Martin Scorsese's latest film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert Deniro. It is the true story of the Osage people who were murdered by those they trusted. It is based on the nonfiction book by David Grann. Find out if the movie stays close to the truth, or if it takes too many creative liberties.

In 2019 I was at Marty's summer house in Maine and I suggested this should be an eight hour long miniseries told from the Osage perspective. He proceeded to throw the book at my head saying "I make movies that live forever". Fair enough. For box office reasons you had to tell it from Ernest and Hale perspective. If this were an eight hour miniseries you could go into much needed depth on FBI and Osage communities. For that reason book wins. Movie is a solid 4 out of 5 stars. (Disclaimer I've never been to Mr. Scorsese's house and all my conversations with him have been inside my own head).

That's a fantastic story even if it is fictional 😆 I tend to prefer movies over shows or mini series, but that would be a great way to adapt this if someone wanted to cover it from all perspectives!

Great intro to your channel for me! Hell of story too and I agree with you. This movie should exist for what it can teach people, the book for what it should show about the formation of the FBI, but also a Mollie perspective should exist, or at least a story about this written by an Osage to really give insight to cultural and rippling impact effects to them then and in the present. I'm sure one will eventually come out and that will be a wild story as well.

If I remember correctly in the book, Anna (Mollie’s sister) was divorced. At a point, it was suspected that Anna’s ex husband had something to do with her murder. But later the truth showed that he had nothing to do with it.

While watching the movie I kept thinking about how it was mainly men preying on the Osage women and how it felt like a huge historical significance was being ignored when it came to MMIW.

Every movie review I have seen on the film comments on the "romance" aspect of Ernest and Molllie and how even though he is a weak and easily persuaded man, he still "loves her." However, I just couldn't interpret it as romance in any way after finding out he was behind the murders. Hearing you say that Ernest would have fully let his children and wife die in the explosion if not for the earache is so twisted. I think they should have left that part in the movie. I feel that by taking it out, they fail to capture the true horrors of what white men were willing to do. IDK, I feel as if some people watch the movie still having some sympathy for Ernest. Maybe its the fact that its his POV or that its Leo, but I would have wanted the film to fully explore and peel back the layers evil. But anyway, great review!

Yeah the movie definitely makes it seem more complicated, but really you can't claim to love someone while also abusing them and plotting against them. Glad you liked the review and thanks for commenting!

Exactly. Now, let's hear about all the atrocities Native Americans committed. Not just against white people but against each other. It will take many more films do do that.

@@damieo8139 I would and FINALLY we would get over this bizarre notion Native Americans were peaceful. They stole land more than anyone, they abducted women and FORCED them to pregnancy to increase their tribal numbers and they would go on rampages against white people, murdering women and children in the most vile ways imaginable. Let's tell those stories.

I haven’t read the book in about a year, but I remember Tom White being not only a major part of the story, but the hero of the story. The investigation was so complex and his clever tactics using undercovers, informants, and circumnavigating the corruption in the town was a major plot point. I was a bit surprised and annoyed that his role was not only minimized, but downplayed. Book wins.

You are right, that was how the book was. I read the script was originally written in that way, but they decide to change it to the villains perspective

I was disappointed by the movie overall. It's such an interesting story, but I felt like Scorsese just turned it into another Scorsese style gangster movie, and it was a chance for him to do something very different, like all of his best movies are. I would have loved to see more of Mollie's perspective and the Osage's culture. That aside, I was also let down by the technical aspects. And, in my opinion, you could cut 30/40 minutes out of it easily. 60 if I'm being an a-hole. Or use more of that time to focus on more interesting things, like Mollie. That said, I would't say it's a bad movie at all, and there are some great moments in it. Lily Gladstone is terrific, and the scene where she confronts her husband is incredible. But I wanted more of that. Congrats on 5k, Laura!!

I can't possibly imagine Martin Scorsese doing any film from a female's point of view. He's way too fixated on bad men and their "stories," although I can't say that evil has a "story." I liked the movie but it's hard to ignore the lack of perspective from the victims' view. But this is from the man who poisoned our culture with "The Wolf of Wall Street" which glorified horrible criminal behavior.

I think you should go back and rewatch Wolf of Wall Street. Scorsese took an autobiography where the author talks about how awesome and badass he is for 400 pages while ruining the lives of middle class folks, and portrays the guy as greedy, depraved, animalistic, and ruins his live and everyone around him. If you think he is praising him because it’s a black comedy, you missed the point. Pretty easy to do on a single view, because I did it as well. Worth a second watch with that in mind.

Just as I thought. I will not support Hollywood in making so much money through this tragedy. I will buy the book. Its obvious that they picked this time in history to push the race card on the big screen. Why didn't this movie get made in the 70s.? This is just another divisive tool to get people at each other's throats. I grew up in Okla. In the 60s and 70s. I never heard about this atrocity. It was kept quiet on purpose and it was released at this time on purpose as well.
