I didn't use the roller guides the first few passes. They really help. And, yes. Trigger the motor and stop each time when the tip hits mid-belt. Still perfecting this, bit my dull, neglected knives are way sharp and I restored my dinked chinese cleaver. Magic!

I have this same unit and I use it with everything from $500 Japanese kitchen knives to $8 cheap flips. Works great on everything and I can’t think of a con. Your issue in the video is not using the blade rest consistently, but it sounds like you figured that out. Good vid!

I must say, I always use the blade support on all my knives, and have found that helps keep the blades from dropping down too far on the blade towards the point, also run medium speeds on the extra coarse through x22, then a slower speed on the x4 and extra fine, i ran through my whole kitchen block and got them razor sharp in the time it would take me to do a decent job on the chef's knife on stones

No one ever mentions that the belt leads the edge on one side and trails the edge on the other. With the Blade Grinding Attachment, the belt just trails. It would be awkward, but I guess you could use one side for both sides of the blade.

Alternate strokes after you form the first burr. If you don’t have a burr don’t move on. Most people no matter the method sit for hours honing just behind the apex of the edge and the result is the same as what you started with.

The instructions say to stop the belt while tip of knife is on belt. That is so the tip doesn't get rounded over.
@OutdoorGearDad
@OutdoorGearDad 5 жыл бұрын
Doug Prentice yeah I noticed that later, but honestly now that I have had it for awhile I never do that I just pull the blade off before it hits the end of the belt. When your doing several knives in one go it’s a pain in the butt and takes a lot longer to start and stop the belt every time. None of my knives have yet to get a rounded point.

I liked 👍 his video! He made numerous mistakes... Position your blade before powering on the machine, otherwise you may grind divetts into your blade!... Also, stop your blade with the tip of your blade roughly in the middle of the belt and power off... This will prevent you from from destroying the tip of your blade

Had the same problem last night with my own knife that had a 30° edge felt sharp but didn't really cut. Re-did the edge at 20° on a almost new "x65" grit belt, on a higher speed than recommend. Gave a great new edge and reprofile. Worked for me 1st try but I'd practice on a throw away knife, and get comfortable with the higher speed. 25° repofile would have been fine too.

Mate u dont just count the passes and hope for the best, that's ridiculous. You need to feel and establish the burr first, otherwise you will never know if you are even hitting the apex and it's not going to be sharp. The burr is the most important part of sharpening. This machine takes practice, once you learn about how to use it, it can produce edges of ridiculous sharpness.

Ron Hall glad you liked it. I would say practice on some crappy knives. Takes a little while to learn the machine itself, but if you follow the instructions and take it slow you get the hang of it. I sharpen or clean up knives weekly on this thing and absolutely love it. Also the bands are a little expensive to replace but you can buy generic ones on amazon that work great but aren’t the worksharp brand....WAY cheaper.

@@stevep2325 actually Mike not too bad, I'm sure if we took them and put them under the microscope it may show a different story but. The main gripe would be that the belt goes one way and it's not designed for you to flip the blade upside down on one side so another words, one side of the blade the belt goes downward and on the other side it goes up unless you reconfigure how you're holding it.

Good video. I just ordered this machine and expected to get it delivered by next week. I'm kind of anal about having sharp knives in the kitchen. Nothing me crazier than a knife that can't break the skin of a tomato or bell pepper. I liked that you showed how well the blade cut after sharpening it, but I think it could have been better if you had shown how it cut before sharpening. Otherwise good job.

How many of you sharpen your knives by pushing the blade into the sandpaper instead of drawing the blade away from the sandpaper. This machine needs a reverse so you can do the job right. When you draw from the left side the sand paper s going down way from your blade, but on the other side the sandpaper is running up into your blade, and that is not good! A reverse button would let you get the belt running away from the blade on both sides.

Terrible idea unless we're planning to put convex bevels on our knives. Unless the knife already had a convex bevel (e.g. German kitchen knives..some). No shortcuts. Best sharpening is still done using whetstones. Maybe followed by suing a hand-held manual sharpener 2-stage. or 3-stage (Minosharp).

You should do your home work before you do a Review...sorry but it's pretty bad

marcello alvisi thanks for your input and feedback. Always appreciated. All of my reviews are raw and more of a first impression from someone who doesn’t pretend to know what they are talking about. Just want people to know my honest thoughts.

homework in what way? If you offer a critique at least make it constructive instead of just posting one line.

@@abdullahal-shimri3091 Do your homework meaning, Use it on a few knives first to familiarize yourself with its operation before you do a video. Is that hard to understand? I own and use the same model. When I watched the video. It was not good....that's all . No big!

Your 1st knife failure was not your fault or because it was your 1st time. It was because you tried to sharpen the worst knife on the market. Buck knives will not hold an edge, they are terrible knives, & I wouldn't have one if you gave it to me free. For ECD Gerber knives use a hard metal & make great ECD knives easy to maintain.
