Khan academy is awesome. I learn new angles to concepts I know well, which makes it a great review. Like people say, the pause button is tremendously valuable. The idea that you don't have to go to class when you don't feel up to it. Skip around content when reviewing to break up monotony. I'll bet anything math and science achievement goes up in people who use it.

I just discovered this man a week ago, and I might pass Linear Algebra and Stats 2
@Peter_19868 жыл бұрын
+Aldora LaPlume That's great. The most important thing when it comes to math is to learn stuff in he right order, and always make sure that everything is crystal clear. I would say that Arithmetic/Algebra/Geometry, in that order, are probably the fundamental subjects, and this will take you really far.
@Peter_19867 жыл бұрын
***** It's also important to develop a good intuition for things, so that you don't rely too much on formulas. One example is the cosine formula for triangles - it is pretty easy to derive that formula from scratch by splitting an arbitrary triangle into two right triangles, and then comparing their respective sides and angles and finally combining them so that the cosine of one angle only depends on the sides of the original triangle.
@Peter_19867 жыл бұрын
***** Indeed. However, it might sometimes be more practical to start with simply presenting a formula if it has a complicated derivation, so that the students at least can start using it. For example, the area of a circle pretty much requires calculus to be derived properly, since you will have to do something like taking the integral of the areas for an infinite number of rings of greater and greater radius - for example, you could say that one ring has the area 2·π·r·dr and then integrate this from 0 to R, which will result in the area of the circle --- π·R². This would be straightforward if you have some knowledge of integral calculus, but it might be too complicated for people who are just starting out with Geometry and most likely at that point have knowledge of Arithmetic and Algebra, although they could probably understand the general ideas.

So I sucked at math during high school only c+ was my highest grade. Teacher in no easy way said I was hopeless. 14 years later I took maths 2 passed with a- working with my teacher and watching khanacademy videos. 1 year later took calculus 1 passed with a b+ was sick during that course and missed a few classes so mostly khanacademy concepts brought me through that. Now I plan to do physics and more sciences along with calculus 2. I am grateful for Sals dedication as my daughter is now top of her class in math and increasing in other areas redefining her study methods.
@Peter_19869 жыл бұрын
It was probably your teacher who was hopeless, then. Good teachers can teach things to anyone, because they know how to reach out to every student. Some teachers have this annoying attitude that they almost seem upset when a student asks questions that "are obvious", and that's exactly the kind of attitude that intimidates people to ask questions in the first place. If a student is unsure of something, then he or she should always feel comfortable to ask about it, and NEVER feel "hopeless".
@tlove219 жыл бұрын
Agreed I started teaching and saw massive growth in students. I always believed in making classes open for dialogue and laughter. Took an IT class from an average of 20% to an all out class average of 75% in less than a month. I was called in to help them pass their final exams. Teachers need to understand that it not only takes loving your job, it takes loving your students.
@Peter_19869 жыл бұрын
Exactly, and I'm glad to hear that. Actually caring for the students makes an incredible difference, and makes the whole climate much more friendly and welcoming. Of course, the courses should be taken seriously and sometimes need to be formal, since you often need to use formal language to clearly explain how math and science works - but there is nothing that says this should exclude a relaxed teaching style and a sense of humour. One lecturer that I have a lot of respect for is professor Gilbert Strang from MIT, he is a good example of how I think teachers and professors should behave during a lecture.

I'm attending paramedic class at high school in Norway. We dig deep in most topics within anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology. Khan Academy has helped me a lot, because not only does he explain it simple and he starts at a beginners level, he also shows you why and how things work. Reading a text about the hearts electrical system, is barely enough to understand it. Me, and most of my classmates need to SEE how things work, to understand it. It's also a LOT easier to remember if you have a visual memory of a physiological function. Thank you Khan Academy, for making my education a lot easier!

In the Age of Coronavirus...THIS IS A REVOLUTION whose time has come!!! World Class education FOR FREE! Why are hard workers penalized from succeeding (i.e. paying so much in (property) taxes to build buildings that have nothing to do with education) when Khan Academy could be instituted everywhere? Parents...make sure your local school board knows about this; talk to your politicians who champion education. Break the grip that teacher's unions (administrator heavy/salary heavy) and get the teachers on board to push this 21st century form of education to the forefront!

Cooperative learning is very important. I agree with Meagan. Discussion is valuable. Khan is great for a small part of teaching. Not everyone learns the same way.
