Struming but harder is something that if one works upon it will be very helpful with increasing levels. Good rythmn really makes a huge difference. A melody without rythmn is not a melody, it's just a bunch of notes mixed.

I play guitar for over 20 years, however, I learned by myself mainly to play Christian songs I like. I never had the intention to play in public, to be a professional, to play in a band, to be in a music ministry or so. Eventually, I begin playing in Church, study the theory (all by myself), but because I learned alone, I lack proper technique, always struggled with rhythm, tempo, and find it hard to play with other musicians. Your videos are helping me to finally fill the gap and pick up the little things I left behind in my guitar journey... Thank you so much!

First let me just say I think your videos are very well made and you are good at getting your point across. I've certainly watched my fair share of videos but yours are absolutely my favourites so far. Having said that I think this video opened something up for me. I play drums, for fun, and used to have a band back like 20 years ago (Swedish Black/Death Metal stuff) and I taught myself to play by like watching other drummers and then figured it out from there. So music theory is not my strong suit, I never took any lessons. But stuff like this just maskes it all so much easier to understand. I kind of always wondered what the strumming was coming from in theory, and this cleared that up. It's a similar revelation as when Steven on GuitarZoom explained why certain chords are called a certain name, and then showed all the notes on the fret and talked about why that's good to know etc. I've been noodling for 20 years on the guitar and videos like this (and Steves) make it easier to understand for someone who never got lessons or doesn't have time for them but try to make an effort anyway. :D Keep e'm coming! :)

Thanks for showing this video, I've been playing for years. I once asked a math teacher why we keep doing the same review over and over and he would say because we forget things as time goes on, I find this true with music sometimes I need to review basic fundamentals before I can move forward. This video turned on a light bulb for me..thankyou!

Thank you so much, this is really very helpfull! But I have a question about the last example you gave with the strumming: 1 2 + + 4 +. I get why the two "+" work as the 3rd beat, but i dont get why you dont use 1+ 2+ before that, while you did use 4+ at the end. The 1rst and 2nd beat as I listen in there seem to me like they are part of the same beat (like 1 +), I mean you did them like it was part of the same eight note. I'm sorry if this sound confusing, english is not my first language. Thank you so much again!

Kevin, I like your style, sense of humor and laid back approach to teaching your lessons. I've taken pro lessons before, so I have some proficiency, not alot. Thus, I have worked on scales previously. Far from perfect but not a complete rookie by any stretch of the imagination. What do you mean when you say you want us to have Lesson One "down cold" before moving on to Lesson Two? Do you mean we need to have the skill of George Harrison? Or, do you mean we can still have some rough edges before we move on to level two? Please advise.
@kevinnickens
@kevinnickens 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! You don't have to be at George Harrison's level but you need to have really really high standards for yourself. The stuff in level 2 isn't going to help you much if you can barely get open chords to ring out clearly, if you know what I'm saying. Some rough edges are acceptable, but don't skip the fundamentals because you want to shred asap. Good luck!

13:09 can someone help me understand what it would look like written in a measure? I used to play violin so I'm just used to reading music and I'm not sure wether he's just assessing the strums in the way he wants or is it like a standard among all guitarists? Are they supposed to fit all in a four four count time signature measure? Like how would it look like since he said "and" one after the other with no beat in between? I'm just confused about that. I wrote down on my paper according to how he strums 1: quarter note, 2+: 2 eighth notes, +: lone eighth note, +: lone eighth note, 4+: 2 eighth notes. Am I right?

For what it's worth, when we came across the very rare 32nd notes in high school band, we were told not to even count them. Just count 16ths and feel that there's an extra in between.
