How about giving the luxury taxes to lesser teams provided they spend it within a certain amount of years, after which if they don't spend the money will be returned to the team that paid for it?

I read the NY Post interview with Hal and I don't see where you're inferring this from what he said. What part of the interview gave you this impression that that was his point? It sounded to me like he was more upset about having to spend 2.1x the money to get a guy like Snell this off-season. I didn't see anywhere that he mentioned how he's upset with stingy owners that don't spend. I'm with Ken, OPEN THE BOOKS! It's never going to happen, but I'm also never going to take billionaires at their word, especially when it comes to "financial hardship".

@@Scotter4536 Well, Hal’s comments came at the MLB owners meeting and not in a NY Post interview, so that’s your first clue that you have to read between the lines. When you ask yourself why he would say that in that particular setting, it being about the luxury tax starts to make a lot of sense.

@@StacheBigote Yeah, the story broke cause he was talking to Dan Martin of the NY Post at the Owners Meeting. Unless you're referencing some other news story. But I'm pretty sure they're discussing the comments from that NY Post article, just like everyone else has. And I understand why they're discussing the luxury tax. My point was that in his comments he never mentions anything about how other teams aren't spending the luxury tax money they receive. Can you point me to the Hal's comments that you're referring to or that you think Foul Territory is referring to?

@@Scotter4536 Yeah, I just meant that there’s a difference between him sitting down for an interview with the NY Post and talking to reporters at the owners meeting. The latter opens all sorts of doors to subtext. Within that subtext is where they’re drawing these conclusions from. It’s hard to fully gauge Hal’s intentions without knowing the specifics of conversations had at the owners meeting. But he could’ve very easily been saying that in the press so that other owners would hear it.

Why does no one seem to mention the annual appreciation value of the team? According to Forbes, the Yankees are worth $7.55B. That is a 6% or a $450M increase over the previous year. More than enough to pay for Soto who is a brand juggernaut who will further drive valuation. Yes, the $450M is not income but what billionaire wants to pay income taxes versus deferring gains?

NASCAR is a racing sport. Speed is the main component of the sport! The speed of a batted ball is not the premise of MLB. It's about getting on base and getting a base hit. Who cares how hard you hit the damn ball just get on base. Hit a home run. Whatever. A home run is a home run whether you hit it 40 miles an hour or a 1000 miles an hour. That's Wilbon point. There are other metrics and statistics that are way more important in baseball than exit velo.
@kingrazo10
@kingrazo10 22 күн бұрын
I agree and a lot of it has to do with scouting. Baseball scouts today have gotten more lazy, they only focus on the metrics (throwing velocity, exit velo, 60 yard) and guys will get drafted/signed if they have exceptional metrics even if they are not great ball players. This is why we don’t see more contact hitters or location specialists in mlb anymore. Those type of guys don’t even get signed anymore. If you can throw a ball 95 even with terrible accuracy youll get an opportunity, and if you can hit a ball 100+mph but have awful contact rates and strikeout half the time you’ll still get an opportunity Btw : I noticed this at a recent showcase where I sat next to a few scouts and all they cared about was the pitchers velocity & spin rate. Seemed like they didn’t care on the results of the outing even if they gave up multiple runs as long as the pitcher was consistently 90+ mph with good spin they were interested. Then a guy with a mid - high 80s fastball could shut down the lineup and get no interest. Its ridiculous

I dont see how this is a complicated issue. If you have a threshold at the high end for a maximum payroll, do the same thing for a minimum payroll. Anyone not spending the minimum amount, forfits their share of the luxury tax that they would have otherwise been entitled to. There are too many teams that dont even attempt to compete. Make those teams feel the pain.

In addition to Hal Steinbrenner's disdain for subsidizing rival teams, could he also be subtly chastening owners in his own weight-class? Is he sending a message that agents (particularly Boras) have been exploiting their recklessness and lack of discipline and that this "arms-race" spiral needs to be brought under control? Top salaried players dominate individual team payrolls, disproportionate to their actual competitive value. Star players cannot be retained by small and mid market teams and "middle-class" players are being squeezed as GMs seek to replace them with minimum salary and bargain bin projects. And that doesn't even speak to how resources are allotted to the Minor Leagues, scouts, other parts of an organization, or how it affects fans (it's already very expensive ("unsustainable") to take a family to a game now). Other than for top-end talent (and owners), this entire structure seems broken; a bubble that is destined to burst.

The entire equal sharing of national TV money when it's only the large markets that the national networks care about, yet the money is shared equally, and having smaller markets end up as revenue-sharing recipients while the larger markets are payees (getting less back) is a broken model, especially as the smaller markets are also gifted prospects, which are incredibly valuable. I don't blame Steinbrenner for being annoyed he has to support teams who aren't doing anything to expand the game in their markets and, worse, in the case of Oakland, completely abandoning and destroying the market. It's time for MLB to create a relegation league and send the A's, Rays, Marlins, Guardians, Royals, etc. all off to that league. Make them work hard to get back to MLB's Premiere League.

Hal has also said multiple times that he thinks you can build a world championship team consistently with a 250 million payroll. 3. He is preparing Yankee fans for the loss of Gleyber, Rizzo, Verdugo, Holmes and quite possibly a trade of Cortes who is hitting a big arb # this offseason. 4. They will resign Soto and the Yankees may be better next year with a payroll 30 million less.

Only way to have the small market teams actually spend the money they receive through the tax is to have a SALARY CAP. If there is a SALARY CAP, then there has to be a SALARY FLOOR, by which the small market teams will have to pay at least the floor, per year. That is good for the players and the owners. Opens up the books on MLB franchises to see what they really pocket every year, and forces small market teams to buy free agents and actually play to win. As usual, any cap on salaries is a no-go for the players and that is why they are among the dumber players unions in sports. If you want franchises to open the books, advocate for a freaking salary cap.

No, but it should be spent on SOMETHING in baseball. The A's have probably received enough money over the last 10 years in revenue sharing to build their own baseball stadium. Instead, they're going to play at a AAA stadium for three years as they 'calmly' figure out what they're doing in Vegas. The Rays have also been a recipient the last 10 years. They're not really bidding against the Yankees for players, but at least Rays/ Yankees games at the Stadium are true contests...

If you force owners to spend that money on salaries, for example, then what’s to stop them from running out the same payroll and now just pocketing the money raised internally now that half your payroll is being paid by luxury tax? Just like in real life, more legislation is not usually the best answer because people will always find the work around when it comes to their best interest. Sure you can pay more taxes if you’d like, but wouldn’t you also claim as many deductions and write-offs that you can?

@bobbleheadbob Nothing would stop the owners from pocketing their own money except for a salary floor, true. But we'd still be at the same problem. And let's not forget--not only is there the luxury tax, but there is also general revenue sharing. @@HHSGDFootballJPD interesting, I wasn’t aware of the general revenue sharing. I don’t have any issues with revenue sharing, especially since you need a league for teams to play against and I’m sure the big market teams don’t mind eating the small markets for wins. I can understand why the owners of large market teams might care if such a large % is being shared with owners “pocketing” the money. However most fans just want fair competition and equal opportunity, they don’t care about how the billionaires split their money. I definitely see this being an issue of contention during the next CBA between owners… Hopefully the fans don’t suffer because the owners are fighting over who keeps the $

If Yankees have a payroll problem then Hal is ot rich enough to own the team. New York does not lose money, so if he's making money why is this a problem? If you don't want to resign Soto, then sell the team.

Negotiating ploy w/Soto aside, the NYY does not mint money. The TV, ticket & ad revenue is not infinite. There is a certain point where the payroll gets too high, even for the Yanks. You understand that, right?

Dodgers will take Soto then.

Just the Dodgers? If the Mets are bidding, Soto’s price tag will only go up. $500 million? $700 million. At that range, even those teams start losing $$$$. No owner, not even Steve Cohen or Guggenheim, want MLB to be a losing enterprise for all the owners
