What an encore! Liebestraum No. 3 by Franz Liszt, played by Khatia Buniatishvili at the 2011 Verbier Festival.
The ‘Dream of Love’ that is Liebestraum No. 3 in A-flat major is not only the most recognizable work for solo piano by Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886), it’s also one of the most famous piano pieces of all time. Liszt published it in 1850, alongside two more such ‘love dreams’ (S. 541).
The basis for Liebestraum No. 3 was the earlier Lied ‘O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst’ (S. 298), which Liszt composed for solo voice and piano accompaniment in 1845. For the lyrics, Liszt reappropriated the first four verses from the poem of the same name, by Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810-1876). The Lied dealt with reminiscing over a lost love - and the too-late realization of not having that love lived to its fullest.
Liebestraum No. 3 for piano is a mood piece, in which the opening melody of the song becomes the main theme, repeated through multiple variations. The Liebestraum carries a characteristic atmosphere of melancholy. Khatia Buniatishvili is enraptured as she plays, as if she were alone with Liebestraum No. 3 in the concert hall - a most romantic work for piano in an interpretation that none could fail to be drawn into.
Pianist Khatia Buniatishvili, born in 1987 in Tbilisi/Georgia, was considered a wunderkind as a child. She began playing piano at the age of three, giving her first concert with the Tbilisi Concert Orchestra at age six. International performances followed from the age of ten. In 2008, she had her US debut in New York's Carnegie Hall. Since then, Buniatishvili has been a regularly invite at many high-profile festivals, and has performed concerts in the world's most renowned concert halls, including Vienna's Musikverein, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Berlin Philharmonic. She has twice received the highly respected Echo Classic Award.
The Verbier Festival is one of the world’s most prestigious classical music events. The quality of participating artists - coupled with the originality of the programs - has established the festival as a highlight of the musical calendar. It is held for two weeks - from late July to early August - in the mountain resort of Verbier, Switzerland.

It's beautiful, but I'm my head I always had the ideia of the first part being when you are going to rest, and start thinking about your life, the first cadenxa for me is like when you are falling asleep and entering a dream, then the climax of the piece is also the climax of the dream, while the second cadenza is when you wake up from your dream and slowly get up (just my opinion) that's the only reasonn I would do that pianissimo there

That's the mark of a true artist--the willingness to surrender one's will to the music itself. To be gifted' in my opinion, is about making a gift, a portal of oneself TO a moment of truth/beauty seeking expression in the world. Khatia knows intuitively how to serve as a conduit through which the music--translated into notes--flows to our ears.

@@damienenrightofficial International Association of Theatre Critics (Hong Kong) 31.03.2016 ..... One may say that it is important for musicians to have a unique musical style and personality, but is it even acceptable to interpret the pieces like what Buniatishvili did? Buniatishvili is intoxicated by being virtuosic and often forgets what is behind the music. One should have faith in his or her own interpretation, but he or she should also re-think whether he or she is doing justice to the music or not. In addition, technique is much more than playing the notes accurately and rapidly. Technique refers to the total mastery of the keyboard. Yet, at times Buniatishvili’s playing lost control, no matter use of pedal, or tone production. Virtuosity does not necessarily mean speed and volume. In order to become a mature artist with individuality, Buniatishvili has to reflect on her musical approach and attitude towards music making.

Die Kritik. ...

"... Speaking of flair, Buniatishvili emerged from the wings in a shiny silver dress, which said “Vegas.” The woman behind me remarked to the man she was with, “You don’t need to hear the music”-in other words, looking was enough. ... But, again, she was extreme. She slapped at the keyboard vulgarly. At one point, she stood up, the better to pound the keyboard. Her playing hurt my ears, ... And she seemed to play heedless of the public, heedless of pianistic norms, heedless of anything. I thought, “She’s in her own private Idaho.” ... Afterward, audience members went to the front of the hall, to take her picture. She beamed. She will obviously be a “star,” and is probably one already: the dress, the lionessness, the loudness. I imagine she’ll be known as “Khatia,” with the “Buniatishvili” on the sidelines."... THE NEW CRITERION by Jay Nordlinger, New York City " If our end-of-year lists included not only the 10 best performances but also the 10 worst, the recital presented Tuesday night by pianist Khatia Buniatishvili might be hard to dethrone from the latter list’s first place. ... "But Buniatishvili, who performed in a glittery, bright-red dress, was all about self-indulgence. Sometimes grotesquely distorted, this was music reflected in the aural equivalent of funhouse mirrors. One could only guess that the standing ovations, whoops and bravas came from people not well acquainted with the pieces." ..." Or maybe this is just how she plays. I shall not be keen to hear her again. ..." ... THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS Scott Cantell ..."No matter how fast she plays, no matter what the character of the music, everything comes across the same way - the pianistic equivalent of a society wedding photograph, with edges blurred and defining human characteristics removed. ... Buniatishvili is neither careless nor ungifted. She is simply overhyped, immature and preoccupied with beauty of presentation - a poor example to the legions of young pianists who aspire to her fame and fortune. At no point did this recital reveal a shred of the musical temperament we expect of a scion of Georgian musical tradition." ... THE FINANCIAL TIMES Ltd 2014 06.06.2014 THE GUARDIAN classical music Wigmore Hall, London Andrew Clements Thursday 2 April 2015 12.28 BST ...The good news is that the piano survived it all intact; the bad is that on the question of whether Buniatishvili can ever be a serious artist, the jury is very much still out.

@@sagemaster3408 It is probably a good sign that some who think are experts of interpretation are angry when they see and hear Buniatishvili. I have listened to and played classical music from my younger years on, and I like the way she plays. But I guess in the eyes of an "expert" that does not qualify me in any sense. In no other musical genre (than classical) I have come across such critical arrogance and narrow- minded-ness (in terms of what is "right", "wrong", ok and not ok) - which is why I turned away from the classical world quite a while ago.

Hard to reach, even harder to teach. Look at her face when she plays a piece; Khatia feels every note, even the 'notes' (energy) between the notes, the silences. She reaches for and translates the inner truth of a piece. Technical prowess alone is for robots; audiences may be impressed but never moved by a performance that doesn't stir their own emotions. If you haven't seen it, watch the movie Black Swan, with Mila Kunis & Natalie Portman. About ballerinas, not musicians. One scene in particular is relevant to all true artists--the teacher criticizes Kunis' character for failing to lose herself in the dance; she never lets go, never surrenders to forces that want to express themselves through her technically perfect movements. Understand? "Technique is what you fall back on when you run out of inspiration." ~Rudolf Nureyev

I like the arrangement of notes you play it so beautifully. One of the most technical versions to play but you make it so effortless. I listened many times and appreciate this as 1 of your masterpieces.
