I am quite impressed by this bike. Like the RT before it, the more I ride it, the more I want to. It is not perfect, and one little issue has popped up, but for the most part all is well.

Thanks Kiki, You definitely helped me make my decision. I'm going on 6 months now with my GT and really enjoying it. At times i wish it had reverse, for the garage and such, but other than that can't get enough of that 6 cyl sound. I did install a Ztechnik tall windscreen and very glad I did. Even in a low position, much more quiet than stock. Ride Safe. T

I've been looking at this bike for a couple years now..I think I'm going to have to own one. I've been in love with inline 6 engine since owning a 79' CBX in the early 90's.. Thanks for the review.

Great review Chris! I have the same bike, a 2018 K1600GT and after 9,000km enjoy all that this sport touring bike offers. It's very easy to keep one's feet on the pegs and utilizing the friction zone, ride in heavy traffic and execute turns at slow speeds. Braking is effortless and highly effective. The ride is very comfortable during all regimes and having the added reverse function is nice when negotiating tight parking spots. I agree with your assessment about the ever so slight negative pressure pulling the rider forward toward the windshield and conclude it's simply the vacuum effect of this bike's design. In comparison, the GT Sport has a shorter windshield so it may not have this issue. This effect may result in too much space between a rider and pillion for the pillion to feel secure (something to consider). Recently rode 1,000 km between 6°C (~42°F) 3.5°C (~37°F) and would have appreciated a little more hand protection from the relative airflow, like you mentioned. The handlebar heat coupled with the dual season Motorrad gloves I wore was slightly inadequate requiring more warm up stops and adding time to the ride. I should have worn warmer gloves. Seat heating just met expectations during this cold ride. Both handle and seat settings were on high (5 illuminated bars). I can't comment whether the heated rear seat (which only has low and high settings), would be adequate for a pilion during a similarly low temperature ride. The only recommendation I would add for potential buyers is (1) consider a taller windshield to improve cocooning on long rides in windy conditions which is standard on the GTL and Grand America Bagger and (2) to ensure one's helmet fits very snug. Two smaller features that need attention on future K1600GT designs are (1) the inadequate size of the foot lockers being too small for today's sized smart phones and (2) the angle of the rear panniers sloping forward: items often get caught in the pannier seal when closing the pannier. Case liners would solve this issue. The bike came outfitted with V rated Bridgestone Battleax tires which have been superb in all weather, wind and cornering conditions assisted by the traction control and 3 ride modes: Road, Dymanic and Rain. The bike is a dream to ride; a cruise missile in BMW livery which I would rate, like you, a 9/10. 😎👍 Edit: forgot to mention unintended side benefit which I'll call BMW therapy...😁🙏😇. I was plagued with lower back pain resulting in a tight IT band down my left hip and quad. The K1600GT seating position with knees bent and feet on the pegs during long rides, naturally stretched out my IT band enabling me to sit comfortably without any more discomfort and even stand flat footed at intersections. I stand 5'10" with 30" inseam wearing motorcycle shoes, not boots. Hope this helps!

I just purchased a used 2013 GT like yours with 17K miles on it based on all of your reviews! Thanks. I actually traded in my 2012 RT and did find i may have waited too long to get rid of it as i had to put some money down to get out of it. So far i have only had mine for 12 hours, but love it. IN fact, i think owning the RT and riding it over 12k miles last year, allowed me to slide right into this bike with little if any learning curve. So your message did find a receptive audience and a grateful viewer. Take care!

I'm very impressed with all your reviews. Very thorough. I have been eyeing the GT ever since its release and have yet to pull the trigger. I wanted to see what happened with them on the wear and tare after a few years of use. Price is just a little steep still but looking to find a good used trade in somewhere. I would have to get rid of my Hayabusa to do it and I haven't been able to make that break yet. Thanks for all your updates. Keep up the good work.

I had commented on your other videos ref the K16 and hadn't realised that you had taken the plunge. Congratulations. Will watch out for your next report with interest. Regarding cost. I'm currently riding a 30 year old K100RT that cost me the equivalent of $500 in April of last year. Think nothing of getting on it and knocking off a couple of hundred miles. Then, this year I've inherited a life changing sum of money which should be sorted by the end of the year. continued...

I like your comments, and I can understand your position. That being said, having owned Japanese ST bikes, and although I loved each one, every one of them had a reliability flaw. My FJR had 12 valve guides fail after one year of ownership-- Yamaha declined to cover. and The ST (2002) had a major speed wobble at highway speeds and a leaking brake system after 3 months of ownership. Honda repaired the brakes, but argued that the wobble wasn't there. I still say they are all great bikes, though.

I must agree with you on the size comparison-- i replaced a set of tires on a 13 earlier this summer, and having my 16 beside it, the 13 is genuinely smaller. And that can be very appealing to many. On the water pump-- yeah-- it doesn't bother me, since the total amount is almost unnoticeable (even after 10000km), and all the big bikes i have owned over the years have had a wort or two.

Although i have driven in rush hour in SoCal, i have not done it on a bike, let alone this one. That being said, i have driven this in a motorcycle "parade" ride, in very hot conditions (90 ish). The bike did fine, as well as any, i presume Riding comfort would be excellent, since it manages heat very well. The one point i will make is that some of these K16's have a weeping water pump (its a minor issue in my eyes) , but in the 4 months i have owned this one, i have yet to top it up.

-- cont.. .. my point is that most big technical bikes will have some reliability issues, regardless of the continent they are from. And on the price, the base bike to bike comparison is roughly $5500, and for that you get more performance, electronic throttle maps, heated grips and seats, cruise, brighter lights, more advanced suspension and better engine heat management.

I've owned two late model RT's and one k1200 S. All were great bikes but my K1600 gt sport is a world class sport touring bike. Honestly I cant envision another bike worth my consideration in the near future. My riding is mostly two up riding over mountain roads here in New Mexico. If scraping foot pegs is your cup of tea, seamless power and torque, with state of the art electronics then the 1600 deserves your serious consideration. I also agree that this is not a beginners bike. My only compliant is the bike eats tires and the cost of admition is steap.

Hey kiki. I can't believe you're so laid back about a leaky water pump on a brand new bike, particularly as they cost at least £17500!! I had a K16 for a morning last Autumn, thinking to replace my K12GT. I can't really fault the 16 but it's just not for me; bars in the wrong place, pegs in the wrong place and just too, well, BIG. I ended up swapping for a K1300GTEE... Best Sports Tourer ever made! Stay safe, Mate. Regards, Buzz.

The GTR , known more commonly in North America as the Concours14, is a great bike. Unlike many others, speaking from experience, I don't recommend buying any of these big sport touring bikes as a first bike. So , my buying advice is always to buy one close to something you had and liked in the past. The 14 is ideal for someone coming off a powerful sportbike that prefers a more aggressive riding position and that special Japanese engine character.

Hi there, thanks for your video(s). Very informative and I liked the ones on maintenance of the k16. Just one question (maybe youi've answered it already?): you've talked in another video about the amount of play in the transmission all the way to the back wheel and I would like to know if gearshifting and (of upmost importance to me) smooth throttle roll on/roll off you may or may not get with this machine? Thank you

I have owned countless bikes over the years and they all had some degree of driveline lash or play. The absolute worst was my 1985 Honda V65 Sabre. The sportbikes were all excellent. The big bikes with shafts all tend to be a bit more prone to it. The K16 is fairly good, so you should be fine. That being said, other than track time, it doesn't bother me much. Good clutch/throttle/ and brake control can mute it. It can teach us to transition on and off the throttle more smoothly which ultimately makes us better riders.

I have, since that video, put on another 1500 miles, and just brought it out after an extremely long winter. I have not had any issues, but i constantly search, both on-line and in person at clubs and the shop, for any repeat problems. There are "one-off" problems (like every other motorcycle), but aside from the switch block on the left bar, or the waterpump, nothing more that i can see. In both of those cases, BMW has redesigned components which seem to be solving the issues.

I enjoy your videos. I put a deposit down on a 2014 RT and was supposed to pick it up on June 6th but it was recalled June 5th. It doesn't sound like the RTs will be back on the road soon. The dealer has suggested a GT(L). I am coming from a 2003 Yamaha 1100 Silverado. Do you think the GT would be too big? This is my 3rd year riding so I have limited experience. Most of my riding time is on the highway or back roads travelling to a rally where I can throw up a tent. Thanks KiKi
@kiki231000
@kiki231000 10 жыл бұрын
You will find the GTL a tad heavy, mainly because of the height of the seat compared to the low seat of your Yamaha. The RT would be an easier bike. But regardless, it won't take you long to adjust (in my opinion), and once you are moving, the GTL will feel lighter and sportier. The GT might be a better choice, since it has no top box, and the COG is lower-- closer to what you are used to. I did hear about the SRO on the RT -- thats too bad, but I assume they will get a fix fast, and implement it. Here in Canada they are a lot less expensive than the GT.

The comment on the back pressure is relevant, since that characteristic doesn't exist on the RT. And since I ride in temperatures well below freezing, having good airflow with the shield all the way up is important.

I have not had any issues with mine and the water pump issue has gone away on its own. I would take The comments on reliability with a grain of salt. There are, no doubt, bikes out there with a ton of issues. But that goes for every manufacturer out there ( I know- I worked for the others as well). If you are buying used, get a bike with a service history you are comfortable with. If new, then get the extra warranty.

I'm 6'2 and i have a 2014 r1200rt. I actually do get some negative pressure behind my head with the windshield all the way up at 80mph. Is there anything you know of that can remedy this?
@kiki231000
@kiki231000 9 жыл бұрын
I have not had a chance to test ride the new RT, but from what I have read it was supposed to have fantastic wind management. I guess that doesn't seem to be the case for you. Depending on your budget , there are always options. You can speak to the folks that build aftermarket shields ( I have had great luck with Aero flow), or you can make changes to your own shield. Back pressure is caused by the negative pressure directly behind the windshield. I owned a Honda ST that had back pressure. I alleviated it by cutting 2 holes down low on the shield ( about 2 inch parallelograms on each side of the centerline if I recall). This dramatically improved airflow, but did allow more rain and dirt to get into the cockpit area.

The difference lies in a few components. The seat, bars, windshield and standard options. Ultimately the GTL is a bike with a more relaxed riding position.

Any bike can be a first time bike, but i would highly discourage anyone from buying this bike as their first. If this style of riding is what you are looking for , you may want to take a look at the F800GT, or even look at some offerings from other manufacturers. I think once you have a few years experience, or accumulate some long distance touring miles, then you take a look at the K16.

I recommend if you buy this motorcycle that you only ride it for about 2000 miles and then keep it stored mostly in the garage under a radiant barrier to protect it from radiation. Riding this bike for real is going to cause all that electronic gadgetry to malfunction which is going to lower the value of your investment over time. But it sure would be worth getting out and looking at from time to time. It is a beauty.

The back pressure issue can be dealt with if you get a V force windshield. As far as the clunky transmission goes, I always hear about this and I think it’s a lot of bullshit. I see that with confidence because the only way to get rid of that clunkiness is to ride this thing like you stole it. Then the transmission smooths out. I it took me a long time to figure this out but as I got more confident on my K 1200 which has the same issue I discovered that when I ride it like a serious person it will ride like a serious bike.
