How To Belt - Belting Techniques - Voice Tutorial - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Some have referred to me as: "The King Of Belt."
Even if only a small percentage of those that say that are true, it may buy me the right to share with you my views on belting.
I have been "belting" safely for over 30 years (and show no signs of slowing) 
I emphasize this because those that belt incorrectly, eventually lose their voices altogether.
As I demonstrate in this video, there is a right way and a wrong way to belt.
Belt the wrong way and you will have a very short-lived singing career.
I also see a glut of people on the internet (i.e. KZfaq etc.) telling people their philosophies on belting.
Funny thing is, they can neither belt themselves, nor do they display students belting.
Be very leery and careful of that.
Don't go to a guitar teacher who can't show you how to play guitar.
Go to a guitar teacher who is a master at his craft, and he can show you something.
The same applies to singing lessons.
Please enjoy this video tutorial. I hope you find it useful.

Too late. They already know.
@InternalizedSun
@InternalizedSun 5 жыл бұрын
Every time I hear a kid singing out loud while they walk or ride by our house I always get that nice warming feeling of how I used to just sing, sing, sing whenever I was alone (or with a band of course) in my teens and it makes me so happy to see that kids these days do exactly the same and just don’t mind what others think of them until they see you and they stop singing from being a little shy after all. So whenever they stop because of seeing me I always encourage them to keep singing because “it sounds nice” or “I love what you’re doing” or “Let it out and be free - it’s the best way to become the best” or stuff like that.. Today when I hear them singing and they then see me they do give a tiny smile away and perhaps a little laugh, but they do try to keep singing all the way down the road. So know that you might think that others find you being a lunatic, but we we/they just might actually admire you and enjoy that you are getting better and better with time - unfortunately sometimes in silence! - Rock on! BTW: My neighbors always turn down their radios whenever I practice or record (singing or an instrument)... they say - it’s way better and more interesting than what is on the radio - so I’m not the only one giving encouragement to others! 👍

I was always so shy about singing. Always choked during semi-professional recording sessions. Finally becoming okay with singing without a guitar in my hands or a band behind me at the age of 27. I wish I'd dealt with my anxiety earlier, there are a lot of missed opportunities there. I'll try to remember to encourage anyone I hear singing in public from now on.

I REALLY like how he pointed out the case with ladies. I honestly could NOT agree more (that is, based on my experience). I've REALLY been struggling with this. I have a naturally raspy voice anyway, but when I go into the high notes, like, A4 onwards, this sort of fear takes over of whether ill sound pitchy, and so I end up losing that rasp and sort of husk, and it just sounds very head voicey and breathy. Thank you SO MUCH KEN, for pointing out something that I have not seen almost ANY other vocal coach out there point out. I'm feeling a lot more confident; I guess I'll prioritize the support and the strength of the higher register first, and then work on pitch. Again, Ken , i honestly can't thank you enough for clearing up a question I've been having for YEARS now!

Just stumbled upon your channel in the last couple days. Blown away. My voice is naturally pitched really similar to you. I too have expanded my depth, finesse, and range over my life singing. I dig that you teach correct ways to do things Bel Cantos consider no no. I like head voice cause there's nothing false about it, a term I never heard as a young singer. I spent a long time crushed in my baritone box even after figuring out for myself how to sing like Geddy Lee when I was 16. Too much tension, so I lost that in my 20's and 30's, been getting it back with grace and power learning how to build it on my big belly breath. Thanks again for sharing your channel. I been doing all these things, learning bird song too. Then comes you, illuminating greater awareness of what I naturally sense. Had I a teacher like you when I was 16, maybe it wouldn't have taken so long to get back into my full range.

Thank you SO much for the great belting tips and exercises! I have a vocal performance degree as a classically trained soprano, but for the life of me I've always had such a hard time finding my "belting" voice- I switch so quickly to my head voice as soon as it gets too high for my chest voice. Turns out I've sacrificed it at the altar of the high note..! I'm working on becoming more stylistically flexible as I want to sing more pop/musical theater styles. Thanks again- you really know your stuff!!

I thought having a really deep baritone voice was a curse, but this stuff here helps me hit notes in a higher register without killing my voice. After years of singing and playing, I'm basically relearning how to sing all over again. My problem is my guitar's body against my diaphragm seems to cut my voice short. I feel like i'm at a crossroads of guitar or vocals only, but i can't choose. If i lower the guitar strap, i can't play as well, but if i raise it to where i can play, i can't sing properly from the weight. It's a dilemma I've been battling for years. I wish i could find a happy medium so i can sing and play. This is probably a lot of lead singers don't plat instruments while singing and performing.

I love female belters with rich and round vibratos, especially when they stay true to a song's melody and don't use runs and riffs. I wish that kind of singing didn't go out of fashion, but it seems like it has. I love your work. Thank you, Ken.

I'm not saying I go into everything with little to no effort... but it seems I'm a natural to some sports and some I'm not.. but when it comes to singing it seems I have a natural ability to sing.. now I have smoked and haven't taken care of my vocal chords at all but during karaoke nights from when sober to getting a buzz at this bar the bartender didn't drink at all but he says I have a natural ability to sing and that I should focus on it.. but I'm a lifetime cook.. and will always cook.. but continuously get told I should try out for some singing shows.. I've thought about posting videos of me at either karaoke or just at home and singing acapella

I’ve been in a choir since age 7. I’ve learned how to sing soft and in unison with the others. Now (at age 18) I have a Jazz/Pop/Rock vocal teacher and I’m discovering so many different layers of my voice! It’s great and I’ve made so much progress in the last year! But I have a problem with taking my chest/mixed voice higher, I’m just not used to it. I hope it’s not too late to learn how to do that. At some point it feels like I’m Kermit and choking. So that’s why I’m here. I’ll definitely try these tips (not that my teacher isn’t enough, she’s great! but I feel like it’s research or homework that I’m doing), the shouting one is a really good start! I’ve never thought of it like that. So thank you I guess for all the videos on this topic, I’ll check out some more! I‘m also apologizing for any grammar mistakes, I’m not english.

It's not too late to learn at all. The sooner you do get started, the better, but you will eventually go a long way towards your goals if you just get started and resolve to keep going forward.

Call register sacrificed at the alter of the high note... WOW YES! 10 years of vocal training it was pushing the highs higher and tone and breath control but no learning how to sing THROUGH low to high. My voice has been parked in the garage for 20 years because I could sing up high and way down low but nothing in between so I thought I was just not "talented" or "built" to sing the songs I wanted outside of choral/classical music. I'm trying to tune the car back up I have some hope I can actually learn to do this.

Hey Ken ! First of all: I love your videos ! Second: Do you know the bands Shinedown and Halestorm? Pretty sure you do. I would love to know what singing technique they use and what it’s called when they .. kinda .. it’s hard to describe this sound. It sounds like when you clear your throat. It’s a very deep and strong sound. Listen to Shinedowns cover of Simple Man. (When he sings: “...you love and understand”) or other songs, he does it all the time. I am so impressed by this and I really want to learn this technique, I can only do this (in the slightest way tho) when I’m not swallowing and there’s saliva in my throat but it feels not right. Could you explain that? A video lesson (someday) would be awesome ! Keep rockin 🤘 greetings from Germany

Hi Ken, I've got a question. I try to difference between twang and belt. What I know is that twang has two variants oral twang and nasal twang and the resonance in the first is in the teeth and in the second in the nose.... And It seems to me that belting is like a louder variation of oral twang... Could you clear me this question? Thanks Ken you give so much help with your videos already.

Mr Ken. Is the building a mix voice the same as extending your chest voice, or is can you build your chest voice to higher notes, apart from the mix voice. And Secondly what is a vocal growl and how do you do that?

That was very helpful. I'm always looking for information to improve my singing. I am singing since the last year and I learned so much. Thank you for uploading. When I sing I try to find the right balance between tension and relaxation. Even if you sing louder you have to stay relaxed even though your body is under a balanced amount of tension. So learning to sing is as hard as learning an instrument.

yes, I am very careful. I take care of what it feels like and how it sounds like when I practise. If I feel any discomfort, I know that I am doing something wrong and I also listen to my records over and over again and there are always things I discover that have to be improved.
