VSI manufactures jet agitated hydroseeders - the smaller version (110 gal) can go on a gator or small trailer or be mounted in your truck bed. The idea is you buy one for your own renovation, make videos about it, then get customers from that and go start a business. It would only take a few folks in your HOA to start talking and you're golden. With that "thinner" mix you can still use seed, starter fert, Meso, tack and use that as a general overseed for a lawn. This will deliver much better success than traditional aeration and overseed. Here is the contest you can enter to win one of the small units: vsinnovation.com/pages/hydroseeder-giveaway

Thanks! I am just starting to build a side hustle with my son in our HOA. It has been a great lesson for him so far: power of word of mouth, a job well done the FIRST time, time management and oh yes, dominating the other lawns. I have been wanting to add more than the usual mow and blow. Fall Reno time is nearly upon us in transition zone. Thanks LCN.

On the sod farm we always gave our KBG a healthy shot of nitrogen in November to carry it through the winter. Above freezing and below 50 degrees the roots are progressing, even though the top shows no progression.

Great video Allyn. As a KBG'er in Kansas City, I can certainly vouch for the slow-grow. To combat the erosion, we have a local company here who has a rye/kbg seed mix. Lets the rye establish quickly to hold the kbg in place while it takes its sweet ass time growing. Another strategy for the arsenal. Rye can also be cut nice and short if that's you're thing!

The product that makes hyrdoseeding work well on areas affected by water runoffs is called Tackifier, Ewing Irrigation sells a version of this product called Tacking Agent 3. If you have a smaller lawn but has slopes that makes seeding difficult due to wash outs, you can buy these tackifier and apply them over your seed to hold them in place. Use a watering can but use a drill to enlarge the holes to make pouring easier for the tackifier. Don't apply to seeds directly though, cover with peat moss and apply the tackifier over it.

@katiebarnes6926
@katiebarnes6926 2 жыл бұрын
Hey can you tell me more about your experience with spf.
@tkirchmann
@tkirchmann 2 жыл бұрын
@@katiebarnes6926 Sure! I originally planted it as a monostrand. It has done well but not fantastic. Also if you are looking for a Midnight type colour you should be aware it's not a particularly dark shade of green for a KBG. I chose it despite being so far north because my lawn faces south and we get 3-4 weeks of no rain and 90f (32C) weather every summer. I also can only water once per week per bylaw. This typically wipes out most people's cool season lawns on my street every year. Once the SPF 30 established itself I overseeded with award as it is a little darker and a little less heat/drought tolerant. My neighbors lawns are a brown/straw/just dead coloured right now and mine is bright green. If I was to do this again I would change 2 things that may help it perform fantastic. 1) I would mix with a PR and 2) I would seed in the late summer/early fall instead of the spring like I did. The PR will give the young seed and grass some shade and help with soil moisture while it is maturing but die off easily later in the heat leaving you with just KBG (unlike TTTF) and planting it in the spring didn't give it enough time to mature before the heat so a bunch of SPF 30 got killed off in the summer. Planting in late summer/early fall will give it time to establish if summer heat/drought is your issue. Also if you are planting in a heat/drought condition don't skip on phosphorus as Ky x Tx has deeper roots than a lot of KBG. Any other questions please don't hesitate to ask!

I love my KBG lawn, it was worth the effort in getting it established. Quality seed is the key, i have no fungus, tolerates drought very well as I don’t have an irrigation system and once hot weather breaks it bounces back beautifully. I have very little weeds, and all it takes is an extra dose of fertilizer. ROI has been amazing.

This video posted just at the right time. My 'second' lawn was heavily regraded and renovated last Fall. Admittedly, I have been lackluster about watering this Summer, and have also been slow with nitrogen apps during the hot season. I did apply Scott's starter fertilizer at seeding and again in the early Spring. I also have done an app of Humic/Fulvic and Milo just prior to Summer. The weeds are currently winning out. I spot sprayed this weekend with a tank mix of 2-4D and Quinclorac. Hopefully, there will be some improvement soon. To follow up, I will apply nitrogen by liquid, and de-thatch when the weeds die back some. When temps drop 🤞🏼, mechanically aerate and moderate to heavy overseed, alongside a Tenacity ap (if appropriate). Zone 5 fine Fescue/KBG. Is this a good approach? I'd love that hydroseeder as the 'third' lawn is next in line and it is mostly hills. Thanks again, LCN!

I live in Minnesota, Eden Prairie, suburb of Minneapolis. I did my lawn renovation 3 or 4 years ago using Seed Superstore KBG. With KBG, it seems like it takes FOREVER to germinate and start growing. September is too late to seed KBG here unless you get lucky with a warm "Indian Summer". I put mine down in September and didn't have a blade of grass come up. I had "bare ground" all fall and winter. With that, the following Spring, it took off and came in nicely. In my opinion, KBG is one of the most beautiful grasses you can have, however, it requires a ton of water to stay looking great. Mine would look great every Spring with lots of rain, but keeping it looking that way on "city water" would bankrupt me. Even watering twice a week wasn't enough to keep it green during these hotter, dryer, Minnesota summers we're having now. It would still go dormant. It would come back in September, once the hot, dry weather ended, but it aggravated me because I have a beautiful lawn for about 2 months a year, May and September. I decided this year to let it go. It was a very hot, dry, summer. No watering, no fertilizer, nothing. I killed it off, what was left of it, in mid August. I'm switching to TTTF. While I believe KBG "looks better", I want grass that stays green all summer, that doesn't require the amount of water that KBG does. I planted Pete's (GCI) spreader TTTF and going to see how this works out. My co-worker went with TTTF when he did his renovation several years ago. He watered his lawn once a week, or even 10 days, and his stayed green all summer long, while my KBG would go dormant. Minnesota summers ain't what they used to be. They're getting hotter and dryer and I'm hoping TTTF can "keep me in the green game" without sending me to the poor house because of city water bills 😭😭😭😭.
@2amaysn
@2amaysn Жыл бұрын
I'm in Detroit. I do a dormant seeding with Midnight Kentucky Grass around Thanksgiving. It takes like 21-30 days to germinate. So it will survive the winter. You don't have to water as the snow will keep it moist during the freeze and thaw through the winter.

Looks great, I wish I could do that as well to my yards. I have one that looks exactly like that, and one that is is 90-95% weeds.
@Thelawncarenut

we found that the Meso in the mix works good to kill off existing weeds too. We put it in there as a pre-emergent but it does kill off a ton of existing weeds at the same time so it has alot of benefit that way.

Kbg is so difficult to establish, just wait until next year when it really takes off! Our Minnesota growing season is so short! Takes two years to be established

May have to try this out after the next bi- annual burn down of the lawn 😂 But how does one kill it if you decide to do a reno?
@Thelawncarenut
@Thelawncarenut 2 жыл бұрын
You like that KBG struggle 😂. The best chem I can think of to kill it off should you need to is diquat. It's a non-selective herbicide too. But I can tell you, once you get the ProVista, you won't want to change up again. Think about it, with your reel mowing, this has a built in PGR. That's the real appeal for you reel low guys. StriperMan is sodding his front with it, he's all in.

@@Thelawncarenut quite frankly I’m sick of kbg and will be overseeding prg next week but seems this stuff fixes a lot of it’s downsides and I’ll be keeping an eye on it

I just leveled and seeded kbg in louisville ky. Got some sprouts after a week. I'm sure I'll need to overseed again come spring. Ducks have been terrorizing my yard hopefully just for worms. I opted out of straw mats thinking I'd get overwhelmed with weeds. Maybe should have used em

Here I use 16-16-16 but I find my kbg gets “lawn rust” so I just used 32-0-3 with 5% iron. Is it better to use something with really high nitrogen like 40-0-0 or the 32-0-3 with iron?
