KILLERS OF MEN: The Fierce Amazon Women Were Real?

The Amazons are legend in the history of Ancient Greece. Described as “the daughters of Ares.” And the “Equals of men” these women lived in their own villages, among which is their capital, Themyscira. The city was said to be fortified on the Thermodon River. Here the women lived free of men but in a region inhabited by barbarians and man-eating cannibals who know no law or justice. They maintained their independence by being fierce warriors. The neighboring Scythians called them Oiorpata, meaning the “killers of men”. They were experts on the horse and with bows and Javelins. No man was permitted to stay in their cities. To maintain their population they captured men from neighboring tribes in order to conceive children. If a pregnancy resulted in a girl, she would be raised as a warrior. If it was a boy, it would be abandoned or killed. They don’t marry. To marry would mean they cease being an Amazon.
The description of the Amazons above was used in the opening of this episode. Questions exist to this day on whether they were myth or a real people. The Histories recorded tell an interesting story and recent archeological evidence is compelling. Watch the video and decide for yourself. Were the Amazons real? And if they were, what happened to them?
**I would like to apologize. A number of the primary sources referenced in this episode were done so second hand. I found it very difficult to get a hold of some of the works of the ancient authors referenced and was left to resort to the works of secondary sources that quoted them. As far as I have been able to tell they are valid and the secondary sources used are reputable. If it is any consolation, this video took nearly twice as long to research as I searched in vain for works I could not find. **

I've watched all your videos in the last few days. I'm honestly surprised you don't have more subs and views. I think if you did one or two videos a week, GPU could definitely see huge growth and see this become a career. You have a good voice, appearance, stage presence, video editing, you are both informative and humorous. I'm a history buff and have watched hundreds of docs and watched many different history based KZfaq channels and I think you definitely have what it takes. I love your channel and I have subbed.

This is not good for my ego. In all seriousness, I do genuinely appreciate the praise. A lot of work goes into these and I am actively working to get better at editing and story telling. I am very excited to see what I can make of this in the next year or two. Thank you.

you joke, but that's more or less what military black-ops are about. Factionalism and infighting are a facet of the military that no one likes talking about, not even the anti-war people are willing to touch that with a 10-foot pole. It implies a startling ... relevance. it's one thing to say tyfys to a vet, but when you start implying that the military has a political role, that interferes with the ideals of professionalism and civilian control that everyone likes to pretend is a real thing.

Tomyris, also called Thomyris, Tomris, or Tomiride, was a queen who reigned over the Massagetae (Modern Iran) She would have existed after the time Homer described the Amazons. The Scythians also reportedly had women warriors.

The archaeology suggests that the tribes of Pontic steppes and Western Siberia during the Bronze and Iron age did allow women to bear weapons and train for war. A number of burials of the Scyths, Sarmatians and Saka have contained young women dressed for war. You will note that the Vikings too had a concept of the 'shield maiden'. A young unmarried women trained in the art of war. It was not unknown to the Celts and German's too. Many Greek cultural groups and thus city states were some what misogynistic. Women were supposed to be demure and obedient, fit for only child rearing and household tasks. The Spartan women were some what of an exception. Although they were certainly not warrior-like. I imagine that a few Greek traders living in the colonies that existed in what is now Ukraine and Crimea may have encountered Scythian and Sarmatian groups containing armed women at trading posts. They would have found this strange and shocking. Its probably how some exaggerated stories led to the legend of the Amazons. Of course the Steppe tribes themselves looked very odd to the Greeks. They were long haired barbarians with strange clothes decorated with golden plaques. I think the Greeks may have considered them feminine in a way.

The most bizarre thing about Amazons in mythology is that they can stay young forever, and they are one of the deadliest female warriors because they would take over and conquer small towns, kidnap young men or boys, torture or rape them if they found them attractive, and it's disgusting that they would rape young boys without food or water, and it's horrible for what they did.

The "wisdom" of the Greek philosopher/physician escapes me...breast tissue is OBVIOUSLY not muscle. As a bow hunter, I have shot a bow many times. Only the left breast interferes with shooting a bow for right handed women...and then only VERY rarely. Thus, painfully removing a baby thermos & exposing a future warrior to infection is very illogical.

they did it when they were like 5yo. if the kid died of infection, well, just wait another 5 years or whatever. that's how the thinking generally went on marking out your children as members of the tribe.

I feel bad for them, I want to say this respectfully but it sounds mocking. These men who are pissed over this probably were hurt by women, or are tired of todays politocal BS. I'm glad that I know not to be triggered by stuff like this video, but be critique of woke movies like "The Woman King", which was inaccurate & basically worshipped a slave empires capturing force. I do hope both genders can come together & realize this childish 'gender war' is cringe, like the Navahū Diné did.

It’s all based in the historical evidence. So from the writings and archeology, it could all possibly be real. Or at least reality could be close to the myths.
