Here's a detailed look of what's under the hood and underneath the all new Kia Forte! In this video, we check out the 2019 Kia Forte from a purely mechanical perspective, taking a detailed look under the hood and underneath the vehicle!
Skip to section:
0:00 Introduction
0:15: Engine
1:12: Air intake
2:45: Timing Chain
3:36: ECU and Battery
3:50: Cooling System
5:46: Exhaust

6:23: Underbody
7:32: Transmission
8:45: Suspension
10:26: Brakes
11:12: Steering
11:31: Quality Analysis
The Forte is Kia's entry into the subcompact market to compete against the Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, Ford Focus (dead), Chevrolet Cruze (dead), Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3. This Kia is identical mechanically to the Kia Soul which is new for 2020. Some of the notable features are:
2.0L NU Hyundai/Kia inline 4 cylinder engine
Kia's first continuously variable transmission (IVT)
Port Injection only
Integrated oil/pump in the timing cover
Variable intake manifold and charge motion sensor
Electronic thermostat
Rear torsion beam suspension
Overall the Kia Forte is a decent entry mechanically speaking, with good build quality for the price of the vehicle. Notably the layout of everything underneath the hood is identical to Toyota products.

I think these mechanical reviews are awesome. My car got in a front-end collision, so I appreciate how you evaluate the design from that perspective. As a mechanic, you probably see a lot of front-end damage. The insurance company said that my car was a total loss (it's old), but I got it repaired.

I love our current Kia Sedona. We bought it as a temporary solution after our 2016 Escape was totaled after hitting a Moose. It has been super reliable considering the steep hillsides and mountain passes we have driven it through here in Alaska. The previous owner drove it up the Alcan and had a hard life - still does, maybe moreso. We decided to keep it and has been going strong for 2 years now with just basic maintenance. I would totally buy a new Hyundai/Kia product.

Remove the alternator & the water pump takes 15min to replace. I love that Hyundai does not extend the subframe; if you have to remove or replace the gearbox/transmission you don't have to suspend the engine and lower the subframe first. It's a 3 hour job, literally. Love your reviews! 👍!👍!👍!

I have this same engine in my Hyundai Elantra se. 2018 with the manual transmission. I really like the car. I have 53k on it. Change the synthetic oil every 4k. Trying hard to go to 5k but I'm old school. The motor sounds like it did when it was new. Its quiet. I get over 40mpg and haven't had any problems. Although I had it in for an oil change and they had to update the software on the thermostat. When its bitterly cold out it took like 20 minutes to get to normal temp. Now it takes 3 minutes. It's been a good car. I plan on driving it for another 200k.

Hi speedkar99. I'm so glad to find your channel showing the intricacies of the vehicle. My daughter is shopping for her 1st car and we are seriously considering this car based on the price value and also the fact that the motor has a timing chain rather than a timing belt. I am a bit taken back with the fact that pretty much all manufacturers are going the way of the CVT which to me has been a headache and very problematic. (Nissan cough...) I looked over the new corollas and was shocked that Toyota too has changed over to CVT, sheesh. So now we are not sure which way to go. Choose the normal 2.0 with a timing belt but a CVT trans or go a little more with the GT with a 1.6 turbo (No knowledge of the motor) but with a proper dual clutch. If you can somehow shed some light on this it would be much appreciated. Also you've got a new subscriber!!!

the twist beam set up is what everybody in the compact car segment is doing so it doesn't even matter to me and it won't to most people. There's an independent suspension set up on the Forte GT that just came out. It's the same strategy that Hyundai has been using on the Elantra Sport (makes sense since it's the same platform). Hopefully you can get a next gen Sonata at some point so you can show us what's better or worse with the next gen platform they just debuted in that car. There's a new 2.5L engine with dual port injection and 1.6T with this thing called CVVD which is supposedly just a combo of VVT, VVL, and the ability to change the duration of the valve being opened or closed using an electric motor (hopefully that won't kill their reliability).

Wow you are definitely a Hyundai fan haha. Competitors like the Civic and Corolla offer independent rear suspensions on the base model. I didn't know the Forte GT had IRS, I knew the Elantra Sport did. Makes sense though since there's alot of space under that floor pan. I wonder if it'll swap over ... Yeah it'll take some time for the 2020 Sonata to start appearing around, I'd love to review it along with the paliside/ telluride.

speedkar99 I drive a Kia and my family has driven Hyundai in the past and they’ve been extremely solid for us so I like learning as much about them as possible. Yeah the Corolla and Civic definitely gets a thumbs up by not going for a twist beam. The Mazda3, Sentra, and the Jetta unfortunately have succumbed to that trend. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone tried to swap suspensions.

my 2010 forte 2.4 6MT just broke 200,000 km's and i love this car to bits, it's got the older style THETA2 but in the first iteration where they used MPI and were still made in korea, the later GDI theta2 was made in i believe georgia or Alabama and they had production line defects where sand from the block casting + filings from machining weren't flushed out properly and sat dormant in the oil journals, man did hyundai ever make the walk of shame after that with the exploding engine recalls haha! ive seen a good few 2.4 MPI fortes make it to 400,000kms and i plan to take mine that far and beyond! 173HP and 168 ftlbs of midrange torque move pretty damn quick haha, people turbo the first generation forte and make an even 300hp/300tq and have little reliability issues long term :)

I really like the new forte a lot. I'm considering it to be my next car. However, the only thing that puts me off is the positioning of the turn signal and reverse lights being on the bottom instead of where its supposed to be. Like you said, one little bump could break it and cause fluid to come out. Kia should put the lights where they're supposed to be. If they did that and put a break hold feature like the Corolla and the civic, it would be very hard to pass it up. I hope kia sees this.

How does the cooling system on Mercedes and BMW keep the coolant from boiling if the radiator doesn't have a cap and the coolant is free to flow back and forth to the reservoir, which has some empty space that can allow the coolant to expand and boil?
