i put the plastidip on the 4Runner so far is the front lip where I removed the license plate bracket and plugged the holes. Then I used plastidip on it to cover it up. Please check out my other video where I introduce our 4Runner for information on this and other upgrades we have done!

The emblems that I dipped on my Camaro were over chrome and it has been holding up really well. The nice thing about your situation is that you could mask off a much bigger area to spray and not worry about peeling around the letters. Just make sure you use a paint prep cleaner that will remove all grease, wax, and oil so there is a good adhesion. Also, if it ever wears you can just peel it off and spray again. Hope this helps
