If you are purely after strength and hypertropthy I can understand why you are not a fan of kettlebells. However, if you are not so singularly focused on strength and have more balanced fitness goals then KBs are possibly the best tool for that. As the saying goes "no one hates kettlebells for what they are - they hate them for what they think they are".

I got into kettlebells for a time. I got certified RKC. I trained a lot of clients with kettlebells. I know what they are. I know what they do. I don’t use them any more. They are mostly a waste of time except for someone who doesn’t exercise at all, as beginning exercises to just get them moving and on an exercise schedule or possibly for someone who isn’t going to do any other type of weight exercise ever for any reason (who? I don’t know). And even that person is going to cease making any king of progress in a fairly short amount of time. So kettlebells aren’t useless. But neither are rocks in your yard (you can lift and roll them for exercise), neither are soup cans (you can curl them), neither are sacks of potatoes, buckets of water or shake weights.

@Sean Williams Kettlebells are far from a waste of time. So many people are stuck in the muscle and fitness world of thinking. There are different types of strength. While barbell benchpress, squats, and dealifts are excellent ways of building strength and size. They're not the be all, end all. Most world class powerlifters can't climb a rope, a wall, or maneuver an obstacle course with the ability as someone who trains in calisthenics. To say that any of those tasks doesn't require strength would be disingenuous. There's a reason that most mma fighters and boxers aren't built like powerlifters and body builders. What your goal is will dictate as to how you lift and exercise.

The barbell is king but KBs have their uses; at a fraction of cost of an olympic bar. You just have to not fall into the KB rabbit hole, if you own more than 3 it's time to repent.
@Maximer77
@Maximer77 Жыл бұрын
Barbells and KBs are simply different exercise tools that accomplish 2 different tasks. I think the anti-KB slant comes from the bodybuilder mindset where strength and hypertrophy are virtually singularly pursued. KBs and barbells are different beasts and people need to comparing them like they're in competition. It's and apple to oranges comparison.
@Maximer77
@Maximer77 Жыл бұрын
@Roger Vieira Sorta... they definitely provide resistance, but in a slightly different manner. Barbells are super efficient in isolating resistance to a 2-dimensial plane of movement (part of the reason they're so great at strength and hypertrophy development). It allows for more focused isolation on a particular muscle group. KBs are much better, however, at creating resistance in a 3-dimensional plane and allows that resistance to be spread over a greater number of muscle groups (although at a lower intensity for an individual muscle as compared to barbells). I guess my point in the end is that there really shouldn't be this barbell vs kb animosity, but we should be looking at them in a more practical sense dependent on ultimate fitness goals and the environment/manner we have to accomplish them.
@Nickraculous
@Nickraculous Жыл бұрын
@Roger Vieira I think what he is trying to say is bbs and dbs weight are balanced and centered where kbs are not, so curls, presses, squats etc with kbs introduce extra difficulty due to their offset weight distribution.

I have two of most of the competition kettlebells. It was the best fitness investment I ever made. I am immunocompromised, cannot use a gym, and live in a condo, so a squat rack is not viable. These kettlebells in two years have done far more for me than gyms ever did. I don’t really know how to explain it. I have thought about getting an Olympic bar and learning some lifts outside that do not require a squat rack that can increase load, but I suspect some people (like me) respond to kettlebells better than you seem to believe. I don’t know about Pavel’s hardstyle stuff. I have been doing sport-style technique but really heavy on Olympic-style lifts. It might be that I am doing ghetto Olympic lifting and getting some progress because real Olympic lifting is obviously effective. I dunno. I had also considered building a wooden yoke to hang these bells and try to adapt some of your Starting Strength programming but I am not sure exactly how to make that work. I am kind isolated here and trying to figure things out after society left the seven million of us with immune system problems on house arrest for the rest of our lives.
@toddknode752
@toddknode752 Жыл бұрын
why can't you put a squat rack in your condo? Having a condo means you can't deadlift... not squat. I get it. I have a townhouse and my neighbors complained once I started deadlifting. So, I just no longer deadlift. I have a set of KBs from 15-70 and they are great. One thing you might think of is a prowler sled and some plates to put on it. Store it in your condo and push it in your parking area. I do that on a weekly basis. Sled push 20 yards then armor building complex, 5 rounds.
@noosphericaltarzan
@noosphericaltarzan Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I have decided to get an Oly bar and learn Olympic lifting outside where I train kettlebell sport. I train every day now, and on those in-between days I have enjoyed training olympic lifts so much that I want to integrate the two things. For instance, I notice better athletic performance improvements from only doing overhead squats, squat snatches, split jerks -> split squats, etc. I also prefer most of my work in jerks and snatches now rather then presses and squats, which I now see as supplementary movements. I don’t know that I need a squat rack. I might get two tall plyo boxes to practice jerks only in my second room without making the Planet Fitness neighbors mad. I dunno. Maybe I will get a squat rack someday and go back to strength training, and do the deadlifts outside. Right now, I am enjoying kettlebell sport quite a lot, and am very interested in weightlifting because I love these patterns so much.

One of my biggest mistakes was taking up KBs. I stupidly sold off my barbel and plates, in place of KBs, and greatly regretted it. I really struggled to build any real or strength or muscle with them and lost a lot of muscle. The swing has got to be the most overrated exercise ever! Burn fat like nothing else they claim? Well i got to a point where i was swinging a 32kg KB for 300 swings 4 times a week and doing other KB exercises on other days. And didnt lose any fat at all. Sure my forearms got stronger as did my posterior chain, but hardly lost any fat at all. Plus its an incredibly boring exercise. I had less body fat when I lifted barbells and walked more. Ive since sold off most of my KBs and bought myself a barbell and some plates. Its like coming back home. In my experience KBs are vastly overrated/overstated in what they can achieve and do.
