I would say it's more an homage to old classic kung fu movies, more than anime. They always had lots of blood, characters with invincible skin, steel fingers, could jump 100 ft in the air, etc. lol.

This is what I was going to say, too. For example, Uma Thurman's yellow-and-black outfit is a clear homage to Bruce Lee's look in Game of Death.

Blood spray has been a trope of anime, martial arts, and samurai fiction, particularly as these sub genres converged over time. The old ‘90s arcade fighting game Samurai Shodown had finishing moves that involved fountain-like blood sprays. Hattori Hanzou is the name of a famous ninja. He’s played by famous martial arts movie star, Sonny Chiba. Meanwhile, Johnny Mo (and Pai Mei) is played by Gordon Liu, who did several famous Shaw Brothers HK martial arts movies that I grew up watching in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

This film was indeed meant to be an homage to western films/Japanese animation. The excessive blood spurting and spilling was a reference to very old Japanese films, particularly Akira Kurosawa films like Sanjuro amd Yojimbo. Kill Bill was meant to be a cross between an old western and Japanese films/anime. It shouldn't work, but it really does, and he did it so well.

"One more thing, Sofie... is she aware her daughter is still alive?" BOOM! That's how you do a cliffhanger!! 😎 Fun Fact: Quentin Tarantino originally intended to cast a Japanese actress to play O-Ren Ishii, but before casting began, he saw Lucy Liu's work in Shanghai Noon (2000) and immediately changed O-Ren into a Chinese-Japanese-American, so that Liu could play the part. Batter-Up Fact: The shot where the Bride splits a baseball in two with a samurai sword was done for real on the set. It was done by Zoë Bell, Uma Thurman's stunt double. Boom! Head Shot! Fact: When Chiaki Kuriyama (Gogo) was shooting the scene where she flings her ball and chain out, she accidentally hit Quentin Tarantino on the head as he stood by the camera.

There was an old samurai movie that had a special effects malfunction. The blood spray had much too much pressure in it. When it was released, instead of a small spray, it was a fire hose effect. Both actors played it off even though the one "cut" was nearly blown over by the force of the spray. Because they played it off so well, it ended up in the movie and set a standard. Or perhaps Quentin is just a Gwar fan.

I enjoyed your reaction, Lovely Ladies. I was wondering if you were going to put this out, considering your uneasiness before in the last live stream. 😂 No worries, it was a good reaction, and your honesty is more appreciated than not. I remember enjoying this movie when it came out, seeing it as a bit of a homage to 70s martial arts movies. With some other styles thrown in. Interesting point, the yellow jumpsuit that Uma wears, is the same type as the one Bruce Lee wore in his last movie. The action is good but almost comical, with all of the over the top loss of limbs and buckets of fake blood. Adding some suttle humor in moments throughout that you Ladies seemed to pickup on. I also appreciated the soundtrack. My only downside was some of the scenes depicting more disgusting subjects, like Buck with his friend and O-rens revenge. I think I know why you two left those scenes out. 😅 No worries if you don't want to see volume 2, I would rather you finish Back to the Future 3. Hint hint. 😆 Great reaction Ladies. 👍😎👍 And, beautiful as always.

The blood spray trope was originally an accident in a very old martial arts movie, they had a tube attached to a man that was supposed to slowly leak out fake blood, but a malfunction caused it to shoot out in a jet stream. The director was a big fan of how the scene looked and chose to keep it in the movie, leading to many other Asian filmmakers doing the same thing. Also, the fight scene in this movie was originally so graphic, that producers wouldn’t allow it to be published without being heavily cut down. So who knows what the hell happened in the original cut

The blood fountains is a nod to Japanese cult films of the late 60's and 70's, the female gangster ones called 'Pinky Violence' like 'Lady Snowblood' and Zatoichi the blind swordsman films. For both Kill Bill's Tarantino combined elements of those era Japanese films, 70's Chinese Kung Fu films and 60's-70's Spaghetti Westerns which are Westerns with Italian directors filmed in Spain with mostly Italian and Spaniard actors but a few American, German and other Euro actors as well. The live action violence was actually inspired by the 60's-70's Japanese films I mentioned which probably was some influence to later anime violence. I have tons of those Japanese films and Spaghetti Westerns btw.

As others have commented earlier, the exaggerated blood spray is a trope from Japanese samurai films of the '60's and '70's. It was first seen in Akira Kurosawa's "Sanjuro;" The blood geyser was actually a special effects mistake - the pressurized fake blood was supposed to flow out, but a broken hose caused it to all shoot out all at once. Kurosawa decided he liked it, so kept it in the movie and decided not to re-shoot the scene. There are several interesting references in Kill Bill because Tarantino is a cinephile. Firstly, I am pretty sure that David Carradine was cast as Bill because of his starring role in the '70's TV show "Kung Fu." The show was actually supposed to star Bruce Lee, but the studio chose to cast a white actor - even though the character was Chinese. Nevertheless, it was quite popular, and although Carradine has been in a lot of films and TV shows, "Kung Fu" is what he is known for. The song at the end of the film when The Bride kills O-ren Ishii is "Shura no Hana" (Flower of Carnage). It is the theme song of the film "Lady Snowblood," starring Meiko Kaji, who also sang the song. Kaji was a the go-to actress for gangster movies or other "tough girl" movies in Japan in the '70's. In addition to "Lady Snowblood" (and its sequel), Kaji starred in the Female Prisoner Scorpion series of films (about a woman who is betrayed by her lover and framed for a crime who breaks out of prison and gets revenge) and in the Stray Cat Rock series (about the leader of a gang of delinquent girls). Kaji sand the popular theme song for the former series, "Urami Bushi," which is also contained in the "Kill Bill" soundtrack. If you like movie soundtrack enka of the sort Kaji sings, you might want to find the song "Kushinashi no hana" (Flower of Gardenia) from the film "Yakuza Graveyard," in which Kaji had an important role. The original is sung by the lead actor of that film, Tetsuya Watari, but that song is frequently covered enka singers to this day, and is also popular choice at karaoke. The actress that plays Gogo Yubari is Chiaki Kuriyama. Tarantino cast her because of her work in the film "Battle Royale" from 2000, based upon the Takami Koushun novel of the same name published the year before. Tarantino actually wanted Ko Shibasaki. In "Battle Royale," Shibasaki played the psychotic Mitsuko Soma that inspired the Gogo Yubari character, but for some reason he wasn't able to get her. Kuriyama played athletic Takako Chigusa, who had a short but memorable scene in the film. Sonny Chiba, who played Hattori Hanzo, was also a staple of '70's Japanese gangster and martial arts films. I might be mis-remembering, but I think he played a character strikingly similar to his character in "Kill Bill" in an earlier Japanese film, the name of which eludes me. Interestingly, the name of his character in "Kill Bill" is associated with ninja in pop culture. The historical Hanzo was a retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who would finally unify Japan, ending the Sengoku Jidai ("Era of the country at war") to establish the Tokugawa Shogunate which controlled Japan until the Meiji Restoration in the 19th Century. The Hanzo family was from Iga province and Hattori is credited with leading a corps of warriors who engaged in what we would call "special operations" (including the rescue of Ieyasu's family, who were being held hostage by the Imagawa clan), which is where the ninja association comes from. During the Sengoku Era, the line between samurai and ninja was not as sharp as popular culture would later imagine (an image that continues to this day).

The blood and violence is a staple of samurai movies from Japan (which, in their own way, inspired anime). The blood-spurting, for example, is straight out of Lone Wolf & Cub, and Oren Ishi-i is essentially Lady Snowblood (he even uses her theme song from the original movie). That said, the Eastern-influenced elements are mostly contained to this story and a flashback in episode 2, with other genres (western, 70s grindhouse, etc.) mixed in throughout the rest of the movie(s).

It makes fun it itself by first doing an amazing action scene as the protagonists imagine it going, and then the total screw up which actually happens, yet they somehow win. I think the second one is better. Two more good action movies IMHO are "Hitman" (2007) with Timothy Olyphant and "The Replacement Killers" (1998) with Chow Yun-Fat and Mira Sorvino.

You rated 65 higher than this lol. I will say that with all of Tarantino's considered this is a basement dweller. The best thing about this movie for me is it was the movie that brought Zoe Bell and Quinton together. If you are interested the documentary Double Dare is a great watch about Zoe and stunt women in Hollywood.

the reason the blood sprays like that is to make it more cartoon like. would be a different film if it was more realistic. be a horror film. use your brains. also you think the big bosses didn't tell Quentin to tone it down. that's one of the reasons it goes black and white
@ForceOfLightEntertainment
@ForceOfLightEntertainment 5 ай бұрын
Don’t feel the “use your brains” was necessary for a passing comment that was made about a movie. Yes, they did that so it could keep a basic R rating. Brain used 🤩😜

And, tbf, as dramatic as all the blood spray is, there are no major arteries in the top of the head! 😆 (All that said, this isn’t my favorite film of his either, although I rather love the exploitation genre and era of film, including all its grunginess.)

I always appreciated the style and the choreography of the Kill Bill movies , but thought they were overdone. Only seen them a couple times myself. They are an unrealistic adult “Anime” before it got trendy. I PRAY 🙏🏻 Angels Natalie 😇 👩🏻‍🦰 ❤️‍🔥 & Michelle 😇 👩🏻‍🦱 ❤YOU DO NOT HAVE NIGHTMARES 😱 from watching this. Totally agree, 1000%. It's ok, but the second halves of both "volumes" suck, in my opinion, especially volume 2. My favorite stuff is all in the first half of Volume 2. I think the last half of Volume 1 is ridiculous and silly, and the last section of Volume 2 anti-climactic, overwritten and frankly boring. Bill was written for Warren Beatty; every line Carradine says, I just imagine Beatty saying. Carradine even speaks like him a little bit. Love the scene where Michael Madsen gets chewed out by his boss, to me that's the best scene in both volumes; most reactors skip that scene! :D

Why watch a film you don't like with your friend? You jaded her opinion with your comments about the realism of the movie and constant joking about the film. Odd for a fan of the Star Wars goofiness to be such a stickler for real blood and effects.
