My younger sister has become super toxic and has a huge victim complex because she had full access to the internet with little to no restrictions, now it’s gotten to the point that she’s impossible to live with. She argues over everything and treats everything like a horrendous task. I’m autistic, and she blames a lot of stuff she does on my “stupid autism” For example; I tell her to put or leave our cat alone because she never leaves him alone. She yells or screams at me, either my name like “Kodaaaaaa!’ With a huffy face, or she’ll yell at me to “stop butting your nose in” If I tell her to stop doing something she acts like I just told her to stop breathing or something. She escalates arguments so much, to the point that my parents don’t trust her enough to leave her home alone with me and my older sister (19) because she causes so many problems, she’s gotten way worse once she joined secondary school and she excused her behaviour by saying “I’m almost a teenager now” because teenagers are notoriously moody, but not like this?? We were walking to school one day and I was waiting to cross the road- she walked out in the middle of the road in front of an incoming car, so I yelled and told her to move back, she did but then started an argument with me saying it was my fault she almost got ran over- it was so ridiculous I was actually baffled at how she came up with that. She said it was because I was autistic and she thought I couldn’t cross the road despite me doing it for almost 5 years now- she infantilises me because of my autism and said countless times that she was basically an older sister because I was autistic- she’s 12, I’m 15. I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself and I do. My parents literally had to take her with them on a sailing trip they took to a nearby island when they were meant to go alone because they couldn’t trust her. It’s just getting increasingly harder to live with, especially now that it’s the summer holidays and we’re out of school and at home all the time. Wow that was a rant but my point is please try and limit your younger sibling’s exposure to things, or your child’s- although the internet is great it’s dangerous and my sister has literally picked up these behaviours from videos I’ve even seen her watch. She speaks to me with these stupid comebacks she hears on KZfaq and thinks she’s super smart and cool, in response to a simple question or request. If I had done this sort of stuff when I was her age, I would have been figuratively killed by my parents, but her being the youngest they’ve become way more lenient with everything and they NEVER punish her for anything, and if they do it has no effect because the punishment is bad and not for nearly as long as it should be- I won’t go into detail but my parents were away and my little sister literally thwacked my older sister on the back, super hard and was horrible and disobedient for over 2 hours, when she was just asked to go downstairs for lunch!! All my parents did was take her devices away for a day!! edit, an update a year later: she is worse now.
@erinlikesacornishpasty4703 Жыл бұрын
She's undoubtedly going through puberty and her hormones are making her less mentally stable. I behaved similarly at that age and did not have access to anything like TikTok. I don't think she should blame your autism, obviously, the things you're doing seem like normal older sibling things. But I will say that my life dramatically improved when I flat out told my parents that I was not my sister's mother, my mother is her mother, so I could not and would not be responsible for parenting her. There is only a small age gap between us and it made it difficult for my sister to even respect that I was wiser than her at all. And I pointed that out to my folks and they realized maybe I WASN'T actually all that much wiser than she. Obviously I thought I was, but it didn't really matter. What mattered is that I couldn't be responsible for her, even though I love her and want her to be ok. She's too much for me, even on a good day, and quite frankly she was a handful for my folks. Explain things to your parents that way, and thier expectations of you may change 🤷♀️.
@cloudine3218 Жыл бұрын
Take this with a pinch of salt bc im No proffecional but i think it best to either take away her devices permanetly or take her to some kind of therapist. Or both. As someone Who also had unlimited internet access this kind of behavior is too much. Yes children can be real mean or too much (especially when your ND) but this is not „normal” and with all respect to previous comment i Don’t think its „hormones”. I really Hope you’re able to solve this for your own and your sisters good

Joking poking my nosy head in and concurring with another commenter - I think something deeper might be going on with her. Her behavior kind of reminds me of a kid I knew who had oppositional defiant disorder (and some other mental health issues), back in the dial up days when we were all limited to a certain amount of hours of internet use because it would rack up the phone bill. The behavior started insanely young, and restricting what they could watch online/on TV only did so much. I'm not saying your sister specifically has ODD, and I'm not a mental health expert to give opinions that can be taken too seriously, but it just feels like there might already be another factor at play, which the free internet access worsened.

@@stealthis I just hear a lot of stories about kids getting in tons of trouble for blowing all their parents’ money on Roblox or something haha. I’m glad you were a child prodigy in medical school at the age of 10 lol. Maybe it’s not that I don’t have faith in the children, but that I have zero faith in the parents who do not monitor their activity online to any degree. Four-year-olds have tablets haha. That’s fine if the parents put the proper controls on it so that they cannot access things they shouldn’t. But sometimes the parents don’t ☹️
@stealthis2 жыл бұрын
@@Rachel-xg7hs it has nothing to do with being prodigy. Stop setting the bar so low. Do you really believe that all 10 year olds think it's ok to take their parent's credit card and go buck wild with it? Were you like that? It's more of a problem with the upbringing in general if they do these things.
@Rachel-xg7hs2 жыл бұрын
@@stealthis I’m pretty sure I acknowledged that it was the parents’ fault in my reply to you haha. And the prodigy thing was sarcasm. Complete sarcasm. I never stole my parents’ credit cards to buy anything, no. Not at any age. But also there are kids much younger than 10 using the Internet nowadays. I’ve seen it. I was a 2000s kid, so I’m pretty fluent in technology haha, but I didn’t get my own device with internet access until 11 (an iPod touch), and didn’t get my own phone until 14. Little kids have tablets now. And I’ve met more than one six-year-old with a smartphone. If the parents are monitoring everything the children do, then great. I don’t care what devices they buy them. But if the parents are too stupid to make sure the kids aren’t getting on TikTok and finding stuff like this, then it’s just not fair to the kids. These videos promote it like it’s not wrong at all, like it’s not something the parents would be unhappy about. When you’re little and you see grown-ups doing something, sometimes you assume that if they’re doing it, then it’s okay. Why would they be doing it if it wasn’t okay haha? And not all parents let their children know that they shouldn’t borrow their credit cards. They assume the kids won’t do it or won’t know how, so they never talk about it with them. The kids might not know how bad of an idea it is because they’ve never had that talk.

I started using social media at your age, I'm now 23, and I regret it every day. I'm not saying "don't call CPS", just be mindful of it. So many people call because they believe the kid will magically be better off, and thats not always true. Some time ago I found a really great comment on the topic of nowadays internet vs. the internet we were able to explore as kids: "When we were kids, the internet was a sandbox-style open world - full of dangerous things, yes, but also nearly unlimited potential - and we learned to be careful, and we learned fast, and we learned fairly well. Now, the internet is a series of black box silos built by corporations to maximize engagement at the expense of everything else. I may have seen Two Girls One Cup by accident and at the tender age of ten, but I never had to deal with companies using gambling-addiction-creating strategies pioneered in literal casinos to try and make me hand over hundreds of real dollars at the same age. I may have been exposed to vicious bigotry in anonymous and pseudanonymous messages boards, but I never had algorithms spoonfeeding me explicitly far right radicalizing content. The blithely unfettered access people of our generation had is just genuinely not the same as what kids with unsupervised access are getting today."

Something I will always be upset about is the disappearance of child friendly sites. My parents introduced me to computer use with pre-downloaded games, and no internet. Growing up, I had sites like BrainPop, Kizi, Coolmathgames, Animal jam, and Disney Create to play on, and as I grew more trustworthy and responsible, I was given a phone and my own laptop. It's painful to see actual kids at the age of like 7, on TikTok, KZfaq, and other sites that they aren't ready for. It isn't that "internet bad", but there's a time and a place for everything, and people can't just throw their children into the internet hoping they float. Introducing internet slowly is a dying concept, and I'm very lucky my parents taught me well.

As someone with a younger sister, I HATE these channels with a passion. My sister watches many videos and I guess at some point she stumbled upon the wrong type of content. Now, she believes that all girls should be pretty and that boyfriends are VERY important and has toxic beauty standards and stuff. It’s gotten to the point where she refuses to eat cuz she doesn’t wanna become “fat and ugly” I really blame myself for not supervising her better. I’ve been supervising her a lot these days to make sure she stays away from that bullshit. Fortunately, she’s getting better now. Me and my mom are kinda changing those fucked ideas they brainwashed into her head. We’re kinda using the things she’s obsessed with (such as beauty) to make her do good things instead of bad things. Such as telling her “you’ll look most beautiful if you eat lots and grow up nice and healthy”. I’ve also been having conversations with her, telling her that a boy’s opinion about her or her appearance does not matter at all. I told her that if any boys bother her, she should come straight to me and our 3 older brothers. I’ve thankfully managed to catch this on pretty early and change the thoughts while they were still fresh in her mind. Guys, supervise your kids and younger siblings. The internet is a very shitty place, unsuitable for children at all. Sadly, there are many content creators who don’t care at all about a child’s well-being and just do this disgusting shit...

Personally I don't have a big issue with children having access to the internet, but it needs to be in moderation and under parental/guardian supervision. Keep an eye on them and make sure that they're watching or viewing age appropriate content, use the parental control functions on their devices (they're there for a reason!), and be sure to educate them on internet safety. Another good tip is to sit down and have a chat with them about what types of things they like to watch online, that way you can keep tabs on the sort of things they're looking at and how it's effecting them; and if they're watching something inappropriate you can explain to them why it's bad and why they shouldn't be watching or engaging with that type of content.

Even though I vehemently despise the rhetoric of "these kids and their phones. Technology bad amirite?" I would urge a parent with young children not to give them technology without restrictions and to encourage open dialogue of what websites they would like to or currently like going on (without stifling interests). Leaving your kid on the wild west of the internet is socially akin to not paying attention to them in a bar or party. Like, dont be surprised if they mimic or see some messed up shit. And if they do see/do some messed up shit, learn how to teach them what it means and why it isn't good to behave like that. Of course without damaging the trust you need in order to successfully raise your child.

I'm so glad my aunt doesn't allow my little cousin on tiktok. She also keeps an eye on his phone in general (he's 7) parents don't do that nowadays. My cousin downloaded a "kids" app about murdering parents once. Like,whys that even a thing. And apparently it's a well known app. The internet is way too dangerous for kids to be unsupervised.

Yeah this is why I heavily monitor everything my 3yr old watches and I pick educational games for her to play. Technology can be beneficial if used correctly but you can't leave a kid on their own in the internet cause of stuff like this
@bluebree2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad my 3 year old daughter likes Bluey and Peppa Pig. I probably won't let me daughter get a phone until she's in HS. If she does have a phone at a young age the internet will have to be disabled so she can only call or text me if she needs me. Sounds harsh but I don't want her having a tik tok account at 6 years old cause that shits sad.

Seriously, my mother never really understood internet stuff and i got my first phone at 7 (I'm 15 now) and I'm so lucky i didn't find any of this stuff, i recommend these cds with kids ed games. I loved them as a kid and you know for sure they're safe. Lots of love❤

human brains arent fully developed until your mid 20s, and social media is meant to be as addictive as possible, and were learning that social media changes your brain in negative ways knowing this, handing over social media to children is INSANE! its like letting them vape
