I love watching this. A lot of other carvers have great designs on paper or start with rough-outs first - in other words, they already have in mind what they are trying to do. Kevin just takes a piece of wood and just starts hacking away at it - and ends up with a masterpiece. I need to learn how to do that.

Thank you Dmitri. It’s the way I got use to doing it over the years. Comes with practice I guess

I have been trying to carve every day, even if for a few minutes. What I admire about Kevin is the ferocity of going at that wood. He can do that from the years and years he has had of practice. I peel slivers off at a time cause I am unsure of myself. My project turns out ok, but it was a lot of slivers In getting there. I am trying to adopt a new motto of “practice makes better”. Don’t want to say perfect, but if I am better in 6 months, that is a win!
@KevinCoates98 Жыл бұрын
Thank you. What you’re saying is absolutely right. Everyone starts out with making little chips. The more you carve the more confident you become. In my opinion no matter how long you been carving there’s still room to get better. Practice practice

Well you certainly picked his nose clean there, sorry but I had to put that one in. Fine very well done I didn't think that it would be so good when you started with a knife that looked like it had been broken. Pity you don't talk during the carving and letting us know what you are thinking about what's going on with it.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Like very other whittler in the world, an ouch from the knife is almost inevitable. Glad to see it was only slight. Great little happy gnome in the flat plane style but with a wonderful rounded face. I like the mash up of styles. Definitely will work on a similar one. I'm particularly curious about the oil finish you use Kevin. Why not just boiled linseed oil?
@KevinCoates982 жыл бұрын
Thank you Joe. It wasn’t a knife this time. I did it with a drill lol. I used linseed oil for years. Worked perfect but took awhile for it to dry. The oil I’m using now dries fairly quick. The best thing I liked with the linseed oil was how the smell stayed with the carving
@joebtemp2 жыл бұрын
@@KevinCoates98 There's something about the smell of boiled linseed oil for sure :) I thin mine down to one part oil two parts odourless thinner (more or less) and I also brush it on but it still takes a day to completely dry

Hi Mr. Coates my home is located about 50 miles from the highest mountain east of the mississippi. Last summer my wife and I took her son up there for a picnic and walked a trail, lots of rocks and moss everywhere. Said all that to say this. My desire is to master gnomes and take several up and place them under rocks and write my address on the bottom for people to tell me how far the gnomes got to travel. With your videos it's possible now. I'll just have to scale them down a bit.Thank you!!!!

Mike it was a piece of scrap wood. It measured roughly 4.5”h x 2”w x 1.25”thick. Don’t know if I could do much with writing a book or even if there’s much demand for it anymore. You can pretty much find whatever you want online nowadays. Thank you Mike

And that's why you wear carving gloves and use sharpened tools. Lucky you didn't slice into your finger much deeper.
@KevinCoates982 жыл бұрын
You’re right Jeff. People should wear a carving glove. I carve without one because that’s all I was ever use to for 25 years. I did try a glove once but it felt too awkward for me. Btw I didn’t cut myself with the knife here in this video. I did it with my drill earlier that day. With that being said I have cut myself many times the first few years I was carving

@@KevinCoates98 My apologies. I was making an assumption based on what the video showed. At 14:00 there was no slice on your forefinger, than at 14:05 after a lapse, there was one visible that looked recent. My thoughts were you stopped recording to tend to your injury.
