FILM DESCRIPTION:
Perhaps the most highly anticipated film of 2003, Kill Bill Vol. 1 marked the return of renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino after a six-year hiatus. Re-teaming the director with Uma Thurman for the first time since 1994's Pulp Fiction, the film was originally the first half of what was to be a three-hour-plus movie before being split into two films. Thurman stars as The Bride, one-fifth of a team of assassins called DiVAS. When The Bride opts to leave the outfit for a life of marital bliss, it doesn't sit well with her boss, Bill (David Carradine), so he has her former cohorts, played by Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Daryl Hannah, and Michael Madsen, show up at the nuptials, leaving behind a blood bath. Miraculously, The Bride survives a bullet to the head and, four years later, she sets out for revenge against her four assassins and their employer. The story is concluded in Kill Bill Vol. 2, released six months later.

Speaking of tiny details, anyone else notice how that bullet hole migrated from the right side of the wall behind Beatrice to the left? You see it right after she drop-kicks the coffee mug at Vernita. I'm not criticizing, I didn't notice it the first time I saw the movie (too busy freaking out at the gun in a box of KABOOM). Just wondering why they took the time to fix the wall and make another hole in the wrong spot...

There was a topic that was brought up by Bill in the 2nd movie about how Beatrix will always be a killer and she cannot keep that life away from her daughter. Beatrix getting hunted by someone from her past is a perfect setup for her arc to end the cycle of killing, proving Bill wrong, and prove to her daughter that she's not a killer anymore

+Justin Rodriguez This is why she's not Black Mamba, she's not skilled with other weaponry, only Knifes. In order for you to be *Black Mamba* you got to be skilled using every weapon, even O-Ren (who in my opinion was equal to Beatrix's level of fighting) was good with a gun. You saw how she killed that Man with a Sniper? She's good!

Mehrunissah93 Yep, but *California Mountain Snake* "Elle's Codename", has no venom, which means, it's not deadly. And that's the rank she was in the Assassination Squad! The last, and least threatening! Vernita is more skilled than Elle, but less skilled than O-Ren, Budd, and Beatrix, therefore she is #4 at being the deadliest. This is why Bill made Elle trained with Pai Mei, she was a killer, but an "unskilled killer", and she needed proper training for her to be good ending someone's life, unlike Beatrix, who was only sent to become better than Bill himself.

ZeldaTheoristb211 But, they are still deadly. They are known to commonly kill through suffocation (constriction) and are "opportunistic feeders," which I'd say describes Elle - opportunist. Also, *California Mountain Snakes are known to kill venomous snakes* I'd also have to disagree Elle is the least threatening. I think Beatrix saved her for last for a penultimate reason. Elle is the only assassin other than Beatrix Bill found worthy enough to study under Pai Mei, so clearly she was special. Based off this fight, I'd say Elle is more skilled than Vernita in hand to hand combat.

Rewatching this scene, you realize the only truly innocent characters in the whole movie (both Volumes) are the two little girls who's lives will forever be affected by their mothers' lives. After all, Bill's assassin were all in the same position. They all did the same work. Beatrice left Bill to save BB from the life of an assassin, but her revenge journey ultimately condemns BB to answer for her parents legacies given Tarantinos intended trajectory of Vol 3 if it were to happen. It makes you wonder if the carnage was worth it. Everyone in this situation gets got.

ScottieGirl20 According to the fanon rumor mill, the idea of a sequel has been batted around, from the perspective of the little girl, and her quest for revenge on Beatrix for killing her mother -- Elle becomes her mentor and tutors her in the same way Pai Mei taught Beatrix, because her death in the trailer was never truly confirmed.

Same thing applies to the main character who before pregnancy was a professional murderer, she herself took lives, yet she thought it'd be easy for her to walk away from her own actions, end up taking a whole wedding party down with her!

Not the same. Kiddo was the first one to attempt to walk away. She was brutalized by the squad for it. This is when the members of the squad have even less right to just be able to walk away because prevented others from doing that, yet a couple of them ended up doing just that in the end. Double standard hurts more than a less complex transgression.

You know what I love most about this movie? This scene right here. In most other stories the main character would give up on their quest for vengeance upon learning their quarry have changed their ways and have a family of their own now...or at least they'd let their quarry live to spare their kids the trauma of losing a parent. You know, the whole "if I do this, I'd be no better than you" rationale. But Bea? Pfft, after what they all did to her, she's decided that all bets were off and that NOTHING would stand in the way of her vengeance -- nothing. Orphaning that girl and traumatizing her? Not her problem. And the fact she even told the kid her mother deserved it without even an ounce of remorse is why I love Bea's character so much. She's exactly how a realistic, revenge-fueled antihero would act.

I agree. People say its plot armor that she never dies, but i think its that all the people she goes after are washed up. They got to live their lives free and clear after robbing Bea of hers, they stopped honing their skills, they got to walk away. Bea punishes them for their hypocrisy, their laziness, their dishonor, their arrogance… and their evil. She doesnt have plot armor. She isnt a person. Shes a being of pure vengeance. Shes a revenant.

I love how theres so much emphasis on the crunching cereal when the bride walks over the cereal. It kind of cements the idea at least to me that she has just literally crushed this girls innocent childhood beneath her boots. Details like that are what makes tarantino films so fuckin great

I'm pretty sure she is going to defend her Mother at all cost considering Beatrix has many "hits" after her. Japan, California, Texas, all over the world because of her Assassin days. Lisa Wong try to kill her by sending an agent at the hotel. The Bride only *"gotten lucky"* because Lisa's Agent felt sorry and allow Beatrix to continue her life. So with Nikki (Vernita's Daughter) it is very possible that she is going to go after Beatrix, but is debatable whether or not she is going to kill her.

Lazar Knezevic Nikki has the "potential" to kill Beatrix, and I think through clever tactics, she will if she plan her assassination correctly. If that happens, history will just be repeating itself. Just like when O-Ren's father and Mother were killed. O-Ren's father probably done something to Mastumoto to upset him, like Money or something along the lines. O-Ren wanted revenge and took out Japan's most *BIGGEST* crime lord at the age of 9. So Nikki might do the same......*might.*

She could've taken her time with the aim), she should've easily taken her out. Maybe Tarantino made it so to suggest that Bea needed a little luck to pull the whole thing off.

I said the same thing about her keep shooting. But what they don't tell you in movies is when you shoot through something like that with a semi-automatic pistol the spent cartridge doesn't leave the guns chamber which causes it to jam the only way she could have pulled that off is if she had a revolver in there she could have emptied the whole thing. Same rules apply with shooting through pockets.

Skilled assassins will obviously leave some of their behaviors & traits in their offspring. The entire reason why Beatrix tried to hide the fact she was pregnant from Bill is because she knew he would make BB somewhat like him, a ruthless & cold killer. That's what happened to Nikki, which is why she was silent about her mother's death. Nikki was doomed to be just like her mother from the start.

Am I the only one here who does not want a sequel? I want Nikki to grow, learn about who her mother was, become horrified, reach out to BB, and tell her all about Bill and the DIVAs. Both decide to give up on any quest for vengeance, and tell an older and one-legged Sofie Fatale to piss off when she tries to convince them otherwise. The Bride decides to teach them both how to be fighters Pei Mei-style and they both become very successful bounty hunters and spies. Happy ending.

This is a GREAT first chapter of the movie. It gives away just enough information for us to understand the Bride's motives, and it shows a perfect example of how merciless she is in her revenge. Also, I love how this scene takes place on a perfectly sunny day, like any other normal day. It's a nicely coded scene that doesn't give away too much and the dialogue between Vernita and the Bride is very carefully written. I love the dynamic colour palette - red shirt, blue sweater, yellow walls. Tarantino is not scared to go there with the bright colours. He knows that it won't hurt the vibe. On the contrary: the bright, day-time, colourful athmosphere makes us even more eager to know what lurks underneath all the hate between these 2 women. What is their dark past? Seriously, whenever I watch this scene, I feel like I'm watching it for the first time. It always makes me curious about what is the past these 2 are talking about, even though I watched both Volumes like a 1000 times.

What's really cool is Tarantino said this will be the little girls story if he continues this story - she says " when u grow up and still feel a certain way, come find me " And that's the next chapter is the little girls

I like the irony that Vernita now knows what it's like to be scared for her child. Just like Bea was. And Bea was even showing Vernita a little mercy by not doing this in front of Nikki. She was willing to wait. It's Vernita's fault Nikki is now traumatized.

Many people actually don't make a sound when they see horrifying things. It's like a form of shock. My brother, sister and I witnessed something really, really awful when we were 11, and while my brother and sister were both quite understandably screaming, I was completely silent (and I'm a girl btw). It felt like my voice had just been sucked away, and it was almost like I became removed from reality. I've heard many similar stories.
