Week 1: For this Video, we will be covering the cleanup and preparation of the gardening site, as well as "seasoning" the soil with nutrients in preparation for this year's planting. Wow done this myself this year before I saw your video I done the same thing, I had 4 pools I bought from Walmart , planted Corn, Tomatoes Peppers and I had the best garden I ever planted! Going to do the same in 2024 Love your video II will be 60 years old soon and this is very easy to do at my age . I used to till up the ground in my younger days and plant these crops, But making my own soil this year and using the kiddie pool system gave me the best results ever I had to give away a lot of Tomatoes and peppers this year. Again I love your video! Keep on posting new vids

Loved the video, love the way you think! This is perfect for people who have back issues or cant knee or squat, they could lift the bag to a wheel barrel or table work the garden and them put it back.

This is brilliant! I love the idea of the kiddie pools and Walmart bags! My hubby does square foot gardening which works well but I might have to have my own garden this year and try this! I am so intrigued! The watering system sounds awesome too!

I have been doing this for over 20 tears. It started when I bought shrubs and had nowhere to put them and they kept drying out. I drilled overflow holes. Then I realized I could use these for the abundance of salad green and or kale that I need. I works great but I mostly put in Perpetual spinach that overwinters and comes back every years. This saves time and energy. This is a very nice video just shows 2 different to utilize Kiddie poosl of all things. Thanks for another perspective.

Thanks for making this series! I did this last year, too, but without the self irrigation! Worked great. However, because there were no completely level spots in my yard, each of my pools had "deep ends" so some bags got flooded while others barely got enough water. I fixed that by putting pea gravel in the bottom of the pools and leveling it before putting the grow bags on. Then, to prevent mosquitos from breeding in the standing water, I filled in the space between the grow bags with about 2" of pea gravel. I then drilled my overflow holes just below the top of the gravel.

This is how I had my garden when I lived in MO!! It’s a great way to have a garden!! The only issue I had was all the mosquito it attracted. If you have any tips for that I will replant a garden this year!! Oh and if you put some fish fertilizer in the water once a week or every other week, your plants will grow like crazy!!! It stinks but works wonderful!!

What I would suggest is to watch those water levels in the pools. Sitting water is a magnet!

@Krista Dobbins - for mosquitoes - Mosquito Bits or Mosquito Dunks! You can usually find them at nurseries, TSC, feed/seed stores, Walmart, and of course, Amazon! I’ve been using them for years, so I can highly recommend either product.

We are prepping to do this this spring! For mosquitos, I am using Larry Hall’s idea of using a float valve in the pool to regulate the water level. The float will be inside a plastic box with holes to allow the water level in, then fill the rest of the pool with pea gravel to control mosquitos and algae. The float box keeps the gravel out but allows the water to circulate to the plants while also using up space so that less water is actually needed to maintain the pool level. Very excited to see the results!

This is my third year using kiddie pool planters..just want to mention they are so brittle by now I'm sure this will be the last year..but they have worked excellent for the price..the only thing cheaper is to actually use the plastic bags the soil comes in...just lay the bag of soil on the ground and cut out a rectangle and insert seeds..I want to mention the bags have lasted better than the pool..lol..I'm going to refill my old bags the year! I do plant directly into my pools..and I use a shower chair to work my garden because I have back problems...and 71 yrs old...also planting anything on a vine use string from each plant going to a stick of some kind in the middle..like a circus tent...

Hi. Thank you so much for this video series, you've no idea how much this is helping me to set up my garden in 2022. I was wondering about some sizes. Are your pools the 3 or 5 foot ones? Also, I can't find the walmart bags (ikr!) I've no idea how big they are. I do have some regular size Aldi bags, but not sure is the size is comparable to the walmart bags, I want to grow the patio tomatos and the yellow cherry. I also have some never used sand bags that I believe would be 3 gal. They are much taller but I was told to roll them down. I'm sure I can plant pepper plants and potatos, but not tomatoes. Thanks for your help.

Adding each plant to a bag allows better portability just in case they need to be moved, and uses less soil.

Very neat idea. I have a question, how do you keep your tomato plants from falling over? When I plant mine in ground they get 6 feet tall. I have to stake them. Do you do that on outside of the pool?

I add a cage to each bag, and then zip tie all of the cages together.

I’m assuming before you put soil in the bag you remove any bottom insert the bag has. Our Walmart didn’t have those bags anymore. The ones I bought have a removable bottom. Thanks for your videos. I’m going to try this.

My bags do not have an insert . These are the fabric style bags, not the freezer to plastic coated bag with bottom insert. :)

Without seeing them, it's hard to tell. They need to have the fabric type texture, similar to landscaping fabric. Many stores sell these as well, including dollar stores, so you could give them a try as well.

Great job on the video. So I need to get a 1 inch drill bit? t seems that each pool has lots of holes or is it one drain hole per pool?

The pools have holes all the way around about 1.5 inches from the bottom. This way the pool never fills up when it rains. In case of times when there is rain several days in a row, not giving time for the plants to absorb the water, I drilled one hole at the ground level for a "quick drain" that I keep plugged with a rubber stopper until needed. I used a Spade drill bit for the holes, but you can use any size or style bit that will penetrate the pool.

I love this idea but I am curious as to the safety (chemical wise) of the blue reusable bags. I am concerned that the dye and other products used in the bags are food safe.

So I'm doing a kiddie pool garden! Thank you for the idea btw! But I was wondering why you have to put the plants in bags? Maybe I missed it in the video I apologize if you went over that. I'm starting from seeds which I know it's late but I haven't gone out bc of the virus and was only able to get seeds through the mail. Can you start the seeds in small containers and then transplant to the pool?

I choose the Kiddie pool bag method for ease of watering, use less soil and portability 🙂. It's over all neater and practically weed free! You can absolutely start your seeds in containers and transfer to the pool. I have planted bean seeds directly in the pool bags and they have done well too! Mske sure you check out week 4, as I have included a q&a that may be helpful.

Hi there! No, I have not grown potatoes in the bags yet! I have grown them in large pots though and they have done great!

You never ever use any kind of pesticide or weed killer near your garden where you’re consuming the food. Most people don’t know but what we call ‘weeds’ in our yard are actually very nutritious edibles. They provide a lot of ground cover under your plants which in turn retains moisture and some of them even give nutrients to the vegetables you’re growing around them. And even if you did not want the weeds in your yard you can pull them and put them in a compost bin but you never ever use pesticides or weed killer near any plants that you plan on consuming! Other than that very good video😃

Ot depends on the plants needs and the weather /temperature. Here in SC, I add 1" water twice a week early spring, and up to twice a day in mid summer!
