The second half of the lesson is perfect for those taking the PE exam!
Seismic design can actually be pretty simple if you know where to look in the ASCE 7-16. Today the team goes step by step through the ASCE 7-16 using the simplified seismic design method. We cover a real PE exam seismic example problem that you could very well see on the EXAM! We just got new leather seats in the auditorium so get comfy, and if you're nervous about seismic, we got ice cold Avion water for ya.

Is the value for W always added straight accross or would you ever use load combinations?
@komaldeepsingh3265
@komaldeepsingh3265 2 жыл бұрын
The code says the portion of deal load load assigned to level x (not the full dead load). I guess since they are asking for the nearest value, so 2000 is the closet one. But In real life scenario for same example, it will be the dead load of floor 2 + walls + roof (in other words, all the dead load above that point). Is that right?

its the DL at that level, which would be the floor + 1/2 walls from below and 1/2 walls from above.

your answer does not match with the answers A thru D???

Robert go to 7:05 that is the answer for the problem but then I add additional information to go outside of the problem to explain seismic forces

The title is misleading. This is only applicable to structures located in none seismic prone area.

sorry for the confusion - this is the simplified method (which is only permitted for seismic design category A)

@@Kestava_Engineering I think it is not only for A. In 12.14.1.1 it includes A, B, C, D, if a building has maximum 3 stories above grade, and meets other conditions. It should be usfule for light frame residential, as for that type share walls offsets are permited (up to 2 storyes). This method is used in WFCM for dwellings in table 2.6.
