@@pittsburgh-gal I was reading some comments on one of Dr. Eric Westman's recent videos and was surprised at how the "keto police" came after him for being pragmatic. It's funny how people who have been doing "internet keto" for a year feel qualified to school a Duke University doctor who has been practicing keto for over 20 years.

I definitely learned to pay close attention to serving size the hard way. It's shameful how they manipulate the numbers to make a product appear keto or low carb by using totally unrealistic serving sizes. I also hate that they can hide a multitude of bad ingredients for Keto under the umbrella of "natural flavors." I wish they were required to factually disclose all ingredients.

Great video, this kind of info is always helpful. My one "Keto" shopping suggestion? Randomly re-check items you buy regularly. Sometimes they change formulas! Suddenly your once perfectly Keto item has less than stellar ingredients added. You might have to reconsider your stance on it.

As the PSA said many years ago..."read the label, set a better table". I am not big into math, I just try to stay clean about 90 percent of the time and keep my sweet consumption down. Like you, I rarely count carbs anymore as I know my body well enough to determine my limits. Good info Steve.

This is a good review - I hope there is a part 2 that talks about some more of those ingredients we see on labels that we need to know what they are and why they might be questionable. I definitely consider serving size and wish they listed a standard weight along side. 100 gm would be useful IF you know how to convert into ounces...without a calculator.

A good rule of thumb if something is sweet and yummy you can guarantee it has sugar in it sugar is what makes things sweet!!! you have to wonder any time you put something in your mouth and it's sweet you got to wonder where's the sweetness coming from? is it natural or is it from sugar? and either way it's probably not going to be keto friendly! let's be honest it's very hard to do this diet if you have a sweet tooth, if you just love sugary products, if you're like me and you like mostly unami and Savory taste bencotto is a lot easier for people who really likes Savory and fat makes it a lot easier to do Keto

@@nathanbond8165 I have a sweet tooth. I bake something once or twice a week. A day doesn't go by, where I don't use some sweetener (a teaspoon in my coffee, 1/2 tbsp to my greek yogurt or in the baked goods), which doesn't bother me because I consider erythritol and stevia safe. I have lost 32 kg (since november 2020 but most of it in one year) and kept them off. Keto (or probably low-carb at 40 g carbs/day) is great for me, because it allows me to trick that sweet tooth and everything is so satiating. I haven't tried other diets and I can only imagine how difficult they would be for me and my sweet tooth. When I hit 100 kg at 25 years old, I decided, that I can no longer delay starting a diet. I was lucky I saw an add for keto instant meals. Ketosis made sense to me and sounded like just what I needed so I bought those instant foods. Looking back they would be more truthfuly described as low-carb and only lead to ketosis because they were also low calorie, but it introduced keto to me, gave quick initial results and included a gradual shift to low-carb whole foods as the goal of their weight loss program.

@@eliskarutteova2653 yeah I hear you in general the more you stay away from ultra-processed preserve Foods the healthier you're going to be and you're going to just naturally lose weight anyway if you eat Foods in their raw natural state the other day I was at a juice bar picking up a delivery not for me and I'm watching them baked all these supposed healthy juices I'm watching them take like a pound of carrots apples and celery to make this smoothie what you see on the other side of the juicer is all the most important part of those items the fiber the pulp gets spit out and thrown away and so what you wind up with a cup of just pure sucrose that's slightly flavored like the item that it was before concentrated you would never sit down and eat an entire pound of carrots yet one of those smoothies you are drinking sucrose with none of the fiber and the fibers the most important part of those vegetables I wonder why Americans are so obese and have some real problems we even find a way to take naturally healthy foods turn them into Sugar shakes and the sad part is people drinking those smoothies they think they're being healthy but when you look at the nutritional value look at all the freaking sugar that's in those smoothies you might as well just go to the store and buy a pint of ice cream but anyway I digress is that the wonderful thing about keto for me is that longer slave to my stomach because ketones are a natural appetite suppressor before I was on keto I had to eat three meals a day and if I didn't eat enough I would be angry and get headaches and feel groggy you know from Constance insulin spikes but the beautiful thing about being on keto is your blood insulin and sugar is so stable that you don't get this ravenous hunger and so I eat when I feel like you should eat and if I'm super busy and I have to skip lunch no big problem I'll just wait till dinner and when you do eat a meal because of the very satisfying high fat and protein content it's stays with you it's satisfying there are times when I get home really late like 9 or 10 at night and I haven't had dinner yet and I think well I should make something for dinner but I don't feel like cooking I'll just eat a snack I'll have some pepperoni and slices of cheese on keto crackers and that's my dinner and if you know the real secret to weight loss is simply eating less calories ever me I think that's the Real Genius behind the keto lifestyle is that you're not as hungry because you've stabilized your blood sugar therefore you eat less and when you eat less you lose weight it's pretty simple and ingenious

@@eliskarutteova2653 in fact what's amazing is that once your body relearn that it can burn fat for fuel it stopped sending you all these hunger signals all day long so before I started keto I would get up in the morning I'd be hungry first thing in the morning I have to eat a big breakfast now I just have coffee with heavy whipping cream and some of that sugar-free vanilla flavoring cuz I love vanilla and then I start working and honestly sometimes I don't have breakfast until almost lunchtime before keto I would have never have been able to go that long without stuffing my gut I pretty much don't even have to smack anymore at the beginning of Keto I did snack a lot but once your body goes into full ketosis you don't even have the desire to snack anymore because now my body knows that it can burn fat for energy instead of me having to constantly dump food into my body the ironic part is is that what I do for a living is deliver food LOL so I drive around all day long with these super yummy food deliveries in my car and I'm not even tempted anymore I literally have no desire to eat this restaurants fast-food garbage anymore I think the really awesome part about keto is that you realize how much of a slave you were to food before going keto and then after going keto you just realize how liberating it is to not have to worry about and think about what am I going to have for breakfast or what am I going to have for lunch or dinner because honestly if you can't get ahold of Keto food you can just skip a meal and you don't have all the crazy side effects that you would normally have

@@eliskarutteova2653 this idea that you are supposed to eat three meals a day is just absurd and completely an invention of the American food industry to sell more food you should eat when you're hungry but our ancestors hundreds of thousands of years ago they did not eat three meals a day they were lucky if they got to eat once a day oftentimes if they weren't able to find animals to hunt they might go 2 or 3 days without eating the reason people have to eat three meals a day is because they eat a bunch of carbs and sugar which sends their blood glucose and insulin levels through the roof making you ferociously hungry and you don't think scientist and nutritionist haven't figured this out why do you think they put sugar and carbs in everything and I mean everything!! Bianchi do you have to be so careful and read the labels of everything it's unbelievable the way that they sneak sugar and carbs into something that has no business being in that food the other day I bought some Italian sausage Lynx cuz I like sausage and I was going to have it with some sauerkraut like an idiot I just assumed well it's me no carbs and I didn't read the back of the package each one of those sausages has added sugar and 5 grams of carbs per sausage so I had to throw those away there goes $5 that taught me to always check the label you cannot just assume because even if it's meat that it doesn't have sugar and carbs in it but also people think that being on a keto diet is super expensive quality cuts of protein and cheese and eggs are more expensive than carbs but because you can't eat all that garbage fast food and restaurant food you actually save a lot of money because you're forced to cook your own meals and when you make your own meals at home you save a lot of money so actually eating keto is cheaper than the standard American diet even though you're eating more high-quality proteins and vegetables

Hi Steve, i have a couple of tips. 1- Eat whole foods only, when you can, use organic if possible. 2. If you like a product then see if there's a keto recipe on line that you can make yourself as you are always in control of what goes into the dish. 3. As you stated, READ the food label and if it has more than 3 ingredients or more ingredient's you cant pronounced or understand, put it back on the shelf 4. If you can afford to, keep a CGM on your arm and track your glucose response, it will let you know how your own body is responding to the food you are consuming 5. get a Homa-IR or Kraft insulin test. Blood sugar monitoring is only half the picture, knowing you insulin response to sugar test is a great way to see how insulin resistant you are

Very helpful Steve, especially the order in which you decipher labeling. Food companies often make their labeling difficult to read for a reason. First learning the many names for sugar, now the actual amount of carbs per serving. I've opted for as simple (few ingredients) as possible & then make my own so I know what's in it. Seeds oils are #2 on my list of what I look for, after sugars. Thanks for this!

Catalina Crunch cereals are delicious. They are squares that mimic the taste of Cocoa Puffs, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Froot Loops, Golden Grahams etc. and they are crunchy. The key, I think, is to use them sparingly like perhaps a small handful over Keto ice cream as a dessert. I put about 20 of them on small serving of berries, with a couple of chopped walnuts and sprinkle of Bocha Sweet then pour on a couple of tablespoons of cream. I have no idea what that does for blood sugar spike, but its probably cheaper and just as satisfying as Quest bars if I'm craving a crunchy treat.

Before starting keto, I read a lot of "keto" labels - most weren't keto! Or had unacceptable ingredients, like soy or sunflower oil. So, the lesson learned is the same as a regular healthy diet, Don't Eat Prepared Foods, even so-called "keto" foods. Altho, I have found a few acceptable things (at Costco) Seite Grain free chips, the Keto Nut granola (great on homemade full fat yogurt!) You just have to really read the labels well.

Every time I let my guard down and skip the label reading, I wind up doing a face palm later...

The lighting in my office makes me look tanner and my hair darker. Maybe I should move my kitchen down here...

I ran across your channel as I have decided to adopt a Keto lifestyle having gained a lot of weight post menopause. I relate to your story completely, however, I always maintained a trim figure by starving myself ( while eating and drinking terribly) thank you for your content! Have you ever worked as an announcer on radio or Tv?😊

I used to be a corporate trainer for many years, so that's where I learned to project to the back of the room without being too loud for the front of the room. Thank you for the kind words.

Needed a refresher on the art and science of reading labels. Been at this 5 years, still have bought stuff without reading or fully understanding the nutritional voodoo ticket. Before packaged food goes into your cart or before you check-out: Read the Label. Read the label again. Ask yourself... did I read the label? Did I understand the label? Did I pull out my phone and lookup something I didn't understand? Also, if you read the label after purchase, you can still return it.

I'm with you on the Keto police ingredients people.🤦‍♀️ I enjoy the Keto Nut granola. Did not like the taste and stomach issues with the Catalina Crunch cereal. People need to do what works for them. Thanks, an informative video. 👍

We have the 100g column on our nutrition panels in Australia too and its the first thing i check. I've also found our serving sizes are pretty realistic

I'd love to see that in the US. Sometimes, it will list both the "serving" and "package" macros.

I can say that one of the biggest benefits of technology improving is being able to look up European food labeling from anywhere in the world. It's shameful that, in America and here in Canada, food labels aren't standardized to 100g. It wouldn't even take more than an hour for these big companies to change their labels, but a look at our current education system shows that expecting things to catch up with the times is a fool's errand. I also wish that items like bacon had a separate listing for "cooked". By the way, the second you brought up those "cheese" crackers, I knew exactly what you were about to say. Seen them a number of times.

@SeriousKeto lol! I understand! I feel the same way about banana & / or peanut butter. 🤮 I've been on many diets and PB flavors is especially over-saturated and yucky 99% of the time.
