J. Krishnamurti - Ojai 1983 - Conversation with Jonas Salk - What makes us change?
Summary:
If one has children, will they repeat the same old pattern or will there be a fundamental change in their whole consciousness?
What makes us learn, change?
Is time an enemy or a help?
You are responsible as a human being for the rest of humanity.
Consciousness is not mine, it is the human mind. We are humanity.
The mind that is trained to resolve problems will always find problems. If the brain is not trained to solve problems, it can face problems but is essentially free.
Why should I psychologically record anything?
Identification is a form of self-centred activity.
Compassion cannot be put together by thought.

This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

K. at 88 years of age here is still extremely sharp mentally. In fact, he remained sharp till his death 3 years later. He freed himself from the inner conflict which excelerates senility, freed himself many decades earlier. No sign of senility even in his last public speech.

To die to everything we have been attached to. Even the self. It sure was entertaining so the self says to me. Really are you telling me that I'm thinking too much. That I don't need to think at all in the human realm, interactions where I thought that I needed the self present? It was wrong to think that or to think at all. I find this, whatever it is, it's human, whatever it is, it doesn't need to remember itself. To so-called personality or any of it. All false. Truly it knew it was playing a game. For it would sleep to dream. This action reflects a lack. Does it not?For it never existed. It couldn't. The self finds this sad. Doesn't it? That tightness? It is the self. Conflicting. All the time.

No, not at all. Then everyone merely follows, conforms, imitates K. The very thing K abhorred vehemently. And the real fragrance, the timeless beauty goes out of the window. Instead of all this, if one actually delves deep into the teachings so as to be completely free from the 'me', the ego, the self --- this very freedom will act as a catalyst on the rest of the world. One has to begin with oneself and the first step is the last step. Propaganda has no place whatsoever in this.

I share your enthusiasm- believe me. However what JK is saying... Be the light - first to yourself. Then light emanates outward toward others like a sun. It is still up to the individual - whether to take advantage of this light or sit in the shadow.

I find it happen often. No insight into what he was pointing to. But dare we get upset? Aren't we them? We are so how can one be upset? We are upset. The insight is there. We aren't. We were never there. We created the nonthere. We are there. We are not here. But how? One ask. How to get there? One answers never. You must end. Then the question again. How must one? We made knowledge important. Most important. It keeps going. One saw it happen. I determined it. That thinking, so much thinking was wrong. I delved in. I coveted knowledge. Gulped it up. Did you? You saw it happen. When knowledge, experience, personality became God.

14:35 Dr. Salk misses the main point here, that a group identifying itself as "the exceptions" or the "more evolved" creates another tribal split from mankind and further perpetuates division. Krishnamurti was right to retort that this is an age old excuse of the politician and priest. Krishnamurti clarifies this even more explicitly at 52:59 and his reply to 58:40. Overall, it seems Salk "agreed" throughout the entire discussion to avoid introspection about his clear sense of entitlement as one of an "exceptional, evolved" class.

The level of ignorance and superstition displayed by both is quite telling. Maybe it's understandable considering they just lived through the 1970s. I noticed Salk is among the first to talk of "the planet", instead of "the World", or "Earth" as with proper English.

K.'s entire point ist hat every human being has this potential, elitst thinking is divisive and historically it has brought about some of the most appalling atrocities, the supremacist ideologies, racism, fascism, they are all elitist.

Salik just isn't listening to what K was saying here. His mind is just constantly trying to find out how to change the world and keeps asking questions about that, instead of listening to K who is talking solely about actually confronting ones own self right now and seeing what's true. That's the only thing to do, because it's an impossible fantasy to try to change others and the world. You don't see the truth of yourself in order to then try and change the world and change others, you do it purely because it's the right thing to do - because you care about what's real and not all your petty egotistical desires, whether those desires are for money, power, status, possessions or the desires for "enlightenment" and wanting to feel better than others merely in a "spiritual" way, or the desire for belief and ideas, of heavens and reincarnation or whatever else. All of it is conditioned egotism, however subtle and clever the mind gets with games of "spirituality" or religion or any other kind of subtle one-upmanship.

How can you bring about a lasting change in that which changes every moment? That which I identify as me is never the same, changing all the time. Being aware of one's identification appears to be the key. Stop the identification and this problem is seen for what it is -- non-existent. What we experience can only be the other.

May 27, 2021 - We still live in a world where humans kill themselves, kill other humans, needlessly kill nonhumans, and destroy the planet in the name of concepts, beliefs, stories, desires, profits (green paper has more value than life - how strange this is). Slaughterhouses. War. Poverty. Hunger. We still, the majority, have not learned a thing, have not seen.

Yes indeed. And in this we only can recognize our own helpless efforts to grasp the truths that K shares ever so patiently with every human being he talks with. It is a pattern that is to be seen in many of these videos. K is in fact not talking to the person in front of him, but to the entire human consciousness that is present at that very place and moment.

Dr. Salk says, "We are taught to hate ... " This means that, myself graduated a public school system in its method of teaching in compare and compete principle, the comparing instinct and hatred is in my bones. We need a different way of teaching and what is taught in public schools which is the norm of all education. K was right that he built 5~6 schools to raise children differently .... But ... how can that cover? It's no wonder humans have become more and more selfish, idiotic, violent

Krishnamurti is actually wrong in that we are getting more violent and wars are getting worse. Historical records show that between the late Middle Ages and the 20th century, European countries saw a 10- to 50-fold decline in their rates of homicide. It is absurd that war still exists but a lot less people die in battle today than 1000 or 500 years ago. Despite that we have more weapons than ever. You can check the research on this by Steven Pinker.

This was during the cold war when tensions were high and I think the main point what he said (that war has been going on for millennia, needs to change) is still absolutely warranted for. Yes perhaps nowadays, with things such as European Union and globalization, all-out war might be less frequent, but there is still a lot of room for improvement, just consider the Middle East Wars right now. There is also the risk of regression through fervent populism nationalism etc.

Who am I? K speaks about starting near. “No one can resolve my problem , I have to do it” Why suffering ? What are my conditionings, my beliefs, the ways I think, the content? How do I look into the question of suffering? Do I belong to a church, country, football team , tribe? The need to belong, how am I catering to it? Why belonging to humanity is not enough? Does it make me feel special to belong to these groups? Am I safe , really safe by belonging to these groups or is it a fantasy? Am I questioning the rules and what I need to do to belong? Do I question the price of belonging to these groups? Are they about love and compassion? Really? Does these belongings provide pleasure and quiet my fears? Am I free? What happens if and when I disagree? The same questions pertain to belonging to a family. Am I willing to see my attachments, clinging, what is the price? Am I aware of how I blindly live my life, what I consume and why? Am I really free? To die to that which we learned, adopted, believed and made us who we think we are, enabled us more or else to function and also caused us suffering. When we see clearly how this paradigm is the cause of all the horror and suffering, clarity happens and life is not the same. Moments of clarity , then confusion then clarity again… Do you want to sit in the sun? If not why? And what is the obstacle? Only we can answer for ourselves.
