Søren Kierkegaard didn’t mince words as he criticized the lack of passion he observed in the church of his day. In this message, R.C. Sproul addresses the writings of the father of existentialism.
This message is from Dr. Sproul’s 35-part teaching series The Consequence of Ideas. Learn more: www.ligonier.org/learn/series...

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. I appreciate this ... Iron Sharpens Iron ..approach and attitude between Dr. Sproul and Dr. MacArthur .... These two men brought out so much thought and cleared up so much confusion on epistemology and what true biblical understanding is that the Bile becomes more easily understood when these principles are adhered too .... Let God and Jesus Christ ... have..All.. the glory ...not themselves or anybody else

Thank you! So pleased to watch this again. I have wanted more context concerning Kierkegaard because of his position on subjectivity. I wasn't sure how to place him. This was clear and helpful. I am grateful to God for R.C Sproul and his legacy of teaching. R C's passion for the truth of God's Word has equipped and encouraged so many Christians.

As much a fan as I am of R.C. Sproul, and as enthusiastic as I am to see a learned Reformed Christian talk so enthusiastically about Sören Kierkegaard, I have one non-trivial comment to make. In "Fear and Trembling", Kierkegaard spoke, not about a "temporary" suspension of the ethical, but of a "teleological" suspension of the ethical. This is not an unimportant distinction. God had a "telos", a goal in mind in asking Abraham to do the unthinkable, the forbidden, the unethical. It was for a purpose that God appeared to be "temporarily" suspending the ethical. But of course, for a holy and omnipotent God ( YHWH ) to do this was, in a sense, for Him to set aside His very holiness. How could Abraham serve such a God? How could he believe such a God's promises? This is why Abraham tossed and turned all night in fear and trembling. His soul was rent in two.

I think you are definitely on to something but due to the fact that God never allowed the immoral command to be accomplished couldn’t one make the argument that God never truly suspended any morality but rather made it appear so. I guess to make a counter point one could make the case that that would be a lie but Im not too sure

You're wrong. God had nothing 'unethical' in mind, His goal, all along, was to provide the offer Himself. It's one of the many great foreshadowings of what happened on the cross, when He provided and gave His only Son! At the same time, He tested Abraham's faith, if Abraham was willing to give up everything and really believed God and the promises He made to him: "By faith, being tested, Abraham offered up Isaac; and the one receiving the promises was offering up the only begotten, as to whom it was said, "In Isaac your Seed shall be called" considering that; God was able to raise even from dead ones; from where indeed he obtained him in a parable." (Heb 11:17-19)

This is why I truly believe in double predestination - I know this concept usually isn’t applied to the figures of the Old Testament, but Abraham was elected by God to be a holy and righteous man - and I believe this story in the Bible is to demonstrate the sovereignty of God and His election of some to salvation and purpose and others to destruction and purpose.

Yesica, Paul - the things want to do we do not do, the things wish not to do we desire to do. This to me begins with the understanding that our condition is one of struggle concerning our desires and a Santification in resisting to the point bloodshed covers Mr. Soren writing and works. Lest one heads into some type of sinless perfectionism or Law wrangling that seems as though it will always be contained in the struggle to turn our hearts trust to its Savior.

The explaining of Kierkegaard from someone who is a fundamentalist and i think a Calvinist takes away from the breadth and the deep complexities of Kierkegaard's ideas . Kierkegaard was in no way a conventional Christian and was certainly not a fundamentalist!

If he was a Christian, why was he despairing over some chick? Worse, a married one?! If this chick was married, why was she chasing him? Why was he going along with it? If she's chasing him while married, she's obviously not a Christian. So why would he be interested in a non Christian to begin with? That's what I'm understanding from this article/book review. Is this information correct? A Keeper of Love’s Flame: Regine Olsen and Søren Kierkegaard April 9, 2014 • By Morten Høi Jensen "ON MARCH 17, 1855, the 33-year-old Regine Olsen was due to leave Copenhagen for the Danish West Indies, where her husband of eight years, Johan Frederik Schlegel, had been appointed governor. ... Whether in spite or because of the ominous journey ahead of her, Regine made an important decision, it seems, on the day of her departure: she sought out a strange man to whom she had once been engaged; a man who had left her, and to whom she had not spoken in 14 years. But if they had not spoken, Regine Olsen and Søren Kierkegaard had not exactly remained strangers either. For years they had passed each other on their walks throughout the city, often in an openly calculated fashion. " This is creepy. Further information in that article/review makes it even more so. If she was married, she needed to stay away from him. If he claimed to be a Christian, he needed to stay away from her. Again, I don't know if this is information is accurate. But, if so, it turns me away from having any interest in reading his work. No Christian would behave like this.

With all do respect christians DO behave like this. Christians do not WANT to behave like this. None of us are without scandal. None of us want to be with scandal. It is the paradox of the new nature in Christ. I don't write this in an argumentative tone. You are right, but in disbelief of how desperately wicked we are. They were still being saved and so are you if you believe.

There is no doubt that Jesus qualified, we did not, otherwise he need'nt die. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Heb. 4:15 He may have been on his own journey of sanctification with Christ, who knows? And who know what Paul struggled with when he called himself a wretched man, am i justifying scandalous life by christian then,by no means. If your deeds come to light they must be dealt with as a product of your flesh and suffer whatever consequence as may please the Lord. But Kierkegard's passion like that of David was obvious from the account of his life and we could certainly do with some of that passion. My kindest respects for sharing your thought.
