It is still amazing to me that she had to learn all the lyrics within 48 hours. She knew their previous songs but not Imaginarium. There is a documentary about them asking her and her tentative steps into the first concert. She had a very big burn out the year before she came to Nightwish and this was her first steps on stage again. But bloody hell, she made it so grand. I would love to have her as my vocal coach once.

Well, why not? They have learned over the years (apparently the acceptance of "what happens, happens, and it is all part of the live experience" came about when they nearly fell apart completely in 2012 and brought Floor in to rescue the tour) not to take themselves too seriously and that live shows are a time to have fun. Every show is essentially Nightwish having a party on stage and inviting everybody to come along! Tuomas describes this realisation in an interview, and that it has cured him of his nerves, and we all benefit because in that less stressed atmosphere, the performances are far better. While a little nervousness primes a performer to give a good show (btdt, gtts), having a sleepless night then throwing up before a show is about as poor preparation as you could have.

@@19AngelsSorrow89 My favourite part of any of the live videos from Nightwish is where, in Buenos Aires 2012, as they returned to the stage at the end of the orchestral section of Ghost Love Score (the one where they were still fine-tuning Floor's arrangement of it), Tuomas was carrying a whole pack of chilled bottled water, which he distributed to the audience himself before getting back behind his keyboards. I've never seen another band do that. They appeared to have their crew running a "bucket chain" of bottled water from backstage, too, although that is merely rare among other bands. The love goes both ways.

The most brutal windmills in the business - but could we expect anything less from the Goddess? Tuomas (the keyboard player) runs a very close second. In case nobody has mentioned it her range is about 3 1/2 octaves - approximately B2 to D6 (although we all know she can go higher or lower than that when she feels like it). She can do it all - from operatic to belting to growls and all in the same song (many examples of it here on YT). And she's the Valkyrie Goddess of metal (she is a hair over 6 feet tall, after all - 6'4" with her heels). Happy New Year to you and yours!

Please react to "The Poet and the Pendulum Live". It is said the Tuomas wrote this song/symphony after letting go of their first lead singer Tarja and he fell into a deep depression. The song is said to represent a "musical suicide" and he even said in an interview once that he had two options - he would either commit suicide or write a song where he would kill himself. The song is divided into 5 sections, each containing different themes and styles: 1: White Lands of Empathica, 2: Home, 3:Pacific, 4: Dark Passion Play, and 5: Mother and Father (this last part was written by his parents). It's an extremely powerful song and piece of art, one I'm still affected by everytime I listen to it. So much depth and emotion. And please listen to it with lyrics! I can't wait to see your reaction to this performance and hear your input!!

Fun fact: we call it chicken skin (kippenvel) in The Netherlands as well! Anyway, thanks for doing these vids, really appreciate the insights into some of the music I love from a composers point of view. Could I recommend a view songs for perhaps future reactions? Devin Townsend: there's a bunch of amazing, truly amazing songs that guy has done over his almost three decade career, such as Kingdom (the EMGtv-version; has some of the most incredible vocals, or at least most unexpected vocals; there's another great version of the song from The Retinal Circus, with Anneke van Giersbergen (it's actually a duet of sorts)), Deadhead (at the Royal Albert Hall; such an overwhelming, epic wall of sound, with tortured lyrics presented in a vocal style that chills the brain), Higher (at Plovdiv with a complete freaking symphony orchestra and a full choir, chicken skin guaranteed), Om (again at Plovdiv, another absolute monster song). But I would make the case for Grace, from The Retinal Circus. Almost no reaction vids so far, even though I feel it might be his best work so far. There's an introduction by Steve Vai, it's another colab with Anneke van Giersbergen, a church choir is on it, and it's just 100 mile an hour of like hippy heavy metal. Super uplifting, amazing drive, just a wonderful, masterful song IMO. Speaking of Anneke, how about a reaction to Valley of the Queens, by Ayreon? Sung by Floor, Anneke, and Marcela Bovio. Acoustic guitar, several different flutes, and three of the best female singers alive on one stage. Incredible. And I want to make the case once more for The Poet and the Pendulum, by Nightwish. I really feel that's Tuomas' masterpiece, so far, and his most intimate song, and the most difficult one to perform for him, because of all the pain and misery that's in that song. Emppu and Marko actually go check on him a couple of times during the song, to give some moral support and comfort. But the song has everything, a boy soprano to start things off, a hook/ chorus, that, if you try to sing along with it, will leave you gasping for air, Floor going pretty much full soprano at several stages, an unbelievable visual show that accompanies it. It is about 20 minutes long, so I'd recommend a bigger cup of coffee for that one. ;) Happy new year, and I'm looking forward to some Tool tomorrow!

I normally don’t recommend this so early in a reviewer’s Nightwish journey... but given you’re a (de)composer, I think this would be right up your alley. The Greatest Show on Earth. There are 3 versions of what I consider the best live performance: a low quality, full length; high quality, cutoff before the end (you HAVE to watch through the end credits); and a high quality, full length, WITH subtitles... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mNJmn7iXrrPPd4E.html It is widely held to be their magnum opus.

Fellow Hawaii resident here on the island of Maui. I've been a longtime fan of Nightwish and I just recently rediscovered the band with Floor so I've been doing the reaction rounds and came upon your channel. Mahalos for everything you're doing with the keiki and your commentary on these reactions are spot on. I am glad to know I'm not the only Nightwish fan out here in the middle of the pacific!

You talk about how they sound cinematic. Imaginaerum is Tuomas' venture into filmography. Well worth the watch.

It's taken me far too long to find this reaction channel. It's not often I find myself watching the reactor more than the video they are reacting to. Your face and the visceral emotion It is showing, is a true joy to behold. Nightwish has always evoked strong feelings in me and I have no musical training at all. To see someone with your history and training show clearly how I feel is well, wonderful. Thankyou for this, you have a new subscriber and I look forward to more of your content.

That moment you experienced at the 8:34 mark: That's it. That is frikkin' it. That is why this band with all those brilliant musicians, crazy genious composer Tuomas and Floor are what makes Nightwish so... so.... damn' - there is no word for it. Epic isn't covering it. And they do this in every song they create. Every song. Every time.

Happy new years! I hope we can make 2021 a better year. Not sure if you're still reading comments from this video, but I really wanted to reply to this specific comment you made: "I try to listen to her voice as part of the complete musical arrangement" Based on this, I really really recommend at some point you go through the latest Nightwish album Human Nature. Tuomas, the writer, has become a lot more experimental with this new album both in the instrumentation and in the vocals (I've heard the metaphor "played like strings" a few times now). It's not quite prog but they definitely broke structure more than usual. Two examples of this are Tribal and Shoemaker Not to mention, the second half of that album is almost purely orchestral! We would LOVE to see you react to that.

I love "Imaginaerum", the album this song comes from. One cool thing about that album is that they had one version of this which is two CD's. The first CD is all the complete songs, and the second CD is all the same songs, but just as instrumentals. Just goes to show that the instrumentals are good enough to stand on their own, and then her vocals just make that instrumental work even better.

From what I understand the opera section used to be pre recorded for live shows with Annette. When Floor joined, she decided to start singing it instead, which I think is waaaay better.
