Keystone RV Master Technicians, Matt and Bart demonstrate how RV owners can replace the water pump as a do-it-yourself project.
Before removing the water pump, it is important to verify that it needs replaced. Here are a few basic items to determine if the water pump is bad. For the water pump to function, the battery must be properly charged, there must be water in the fresh water tank and the city water hose disconnected, the pump switch (at monitor panel) must be on and a faucet must be turned on to put a demand on the system. If all of this is in order, you should hear the pump running and water should be coming out of the faucet. If this is not happening, we recommend checking the fuse in the distribution panel and if good, the pump is likely bad.
Water pumps are usually located close to the convenience center where your water hookups are located and will require removing an access panel inside the unit, or in the pass thru storage near the front. Use a Multimeter to verify there is 12 Volts to the water pump before proceeding with replacement.
Steps to remove the existing water pump:
1. Turn off the pump switch
2. Turn on the water heater bypass
3. Remove the city water connection and drain the pressure from the lines by opening and closing any cold water faucet or maybe 2.
4. Open the low point drains to get as much water out of the lines possible to avoid a mess inside when you disconnect the water lines from the pump. NOTE: If your Fresh Tank is above or on the same level of the water pump-drain the Fresh Tank prior to disconnecting water lines from the pump. If this step is skipped, water damage may occur.
5. Remove the screws holding the pump to the floor. Removing the screws now will make it easier to work on. Set them aside as we will reuse them later.
6. Using wire cutters, cut the bell cap connectors and prep the wires for the new pump, strip ½” back.
7. Unscrew the connections from the pump. (Water will still be in the hoses and pump-have towels handy).You may need some plyers to loosen these up. Once the lines are loose visually check the O-rings. First-verify they are still there and two-they are not damaged and reusable. If not you’ll need to purchase locally before reassembling.
Steps to reassemble with new water pump:
1. You may notice a strainer on the inlet side of the pump that helps keep debris out of the pump. If the new pump does not include this strainer you can the reuse strainer on the new pump. Note: not all pumps contain a strainer, it is just an added feature you may choose for your family. If yours has one, simply unthread and thread onto the new pump and it is ready to install.
2. Secure new pump to the floor and hand-tighten the water lines ¼ to1/2 turn past tight.
Strip the wire sheathing approximately ½” Reconnect the positive and negative wires to the new pump using bell caps. NOTE: It is important to clean and dry the area and water line fittings of any moisture before this next step.
3. Close the low point drains.
4. Add water to the fresh tank
5. Turn the water heater bypass off
6. Turn the water pump switch on
7. Open a faucet and check for leaks at both water line fittings. Use shop towels or some paper towel and even your fingers to check for leaks at the fittings.
8. Close the faucet, the pump should reach pressure and turn off.
9. Check for leaks again at both water line fittings. If there are no leaks, re-install the access panel and your good to go.

Thanks for the thorough video! One thing i noticed while doing this myself is that our trailer doesnt have a hot water bypass switch. In case anyone else runs into that hopefully this saves you some confusion! I was also able to make things easier for myself, since the area i was working in was so tight, by clipping the wires close to he pump instead of at the connection point. It gave me a good 6" more to work with. Maybe not ideal to have an extra connection point, but in my case worth it.

Good morning! This is an indication that the check valve could be bad and the water pump itself would need replaced in that instance. Any dealership can look into this further for you. Thank you!

On the new pump you bought, it has an outlet and inlet that have blue clips on them. Are those clips made to release the inlet and outlet tubes?

Good afternoon! I have not heard of this specific issue. If switching out the pump itself does not resolve this we definitely recommend having a dealership look at this further for you. Thank you!

How about the pump location on a 2021 Carbon 418? The pump is considerably noisy and I’d like to replace it with a quieter one.

I can't find any leaks anywhere but my pump turns on every 45 minutes for a second. Could it be debris in the diaphragm? One more question will there be an instance where you would need to prime the new pump after installation?
@KeystoneRVCompany
@KeystoneRVCompany 3 ай бұрын
Good Morning, Yes you should always prime your new pump after installing this. Also, it could be an issue with the pump itself. We would recommend that you inspect the pump further or have a local dealer assist to find the root cause of this turning on that often.

Is there anything additional that needs to be done to make sure there is no power to the pump before you mess with the wires?
@KeystoneRVCompany
@KeystoneRVCompany Жыл бұрын
Good Morning! You will want to make sure the switch to the pump is turned off so that no power is going to those wires. You also can turn off the power to the unit completly as well if you are still feeling unsure after turning off the switch. Thank you

Used Keystone Challenger 2008 waterpump. Stationary with city water. Haven't used, noticed a leak think in front where wires are. Should i repair, what the issue could be. Or can I disconnect altogether or etc. Thanks female learning

Good Morning! We would recommend first trying to find the source of the leak. If it is coming from the roofing we would recommend checking all seals up there as they need to be maintained every 90 days. If it is not coming from the roofing then there could be something loose near the wiring allowing water to come through. If you cannot stop the leak on your own we could recommend having a local Keystone dealer or repair facility assist with this. Thank you!
