Osage person here! When y'all see this movie, know that this is a only a chapter in our history. We do not live as victims today, though the effects of the Reign of Terror are still present. We are a proud, resilient people and our tribe is a strong nation. This story needs to be told, but just know that there's so much more to us than just this. Also, know that we weren't saved by what's now known as the FBI. Many cases weren't investigated, much less solved. Our people got through this chapter by relying on each other.

A Scorsese movie in theaters always feels like an event

As an Oklahoman, this is a story I just found out about a few years ago. Same with the Tulsa Race Riots. These stories are ignored and forgotten and they don’t teach you about them in school. Even in a class called Oklahoma History which every student in Oklahoma has to take in High School. It’s a sad fact. I’m glad some of these stories are being told through films like this or HBO’s Watchmen.

Just saw this movie in Japan in IMAX and was surprised to see how many Japanese people came to support this movie. The theater was full and it shows how much of an effect Scorsese has had on other countries styles of filmmaking. Will never forget that experience

He truly does let the story speak for itself. There was really no climax or big emotional monologue to put people in tears. And it makes the movie feel even more real. Absolutely brilliant and I really don’t think I have seen a movie done in such a way. Like this movie is not meant to entertain people, it’s meant to tell a story he feels is important for people to know. And the ending of the movie was absolutely brilliant. He acknowledges that the movie could have had way more bells and whistles to make the movie more digestible for a mainstream audience, but chose not to for a reason.

Scorsese absolutely delivered with this film. A heartbreaking and gut-wrenching tale of murder, tragedy, sin, and revealing the wolves in sheep's clothing.

Jesse Plemons showing up felt like a super hero coming in their most desperate need.

Lily's performance is deservedly getting most plaudits, but I just got to give it to Leo's incredible facial performance. The way he projects the discomfort and immaturity of his character at times is insane.

Martin Scorsese is living legend

Between this , Oppenheimer, and John Wick 4 (all phenomenal), goes to show longer films absolutely still have a place to see in theaters for the experience.

Being a massive fan of the book that inspired it, I was pleased by the ending of Killers of the Flower Moon. No spoilers but it does a good job emphasizing how such a terrible crime against the Osage was diluted by history. Little too long, but Scorsese killed it yet again.

Martin Scorsese really wants to bring true cinema back. It'll take more people than him to do it but he is still working hard and it shows.

Lily Gladstone deserves a nomination for sure! Just like Michelle Yeoh last year, her character wears a lot of hats in this movie (though not nearly as many!) Still, Molly is quiet until she is grieving, resilient until she is broken, and endearing until her last frame on-screen. Cannot wait to see what Lily does next!

Its insane how Leonardo Dicaprio just gets more phenomenal in every movie. He did an excellent performance that its better than the last two of his movies Once upon a time in hollywood & Dont look up combined

I was the only person in the theater watching this. Couldn’t have been more happier yet saddened to see Scorsese intro the movie thanking the audience and no there to witness great actors and storytelling leaving it all on set!

I'm a longtime admirer of Scorsese. A die hard fan, let it be known. I also have no quibbles whatsoever watching a long movie. Paris, Texas is a long movie, and it's arguably my favourite film of all time. However, this felt needlessly long. Whilst I admired its nuance, I think it lacked tension and, despite its subject, it didn't feel as compelling or sure-footed as most of Scorsese's best films. Casino was a relatively long film, but it was rivetting. The heart was there, no doubt, but the focus seemed mired by its production and a foggy, opaque screenplay. Having said that, anything made by Scorsese is a cinematic blessing.

I think it's a privilege that we get to see these great two actors working together with a great director. Leo Dicaprio and Robert De Niro sharing screen is a dream come true for many of us. They only worked together once like 30 years ago when Leo was just a child, and they almost got together for Departed but De Niro couldn't because some agenda conflicts xd. Now it's finally happening and I'm glad

I've just left the theatre after watching this MASTERPIECE. Didn't think it was too long at all as every scene, every line, every detail was important. Got a bit emotional when I saw Martin Scorsese himself narrating the epilogue and the injustice in history. The pow wow drum beat is still playing in my head.

Watched in IMAX yesterday! This was brutal! I was waiting the whole time for someone to show up and do the right thing! Can't imagine what our leading lady and her family went through!! Martin very splendidly crafted human emotions and power of greed! And especially that ending scene ❤❤❤! I had my whole theater clapping and giving standing ovation in the end! This is cinema!

Impressive film with an unexpected, but brilliant ending. Scorcese still has it, as do the lead actors - he is really dedicated to the art of filmmaking. I haven't seen Lily Gladstone before, and was wowed by her serene presence and subtle acting. I was surprised at how small DeNiro looked - when he first came onscreen, I didn't recognize him. And DiCaprio resembled Brando in a lot of shots.

It was good don’t get me wrong, however it was way too long! They could have fit it all in with a 2 hour runtime instead of what we got. 7/10 it was not the 9/10 or 10/10 that some are saying! Like cmon guys. Shawshank Redemption and Godfather are 9/10 10/10 movies

Deniro is basically Palpatine here, smiling and saying he is Osage true friend, learning their ways and language. While behind scene is the mastermind of their destruction… Damn he even goes to the chief counsel giving 1000$ reward to find the murderer of a murder he himself orchestrated 😅

Three and a half hours with great actors and a fabulous director and cinematographer is a gift.

Just bring back the intermission, please! My bladder can’t handle nearly 4 hours of cinema 😢

I remember hearing about this story on a podcast so when I heard Martin was making this into a movie, I was hyped because I can't remember what actually happens in the story so it should still be fresh to me. Plus who knows if they changed shit. Cool to see Gilbert Grape, Meth Damon, Encino Man, and the Trinity Killer in this too. It's cool seeing another excellent based on reality movie like this after Oppenheimer

A world without Scorsese films is a world I don't want to live in

Maaan... I just saw it on theaters in Portugal, I've gotten to see Scorcese's work and with De Niro, it's something else, but to see this movie, the way it was made, in this day and age, with this cast. It was such an honor! Your review was beautifull, and to hear you say how much of a privilege it was and how important, well shot, beautifully paced and acted the movi turned out, it really touched me! Thank you!

This is an extraordinary story, rendered extraordinarily. So many critics have focused on the running time, and I get it, I'm getting a bit older and frailer too and tend to have bathroom facilities in mind if I plan to spend 3.5 hours anywhere. But the length is completely justified here and I am so glad I was able to watch the movie in a cinema. This is not a bunch of TV episodes cobbled together, it's a cinematic masterpiece from a master of the craft. But yes, give us intermissions back so I don't have to monitor my coffee intake before the movie starts

What an incredible masterpiece, the best movie of the year (by far) and one for the ages. You have to let the film grow inside you to realize how magnificent this is, i think it need to be watched many times to aprehend the masterful writing. When i first come out of the theatre I was speachless and maybe a bit questionning about certains aspects (the length, the point of view, the ending, the camera) but the more I think about it, the more I found it better. Now I can't take away the movie of my mind anymore, it may become one of my Top 50 favorite movies ever. I've planning to see it again this saturday and may going back again next week. Everything is perfect : the glorious cinematography, the unbelievable quality of the costumes and settings, the haunting music of the great late Robbie Robertson, the acting (Gladstone, De Niro and DiCaprio are the most stunning acting trio i've seen for a long while and the supporting cast is perfect as well), the editing, the script, the direction... Everybody deserved an Oscar. I like Chazelle, Céline Sciamma, Chris Nolan, Alfonso Cuaron, Fincher, Ridley Scott, Inaritu, Bigelow, PTA, Bong Joon-Ho... But Scorsese is on a league of his own, an other planet, the last Giant. We are so lucky to be able to witness his art, may he keeps making at least 3 or 4 maserpieces because nobody does movies like that anymore. Western, romance, crime, historical : a true American epic like we haven't seen for such a long time, mixing the genres like only a master can do. I'm french (sorry if my english isn't really good ^^) and sometimes i heard people mocking american movies and im always disagree with them because even if most of Hollywood legends are all gone by now for a long time ago and that great american movies are getting increasingly rare, there is still one filmmaker which remains the best in the world and have never disapoints me in his 50 years of filmmaking. When Marty will be gone, it will break my heart in pieces. Not only because Scorsese is my favorite direct and the one who gave me my passion for cinema as a kid but because his death will mark the end of an era. Nowdays nobody (especially in this dying and ugly Hollywood) could make such a dark and powerful film, entertaining but profund, captivating but contemplative, incredibly violent and grim but yet sometimes very funny (yeah really) or heartbraking, a movie so political but which never feels forced, a movie that takes it time whitout following other big movies conventions. A movie that make you feel reel emotions : anger, wonder, sadness, despair, hope... Such complex characters in such a complex story with so much layers ! A movie that make you want to fight capitalism and/or to go make/watch more movies. I haven't feel awe like this watching a film since 2019 with Parasite, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, Portrait of a Lady On Fire and The Irishman made by... the same Martin Scorsese. He is the best living filmaker and perhaps (at least for me) one of the best of all time. Sorry if my comment sound messy but this movie is so powerful, it overwhelmed me. I need some time and rewatches to find out where I put it in Scorsese career but definetely in the top 10 and it's my favorite of the year (and for now of the decade) for sure. It will no be for everyone but go see it if you like movies and if you are ready for that kind of slow, long, fascinating, beautiful, bleak, brutal experciences. The last part, those last 20 min, THAT last scene... My god, THIS is cinema.

This film sparks conversation after you watch it, I’ve seen a lot of movies this year that I left the theater and never gave a second thought to. It’s nice to discuss a well crafted film.

Scorsese did not commit to making the Osage the POV. If that was the case, Mollie shouldve been the POV character. It wouldve been a more haunting, suspenseful experience to see the plot and story develop through solely Mollie's eyes. Seeing it through Ernest's, took away the weight and impact by showing everything that was happening underneath the veil of innocent coincidence. Mollie would've made for a better protagonist and the film would've been up there on Scorsese's resume as one of his best. Instead, it will be remembered as a mid-level film from him; of course superior to the majority of Hollywood but vs Scorsese's own catalogue, this film is outclassed by The Departed, The Irishman, Goodfellas, Casino, The Wolf of Wall Street, Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull. Making it slightly disappointing for Scorsese's excellent, inhuman standards that he has created for himself being the undisputed Greatest Living Director and arguably greatest to ever live. I'm glad this movie exists but it could've been better and more concise. He's shown that. He's capable of perfection and repeating it but KotFM is far from perfect.

Like many people are saying, this movie is way to long, but I'd like to start with what was the most obviously problematic issue for the movie - that it seeks to shed light on the largely unknown exploitation and murder of Osage people at the hands of white criminals, but tells that story almost entirely through the eyes of the white victimizers. That Scorsese chose to let the white villains be the focus rather than have the Osage tell the story from their perspective is a total head scratcher given that the only characters that are fleshed out in the book are the Federal investigators. I know Scorsese likes to explore the dark side of human nature, but DiCaprio and De Niro's characters are so one dimensional that the audience learns everything they need to know about them in the first 30 minutes. It's not as if Scorsese and Roth had anything meaningful to say about the human condition that would justify the choice of perspective. In the 3 1/2 hours of film, the Osage are largely silent and invisible, except as foils to the main characters' schemes. Also disappointing was that Scorsese chose to focus almost entirely on the murders, without giving a fuller accounting of the breadth and scale of the exploitation. Two major issues were addressed briefly, but I would expect that many in the audience who hadn't read the book wouldn't feel their weight or even understand their importance . One was that, despite a murder count that many estimate to be in the hundreds, local police did not arrest or convict a single perpetrator before the events that take place in the film. The audience gets little sense of he climate or the perspective of the Osage as to what is happening to their community. The second is that the Osage had to "prove" financial competency in order to have control of their own money. Since the arbiters of competency were white, most Osage were forced to have a white "guardian" who doled out money at his whim. This led to a local criminal network who overcharged, skimmed, and stole from the Osage for decades. There was so much interesting material that would have made for a much more compelling story, but Scorsese ignored or glossed over them. All in all this was a huge missed opportunity - and a bad film to boot. I don't think it's a requirement for a writer or director to come from the culture they are depicting, but this is a perfect example of how a lack of perspective can spoil an important story. Vintage Spike Lee might have given a story like this life, but Scorsese was clearly not up to the task here. On the tails of Reservation Dogs, which was such a delightful and thoughtful exploration of Native American life, this movie failed to deliver anything more than a standard Hollywood take of events.

My mother and grandparents are from Pawhuska. I lived there for a short period of time also. My grandfather told me stories about this and when he and my grandmother worked for some of the families portrayed in the film. It's a lot to take in.

Same here Chris. The theater experience is unmatched when done by the masters of cinema.

The running time didnt matter at all like it did for the Irishman for me.. that one just felt way too long.. I cannot emphasize just how immersed and in love i fell with this movie. The passion of the people who worked on this bursts through in every scene all the way to the end. I have to say it’s my favorite of the year.

If I can get up enough money I'll go to the theaters to see it.

The biggest crime of this whole sordid story was both Hale and Burkhart were eventually paroled with Hale receiving a full pardon from the then Oklahoma governor.

Already saw it. Amazing! One of the best movies in this century. Performances of Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert DeNiro are Oscar worthy. I once placed my bet on Oppenheimer as best movie of the year but now I change my mind...

Just saw the movie. What a sad sad story. I'm glad they had a moment to mention the Tulsa massacre which happened before this. This is true history. This is still happening today, it's just dressed up in suits and ties. When will justice come?

I wish more critics went beyond the "could've been shorter" critique. As an audience we must learn to appreciate the storytelling process instead of the punchline. Like you said, every moment feels justified, making the story shorter would've reduced it to a more average production, which this totally isn't. One of the great movies of the decade that I'm sure will be more valued as time progresses.

Just got out of seeing this film. It was fantastic and I was engrossed throughout. What a year we are having. Two major big money blockbuster dramas in Oppenheimer and Killers of a Flower Moon. Both are going to be going head to head for all the Oscar’s.

Saw it in theater last night. Incredible pacing throughout the duration of the 3.5 hour film. Unforgettable performances from DiCaprio, De Niro, and Gladstone. Cinematography is top-notch. Does a great job of transporting you to 1920s Oklahoma.

Sometimes I just don't even know what words to use to express what I liked or didn't like about a movie or how to make it sound great. This was a great review Chris. Let alone amazing movie, your review was so well delivered. I can't believe I sat threw this movie too and it wasn't even like say a marvel movie. But there are other greats like Gone With The Wind, The Shinning ha. No comparison at all just that like omg. We are truly lucky to experience movies. I love the theater. I watched this with my whole family. From ages 62-6years old.

I grew up in Tulsa, OK and did not know about this Reign of Terror (much like the Tulsa Race Massacre) until I read the book several years ago. I have not seen this, yet, but I will soon. Thanks for reviewing ths one.

This movie was absolutely phenomenal.

It’s become a cliche’d phrase at this point but the “banality of evil” that you referenced is so chilling in terms of how awful things often rise from seemingly normal people having normal conversations. I would recommend the HBO movie Conspiracy with Kenneth Brannaugh and Stanley Tucci. A really brilliant film about the leadup to the holocaust which really shows how horrific acts can be the result of “banal” bureaucracy.

Native navajo here, this movie had me throwing up sick in the end. Yes its all true, ive heard the stories, BUT ITS ANOTHER SEE IT (Scorsese and DiCaprio, and all the cast... hats off to you) and esp i learned of most of this from my own mom b/c it was during her time. Dam good movie and im privileged to have watched it. Its good to be seen again as a human Native... even if its for a few moments.

The book is fantastic and I think it’s largely thanks to that, not surprised it turned out well. Excited for this

Its an absolute masterpiece. I just left the theatre, and random people from my screening were gathered in the lobby discussing it afterwords. Ive only seen that happen a handful of times in my life. 10/10 movie.

Loved your review. I loved the film too and felt privileged to see it on a big screen. I can’t find the words regarding the performances. Im nearing 70, am a NY Italian, my career was as an art director. Have been to Film Festivals. I met Thelma Shoemaker (sp?). I don’t speak the language a fraction as well as these giants but I feel as it is my language. I get it. Learning about the Osage, considering human behavior then and now, I am intensely grateful for these voices.

3.5 hours and I wish it was longer. What a SHOW.

This film is soooo incredibly fast paced! It felt like a 6 hour film condensed into 3.5 hours! Really rooting for Lily Gladstone for her first oscar nom! I really hope this film does well in the box office.

The ending of this film was brilliant, one if Scorsese's finest.

Going to see it this weekend, can’t wait!

Directors being worried about the death of cinema should invest in starting a campaign to fund a chain of theatres in every North American city equipped with optional intermission bathroom break screenings, ushers to make sure teenagers and zero movie etiquette viewers are warned then kicked out for phones, chatter, basic movie no no’s and most of all! Less seats and better chairs and spacing with increased ticket price to make it happen. I will easily spend $25 for a decent seat I can adjust my posture and have both arm rests and no chatter or phones for a movie like this. It’s as easy as having like two dedicated auditoriums with legit rules and comfort for cinephiles that pay for the experience. That way you don’t have to retrofit every room and franchises can easily renovate without shutting down.

For me, this movie is Scorcese’s magnum opus. Every frame felt so powerful and that is saying something for a movie as long as it is. I can’t believe some people are avoiding this film because of the length. It’s a masterpiece.

The greatest and most beautifully ugly and tragic masterpiece to coke from Martin Scorsese. I almost cried like 10 times in this movie. All the performances are incredible here as well. Best movie of the year easily and the movie didn’t feel long at all considering it’s 3 1/2hr run. I can’t wait to see it again.

I've been waiting for your review of the film before seeing it. You're a film reviewer who's opinion I feel is of value. I only seen a few films I wasn't as impressed with as what you were the latest being SAW X. But the rest have been spot on for me. I was reluctant to sit through a three and a half hour film but after your review saying it's quick paced so doesn't feel long I'll see it in the theater. I thought at first I'd just wait till it came out on Blue Ray so I could start and stop it as need be. Thanks.
