Almost 7 years later, wanting to buy this bike 2nd hand, this is so incredibly informative, so thank you for posting this and leaving it online as well.

Hey man, great video! I am currently considering changing my 2007 K1200GT for something a bit fresher and I'm considering either an RT or one of these. I ride an average of 20,000 miles a year, mostly motorway (highway) in all weathers and all year round (-2 degrees C this morning for my 125 mile commute to work!). My bike is my sole form of transport and I practically live on it. This video really helped so thanks a lot and best wishes from Northern Ireland!

Great review... just a couple of notes of clarification. I own a 2013 Dark Graphite K1600GT with almost 15,000 miles on her... the clutch vibration you speak of is actually the slipper clutch engaging. The bike has a wet clutch, not a dry clutch like your RT. And I am not sure if you are in Canada or the US, but in the US, the warranty is 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Other than that, you nailed the review here (BTW, I came from a 2006 RT to this bike). It really is great!

Just considering to switch my RT for a K16 after a te test ride a few days ago this video comes just at the right time. I think I will wait for the 2014 model though hoping they will work on the transmission and also see how the new RT will look like ( the engine of the watercooled GS is nice).

although there will be a "Sport" version released in 2014 (with red and black graphics and a shorter windscreen), I think what you are really looking for is a K1600S.

Are the headlamps on the k1600 superior to the RT in every way are is some of that just hype ?

thanks for the comments. In the coming weeks I will be posting a review of an aftermarket windshield upgrade on the bike, along with a comparison of the new Lithium Ion motorcycle batteries.

What I'd like to see is a more "sportier" BMW K 1600 GT. With reduced ferring, headers and larger tires. And more color selections.

Guess you have me beat....so just curious why did you go back to a 2016 R 1200 RT when you had an RT before your GT?

+evonkosc I typically switch my big bike every 3 years. The GT is a great motorcycle. And I probably would have gotten a new one, if i hadnt test ridden the new RT last year. There are some new technologies that haven't made it yet to the GT. -- the most noticeable is "dynamic" ESA. Regardless, the handling of the new RT is better in my view. A lot of folks prefer the power of the K, and i must say i love the big 6, but the R has something about it that i just cant explain.

Without a doubt they are better than the RT. The RT has very good set of lights. But the GT lights are two steps better. Even without the adaptive feature, it is clear that BMW did their homework on beam pattern and range.

Wow...okay I know I personally have switched bikes 7 times myself. I have had a Honda ACE (American Classic Edition), a Honda ST1300, Harley Davidson VROD, (Anniversary Edition), BMW K1200 S, Honda Goldwing, HD Road Glide, a Yamaha VMAX, and a Ducati Diavel. I am seriously interested in a new 2015 BMW K 1600 GT that is loaded but the price is great since it is not the most current model plus the dealership is throwing in the BMW Nav 5 and a trickle charger w/pigtail for the battery. So what are you riding now? I would love a video that shows how to properly remove the fairings on a GT or GTL. I watched videos and was capable of removing the GoldWing top shelter which is a huge piece of plastic with a lot of connections. Appreciate anything you can do. So yes please advise on what you are riding now and if this is at all possible. Thanks Eric

I am currently riding a 1981 Yamaha XJ550, a 1971 Honda PC50, and a 2016 BMW R1200RT. I have owned 47 different bikes over the last 32 years.

Ahh, I assume you are looking at the website for Motorrad where they are only showing the 2014 models. The 2013 range showed all three colors (at least in Canada it did). According to the dealership, my registration, the serial number, my insurance company (that cross checks the VIN#) , and BMW Motorrad, my K1600GT, the one in the video, the one I am demonstrating, is most definitely a 2013.

Chris, I am debating over buying a used 2012 K1600GT with 40,000miles. What is your advice? I can go back and get a newer one, but the seller is giving it for very low price. However, I do not want to buy a motorcycle and get into trouble. I would really appreciate to hear your take on it. Thanks bro

Giri Kumar if you are competent mechanically, check the bike over yourself. However, if you are unsure , tell it to a dealer for an assessment. There can be very expensive repairs on these big bikes. Also make sure the valve clearances have been serviced, as this is expensive if you don't do it yourself.

Thanks Chris. However, I am not competent mechanically and would end up going to the service station for everything. When you say 'expensive repairs', what type or amount of expenses are we talking about? How much it would cost to service the valve clearance? Sorry to bother, but your comments and tips are very helpful. Thank you

Giri Kumar Scheduled maintenance by a BMW dealership can be very pricey, and this is in part because the processes can be quite involved. Checking valve clearances on a K16 can cost upwards of $1000 (and usually includes other scheduled service). I do my own work so my expenses are my time, supplies and parts. And parts are pricey on these bikes as well. You can get an idea from on-line sources how much the various assemblies are to buy. If you have a dealership close by, the prospect is a bit more appealing, since you don't have to drive far if you need something, and you can have them verify the bike before buying it. I would also take the time to join an on-line group of your choice to get a feel for how these bikes are doing by those who already own them.

Thanks Chris, it is better to buy house closer to you, and then buy a BMW motorcycle :) You are super good with all these.. Bless you dear friend.

If you want more air on you, the 1600 is better in that regard but in the rain or cold, the RT is much superior to the 1600 bikes. This guy is wrooooong.

This analysis in comparison of the RT and GT relative to the windshield and fairing is misleading and mostly incorrect. Windshield shape ad height is an option for both bikes. A simple change. In no way in all my rides and testing between the three bikes, a 1600GT, 1600GTL and the R1200RT is the fairing on the two 1600s as effective as the RTs fairing. The 1600 has more buffeting at and around the helmet, passenger and more air around the shoulders. The passenger suffers the most because the fairing is too narrow for a touring bike passenger. So in effect, you get 190 more lbs in weight, less protection for more engine and a higher cost in a less effective bike because it doesn’t handle as well on twisty B roads. The R1200, 1250 Rts are still the better bikes for any road.
