Bliss my 21 week old puppy has long legs now and has started putting his feet up on the counter. In this video I am showing an unedited training session on how I am working on this counter surfing issue. Because this is a training session in real time, I worked on the default leave it from food on a low table and then did a fun game in the same training session, teaching my puppy to back up.

I accidentially reinforced my hound dog with one of those crumbs once. It took a month to get him to stop counter surfing. This is a great video btw! Liked & shared!

Back to say the counter surfing has stopped. She got no attention for anything she did in the kitchen, but positive rewards for coming when we called her to us (out of the kitchen). Now she glances at the kitchen and walks by. Thank you!

Bliss is so well behaved... My 6 month old BC is always so excited and all over the place, so I'm trying to reset his training afresh now... Really hoping we can do it and not too late to unlearn all the bad behaviours

Great video. Its so important to teach dogs simple things like this. I can leave the room with a plate of food on the floor even and my Ruby wont touch it.

My training is for myself… after 3 years of yelling at my dog to get down it’s just as impulsive for me to to yell as it is for him to put his feet on the counter. 🤦‍♀️ I’ll start working on it. I am religious about keeping my counter clean but others have not been so strict and of course my smart springer spaniel takes advantage of every opportunity even if it’s only once every couple months. Lol

Oh, man this is so timely. My pup, like Bliss, has discovered that she can see up higher now. She was so tiny for so long that it was never an issue, and her big sister has been so good about not doing it so I was figuring that like so many other good behaviors, she was going to learn this from her sister. But no. So thanks for this! I really appreciate your showing us your videos that show the process along with your comments on how you react and why. So very helpful.

@@kikopup how long should one expect a puppy to learn to not counter surf if you are consistent? Is it something that should come quickly or one of those things that takes a little long?

@@jasonkelley5394 I think that depends to a great extent on the dog - with some it's management for life! The earlier you start, the more you work on it and reinforce the alternatives, and the less opportunity the puppy has to practice the "wrong" behaviour and find reinforcement in the process, the faster your progress is bound to be.

This is fantastic - I have been trying to teach back up for ages using just treats, marking when his back feet touch something but nothing seems to work - will try using the smaller space and lure on both sides!

My 6 month old boy and I are living with my sometimes forgetful geriatric Mom who does put things he wants on the coffee table. We worked on leave it a while ago but he is now humongous compared to then lol. Thanks so much again!!

I tremendously enjoy your style of training dogs and learn a lot from you applying it with my first ever dog. Thanks to you our relationship is much happier and fun. Have you got a tutorial how to teach my dog to pretend being shot. This appears to be unexpectedly hard for her. We've been trying it for weeks and it still is not one but two movements - down and then a helping gesture for lying on the side. Thank you very much for showing me how to be patient and loving in everything I do with my puppy.

This is so helpful Emily. Do you have any tips on reactivity on walks? Sometimes Lucy our cardigan corgi is wonderful on walks, and other times she will bark at people approaching. I guess: how do you get a dog to stop barking once they’ve started?

i love the vid...im currently training my beagle with this,...however the hard part is to generlize the behavior,..my pup has just a bunch of curiosity on the counter..i 100% make sure im not reinforcing the behavior and proper management but her curiosity never rans out, i even reinforce her most of the time good behavior before they think of counter surfing...i think this has become self-reinforcing,...i hold myself from yelling or punishing my pup but i feel my patience running out.... :(

Ooooops. We have been using ‘off’ sternly when our boy counter surfs and he absolutely knows what it means and that it’s not allowed but now he just does it when we aren’t looking 😒 daaaamn it 😂

Hi :) your videos have been a lifeline for me and our cheeky Brittany pup!! I was wondering if you could do a video on how to stop dogs from grabbing/ripping clothes off the line? Our pup is 5 months and I just can’t get him to stop, as soon as I’m inside he is jumping up as high as he can and getting them - there’s no way I can block off the area as it’s the area where he also toilets 😵‍💫 thank you for all your wonderful videos 💐💐

That sounds like a lot of fun - for him! And just like most pups outgrow their annoying tendency to grab at pant legs/shoe laces, chances are he will eventually outgrow this, too 🙃 It will take a combination of management and training, though! What I'd do is only leave him outside unsupervised if there are no clothes there to tempt him. Otherwise, go with him for his potty breaks, keeping him on a leash if that's what it takes to ensure he's on his best behaviour. If he's to get some playtime outside, that too needs to be supervised. For the training, I'd watch Kikopup's tutorials on how to prevent a puppy from grabbing clothes/being mouthy, and I'd apply that protocol modified for the clothes-on-the-line scenario. Just keep it in mind that the more time he's had to practice grabbing the clothes, the longer it will take for him to lose interest, so you may need to be very strict about the management side for several months. I'd also make sure he has an outlet like playing tug, or using a flirt pole (making sure to keep the intensity appropriate for his age, so that you don't put excessive strain on his joints). Just remember to use a release cue whenever he's to sink his teeth in the toy, to make the picture that much more different from the other situation, where he's expected *not* to grab things. 😊

Is there anyway we can train my dog to stop pulling up the carpet on the edges? We placed a transition piece over it a few weeks ago, but it accidentally got pulled up and he’s right back to chewing it. He’s got plenty of toys and we play fetch with him to burn his energy, as well as puzzles to get his food. I just dont know what to dk anymore! Or if you already have a video on this I would love to be linked! :) Thank you so much for all your content, it has really helped me!

Another thing with using "off",, if you end up rewarding/reinforcing "off" they will sometimes start getting up on stuff just so that you can tell them to get down ! Lol

Did you get bliss already with the intention of him being a service dog? Usualy for service dog people choose large and less energic dog. Why do You use your borders? Or breed choice isnt much relevant for the tasks they will be doing?
