Tsem Rinpoche’s dharma teaching was very suitable for modern people. His words are lively and humorous, so can attracted many sentient being engage in dharma. From the video, i know more about khatas and meaning behind it. Offering khatas symbolizes purify, care, devotion, compassion, gratitude and respect. When you offer khatas to someone, you offer the open edges facing the person you are offering, and the folded section will be towards you, which represents you open pure heart, faithful and respect. So, when you offer khatas to someone, its was showing your great respect to them. What i learned from the video was offering khatas to different range people with different ways: 1. When you offer khatas for high lamas, it should be presented with folded hands places near your forehead and bow before them in humble. You will never put khatas over the neck of someone higher. Khatas put back on your neck from high lama is considered a blessing. 2. For people that are lower range or equal range with you, you will put khatas on his hand. 3. For younger generations or subordinates, you can place khatas on their shoulders. 4. Yellow khatas can offer to a wealth deity which represent growth. 5. Red khatas can offer to a protective deity because red means wrathful. Thanks to Tsem Rinpoche for the clearly explanation.

One friend of mine took me to meet the 104th Ganden Tripa in an unexpected event. We were late while we arrived; we saw the holiness walked toward us like rush off to leave. My friend immediately gave his Khata to me and asked me to go to his holiness. “It would be really blessed! Quick, go ahead!” he said. I was hesitating to move forward because I’m not familiar with this custom. Also his holiness was surrounded by few bodyguards, I feel weak to approach. I took two steps forward, then one step backward, again and again, with holding the Khata on my palms. Three of my friends stood behind me. The holiness and his assistant saw us, they actually passed before my eyes but suddenly, they stopped and talked a bit to each other. The assistant came to me and get my Khata to the holiness; quickly I move forward to the holiness and he put the Khata around my neck. A sense of blesses rise in my heart. The holiness left and I looked at my friends, they were smiling at me. That was how I got my first Khata. Now when I look back, I found myself have no idea about Khata at that time. I did not know Khata can have such deep meaning. I feel like it’s not easy for us to express our feelings and emotions to the others sometimes. We are human, we actually need each other and we all need that care. People need to show that they care, and Khata is one of the ways to show it. I love when Rinpoche describes Khata as “Emotions on the cotton.”, so beautiful. It shows love, care, concern… all these are things that a human heart longing to.

Hi DrolmaGirl, I still remember when i was younger, I always think that it was so cool to have a white scaft (khata) around the neck. I didnt know that a simple khata mean so much. I think Rinpoche really take good care of hit students as well cause he stop the teachings asking his students if they need tables and stuffs.

I have learnt from one of the recent Rinpoches talk in Eric Choong's book launch that there are some certain protocols that we would have to follow when offering khata.
