Traveled from Nairobi to Mombasa in 1974. Elegant travel, took the overnight. Saw Fort Jesus, stayed at Children’s Resort with my family. Day trip back & saw lions in Tsavo. A great adventure!

I remember taking this train when I was a child. I was 8 years old, travelled there with my parents and siblings. It was an epic journey. I still have fond memories of the luxury train travel (unusual at the time for an African country) and the comfort. Not only this, but this journey was like travelling in a safari, where you could watch elephants, lions, zebras and giraffes from the cabin. These memories will linger in me forever. It was my favorite trip during the school holidays. The service was professional, the beds and bathroom were very clean, the food in the restaurant was impeccable.

I did this trip a couple of times in the years 1960 to 1963 from Mombasa to Nakuru and vice versa. I recall wild animals chasing the train, and beautiful sceneries....

The modern Chinese designed SGR railway has now taken over, this was the old British colonial railway. Where are these people now, it would be nice to do a followup on them today.

Nostalgia, l rode 2nd class first time in that train to my first intern job straight from college, fare was 141/= , 🍺 (White cup export) was 12.50ksh per 300ml, dinner 40/= . Four passengers second class cabin with a double Stack bed each side, beddings (2 sheets and light blanket 20/=). It was my standard transport every 3 months to and from Nairobi. Life was too good. We could hire 4 guys one cube and our girlfriends another cube. They didn't allow gender mixing 😀 but we used to just stay at the bar and hammer beers 🍻 till 1.30am when the restaurant closed but one could do a takeaway !

wow thanks for the video. In those days travelling by train was an adventure to look forward to. That was my favorite time especially during the school holidays. It was a 13 hour journey that I did not regret. Wonderful simple food and professionally laid out beds for the night for first and second class passengers. what an experience!!
