Your drilling skills are superb. 0:44 I used a milling machine to drill holes one day just to be lazy, but all the holes were misaligned, and the offset and direction were inconsistent. After many tests I found out that my feed rate was incorrect and that there was still a chance to correct the bit before the taper angle was fully in the surface of the object.

Great build and fun to watch. Been a machinist for over 25 years and have done this numerous times. Can be very tiring on the lathe for sure. Only thing I would recommend if anything would be slowing your reamers down quite a bit. Would give a lot better finish and last a lot longer. I know your machine aren't the type with lots of bottom end torque, but about 50% of drill speed is rule of thumb. Anyhow, great tool and great videos. Thanks for sharing!

I'd say that works really well! My only concern with one sided cutting tools on a lathe, especially a small one (similarly with the push style knurling wheels) is the high side load on spindle bearings. I was also unsure on the grub screw, I'm pretty sure a smaller grub on the side of the shank should hold well enough if you can find a way to register the tool on the rear of your slot, shouldn't be difficult with a tapered tool. Why does technical speak always sound so smutty!

Nice work at the keyway tool, but the grub screw to hold the cutting insert look like a weak a point. Drill a hole and use pin mill to make slot in the cutting tool holder to insert the cutting tool and the grub screw has the whole around to hold the cutting tool firmly secured without expanding the cutting tool holder.
@WeCanDoThatBetter

Hi and thanks for your comment! Yes, that is definitely the weak spot. For other keyway cutters I have to make a few more holders in the future. I will try to make them different so that the grub screw can not bend the part.

@@WeCanDoThatBetter You can use HSS round solid shaft instead HSS square or rectangel bar and drill hole to example 5 mm hole for 5 mm HSS round solid shaft instead make slotted hole and screw firmly with grub screw. Select the diameter as you desire and grind to the desired width adapted for the keyway. It take less work to make new tool with hole instead slotted hole. Why bore backwards, with the work on the tool post and the tool on the spindle?? I imagine there’s a reason I’d never seen that technique on a lathe before.
@WeCanDoThatBetter
@WeCanDoThatBetter 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. That bore in the brass bushing had to be very accurate. With the cutting tool spinning in the lathes spindle I ensured, that the bore has the exact same diameter throughout the whole length and is parallel to the aluminium body and also on exact centerheight when I later use the keyway cutting tool. If I had done it the traditional way with boring bar in the toolpost and part in the lathe chuck, the bore might have turned out slightly conical and less accurate cause small misalignments in the lathes ways or spindlestock will get relevant. Hope, that is somehow understandable:)

Hi and thanks for your comment. I will use oil for lubrication not grease. There are oilpumps for the fitting I used here. I didn't make it that clear in the video: The oilgroove is on the outside of the brass bushing so that the oil filled in can flow on the outside of the bushing around and enter on two points through little holes into the bushing and lubricate the plunger. I made these two holes off camera. But oilgrooves inside the bushings were also good, I will add them.
