Unique they were. And really neither shoegaze nor britpop but their own band. Just had the pleasure of seeing Miki here in Belfast, on her book tour. Really interesting and not long enough. It never got past Lush-times! I remember when Scar came out, they were so exciting, we were all entranced by all things 4AD at that point and they were another perfect choice by Ivo. I got to see them in March 1991 at The Old Trout Windsor (supported by the Sandkings I think - remember them?). The only thing I remember about the gig is them walking past us all in th bar with their instruments. I'm so glad they getting their own place in the history of (90s) music now, outside of the standard narrative of Nirvana > Oasis > Blur. This song is impossibly evocative for me, I was 18 when it came out so it must've just hit a nerve because if I hear it at the right moment, it brings a lump into my throat. That sort of lost youth feeling. Uurgh. Isn't music amazing.

@@OlafProt Thank you for sharing your story with me. Yes.. Lush is timeless.. The melodies are cogent. I wish I could have seen them when they briefly reunited. For me, to be shoegaze it needs to breathe a sense of melancholy and nostalgia but still have some form of resolution. Something ethereal, that crossover from youthful plans to old-age wistfulness. 'When the sun hits' by Slowdive is awesome.

2 guitar players, Emma Anderson and Miki Berenyi, Miki was the main singer and Emma provided the harmony vocals. Miki had the fire-engine red hair. Emma usually played a Fender Telecaster a lot of the time and Miki played a 12-String Gibson 335 a lot of the time. I didn't get to see them live until 1996 but it was a great show, a few months prior to the unfortunate tragedy of their drummer taking his own life.

So I checked out all the recommendations here and I’m liking MBV and Slowdive the most. Shoegaze has tons of reverb and the notes almost always ring throughout the songs which creates this ambient atmosphere. It has similarities to dark wave. I feel Slowdive may have inspired The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Silversun Pickups.

This song was written by Emma Anderson (the dark-haired woman). All musical parts and lyrics. Played live during that era it comprised of a 12-string Epiphone or Gibson on rhythm/lead vocals (Miki), a Stratocaster on lead/backing vocals (Emma), bass (Steve), drums (Chris), and various effects pedals on the guitars. Reverb, chorus, some flange or phaser as heard in the outro. Miki wrote some cool songs herself, but Emma's work is generally my favorite. This song, De-Luxe, Desire Lines, Nothing Natural, Monochrome. All masterpieces, she's an extremely talented musician and composer.

Also, shoegaze is EXCELLENT for vocals as an instrument. For a little proto-shoegaze/dreampop that you get vocals as an instrument, check out Cocteau Twins haha!

I have had so many amazing flashbacks of fake memories, situations/places that never actually happened, yet so vivid in my mind, like being at a house party with loud music, people talking, laying under a bed, holding hands with a girl i just met, just embracing sounds and sight, can even remember sensing the scent of the wood of the underside of the bed... Shoegaze just puts me in this imaginary, daydreaming mood like no other:) As many others have said, you have to check out some of these: Slowdive: When the sun hits; Alison (OR ANYTHING from the album "Souvlaki Space Station") My Bloody Valentine: When you sleep, Only shallow (OR ANYTHING from the album "Loveless") Deafheaven: Unrequited (you could even check the live version from Pitchfork festival) Swervedriver: You find it everywhere, Duel, Duress, Last day on earth, Never lose that feeling, Everso (OR ANYTHING from the album "Mezcalhead" or "Rave Down") Cocteau Twins: Pearly dewdrops drops - it's probably more just "dreampop" but who cares...:)

To this day I have such a deep emotional connection to this song, unlike anything else. I would chalk it up to puberty, hormones, nostalgia etc, but very few songs from that same time in my life evoke the same response.

Thanks for you reaction, interesting to get a composer's viewpoint. That mix must be a US single mix or something - it misses out the 'noise' break before the solo and the end is shorter than the UK version that I'm used to. And yes, there are two guitarists in the band, Miki the singer plays a 12 string.

Some other bands and good songs to react to: Cocteau Twins (Proto-Shoegaze / Dream-pop, they helped lay down the foundations for the genre) - "Carolyn's Fingers", "Aikea Guinea", "Iceblink Luck" My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow, To Here Knows When, Soon Slowdive - 40 Days, Allison Ride - Vapour Trail, Taste, Seagull, Leave Them All Behind

'Like staring into a lava lamp', yeah that's pretty much what shoegaze is about. The genre got its nickname from a music journalist describing how the band looked like they were staring at their feet all the time, mainly because the guitarists were using so many effects pedals they were looking at them more than the audience. To me, shoegaze is about ethereal and fuzzy guitars and bass. Silversun Pickups is a great shoegaze band, tons of heavy distorted bass and bright guitars, Rusted Wheel, Well Thought Out Twinkles, and Melatonin are some great tracks by them. Another band that's got some shoegaze influences I'd say to check out is Scarling, their songs Crispin Glover, Alexander the Burn Victim, and Band Aid Covers the Bullet Hole are great to dip your toes into.

Very cool to see shoegaze covered in this channel...(note that Shoegaze & Noisy Pop & New wave are often mixed or quite close in style). I like LUSH but as many shoegaze bands the debt sound wise they owe to COCTEAU TWINS (which is an interesting band imho, way beyond one of their styles which is shoegaze, while they started as a Cold Wave band, btw...) is immense. MY BLOODY VALENTINE is something you should react to, especially their use of dissonance, but also RIDE, SLOWDIVE, CATHERINE WHEEL, THE SUNDAYS and many others...Cheers ! PS: One very special band (alas disbanded since the suicide of the guitarist/signer/leader) is THE ANGELIC PROCESS, mixing shoegaze, drone, progressive metal, ambient, industrial & God knows what else...check out the song : 'The Promises of Snakes

Definitely a very popular genre with the kids today. It's kind of the go-to genre for bands to blend with in order to try something new. Just an observation (so tell me if im wrong), but the resurgence of the genre started to come about around 2006-2009. It was bubbling up in the underground scenes for a few years, but a band called Deerhunter shined a new light on it. Would love to hear you decompose one of their tracks called "Cryptograms".

I love Lush. One of my favorite 90s bands. They came back and put out an EP about 6 years ago, before Miki moved on to Piroshka. But you need to do My Bloody Valentine .. Loveless or the less talked about 2013 release MBV, another long delayed (22 years!) follow up. (Check out track "Only Tomorrow") ... Or Slowdive who did the same thing, following up Souvlaki Space Station with their eponymous album a couple years ago, which was absolutely amazing (I think it's the best thing they've ever done: Slomo - especially the KEXP live version, No Longer Making Time (World Cafe performance), Sugar for the Pill, Star Roving... what a great album).

Shoegaze is a wonderful genre! As you said the genre is very diverse, Lush and Slowdive are somehow at the "mellow" edge of the style, with very atmospheric arrangements, while bands like My Bloody Valentine or Ride are usually more hard-rocking (kind of distortion and reverb all the way together ;)). Sometimes people distinguish between dream pop and shoegaze, I always thought that the mellow side of it is more dream pop and shoegaze is the harder version, but the boundaries are veeeery blurred. The genre had its greatest moment in the '90s, but it is somehow alive and well today. Maybe in its pure form it is rare, but it is omnipresent in many mixed genre (metal and shoegaze, punk and shoegaze, grunge and shoegaze and even techno and shoegaze in the case of Kelly Lee Owens). Hope this helps. I recommend Kely Lee Owens ;)

Gotta check out Ride. Not just the shoegaze, but their journey through sounds and styles with each album, and absolute mastery of all of them. Charlatans "Then" & Primal Scream trip inside this house are 2 more I'd suggest. Man that was such a great creative few years for British music... How about some Stereolab too?
