I don’t even have a B58, my s58 m3C is my first BMW and when I stumbled on your Channel it gave me so much insight on the tuning world of bmws and I thank you for that. My 2022 m3 is my first BMW and all your videos help me understand a lot about aftermarket world of bmws. Now do a video like this with S58 lol. Keep up the great work!

I had read this : forged pistons , IIRC , the thermal conduction of forged part makes them to expand or shrink more than non forged so with forged pistons you HAVE to put your engine on good temp before "using" it they will expand with temp . or they will scratch the cylinders if used too cold ( because shrinked ) sorry for my english .
@weduhpeople8504
@weduhpeople8504 Ай бұрын
Yes and will have larger p/w clearance so until warmed up they will be a little noisy.
@adamarndt7617
@adamarndt7617 Ай бұрын
I know "the internet" always says that "forged pistons expand more than cast pistons", but it's not actually that simple. Most modern cast pistons use hypereutectic alloys that contains a lot of silicon, high silicon alloys are harder and expand less and can run with tighter clearances, and are quieter when cold; cast hypereutectic alloys can't deal with as much detonation as a forged, low-silicon alloy like 2628 and when hypereutectic gets damaged it tends to explode into a million tiny pieces. Forged pistons tend to come in two alloys: 2618 -a high thermal expansion, low silicon content alloy that's can flex more before breaking and has the most detonation resistance and requires more piston-to-wall clearances. 4023 -a low thermal expansion, high silicon content alloy that gives you much more strength than a hypereutectic cast piston and also provides the benefits of a low thermal expansion alloy. (It's really the aluminum alloy that determines whether the piston expands a lot or a little as it heats, and there are FORGED pistons that are both high thermal expansion and low thermal expansion alloys.)
@weduhpeople8504
@weduhpeople8504 Ай бұрын
So being the b58 comes with forged internals the pistons they should be 2618 alloy with a high aluminum content, if they are 4032 alloy they have a lower aluminum content, a higher silicone content but they can have smaller piston to wall clearances. If they are cast they are not as strong and more susceptible to damage if any detonation event happens.

🪰😆. Great explanation of the cylinder and reasoning for the cylinder shape. Interesting regarding the two front auxiliary coolers. On my m140i pre PPF/OPF I only have the one and that plumbs into the charge cooling/air conditioning circuit I believe

Right, I think the second one was only available on the other side of the front for the PPF version. Since the PPF is getting hotter.

Hi I’m a really big fan of your channel, I think you’re the most informative BMW guy on the internet. I’ve seen you on the forums and then unknowingly seen you on KZfaq and finally made the connection, I was impressed by you in 2 separate areas, both of which were impressive on their own, combined? You’re the guy. I’m nowhere near as knowledgeable or as capable as you when it comes to working on these cars but I have a question for you, I’m someone that has OEM Anxiety, for example if I swap something that on paper should be a massive upgrade over the OEM part I for some reason have anxiety that it’s going to cause a problem. I love all the modern B58 cars/suvs, if I wanted to replace the OEM charge cooler manifold on a modern B58 with an aftermarket charge cooler manifold, is there any downside whatsoever to doing that? Is there any potential hazards or unforeseen complications? Or is it better across the board no question? Looking at do88, CSF, wagner manifolds. Do you have any preference? Will likely match the intercooler, trans oil cooler, and auxiliary radiators, to whichever manifold I choose.

Hey Kern, I have my car ready to dyno tune this week with the mods listed below and I want to have an idea of how much HP I should be looking at when it's done. My tuner is good, but I want to make sure I'm getting what I'm supposed to lol List of mods: Intake with turbo inlet Catless downpipe Active Autowerke exhaust Charge pipe Dinan spark plug coils X-hp transmission tune stage 2 Fuel-it flex fuel kit (I'll be tuning with E40) Tuning platform will be ECUtek

@gregkara427 Ай бұрын
depends what car you have and which version of the b58, assuming you dont have any fueling upgrades you should be around 480-550, keep your tq under 600 to be safe and not slip 4th gear (trans limit is 700), dont tune 5th and 6th for power, try to get your powerband in 1st to 4th gear, 5th and 6th dont really hold much power, also be careful about raising your line pressures in XHP, i personally would stay on stage 2 MAX, never hit stage 3 unless you need it for a single drag run, let me know if you have more questions.

Great video providing a lot if insight! Hoping someone can help me out with the following; i have a M140i, stage2+ / stock turbo, all necessary bolt-on mods done, ran 50.000 km, and have been experiencing some power loss when going WOT. Didn't get any CEL's. Did several checks and ran logs; the cause appeared to be advanced ignition timing on cylinder 1, but no knocking. Changed the sparkplug, coilpack and injector, but no results. Further checked the cylinder with boroscope, all looked good. Almost no carbon build up on the valves or piston, no visible damage to cylinder walls. Compression test and leakdown test values were all good. They can't find the cause of the advanced ignition timing, so we've come to the point to taking the engine out and pull the piston of cylinder 1 to check. Anyone has any ideas what to check, or maybe some direction to look for before we do so? Appreciate your feedback.

Great video. I don't think people understand just how amazing the cooling setup is on these cars. Being able to run warmer coolant temps at highway cruise and then cooler coolant temps when going WOT for a while is a magical thing. I REALLY wish someone made a retrofit that would use the BMW electronic thermostats in an old engine and a simple controller for them. My one "wonder" on the B58 Gen2 engines cooling is whether the electric water pump that controls the intercooler circuit is really up to the task when you do things like install a 3 pass CSF heat exchanger for the intercooler circuit. (3 pass heat exchangers can dramatically slow the coolant flow rate vs. a single pass design and I really wish I knew the limitations of the stock pump and if there were any aftermarket pumps that could boost the flow rate.)

I think it’s more about longevity of the car or SUV in the long-term. If the BMW X5/X7 can last relatively problem free for 150,000 miles that would definitely be a win.

On B58 cracked ring lands: any evidence on whether this tends to be detonation due to a bad tune / not-enough-octane for the tune vs. heat causes the rings to but / not-enough-gap with big boost? (Curious at what point someone should crack into the bottom end and gap the rings, mostly...)

I’m running a catless downpipe, mst intake and everything else stock, i’ve started to noticed that after doing a small pull and letting of the gas, sometimes white/ish smoke comes out of the exhaust but only sometimes, coolant level looks okay although i do top it off every other week. any ideas of what i could start testing? or could it be simply the downpipe.
