Hi Michele, lovely to hear from you! Happy New Year! Thankyou so much for your kind words. I am totally loving making these pieces, and so thrilled to finally feel like I can make again. Hopefully when I get my mini slab roller I can get back to other shapes too, but I think I will beaking a lot of coil bowls this year, love the way you can stay true to the clay but experiment in a big way on the inside. Soooo great to hear from you 😊

Hi Jan, Happy New year! Thankyou for your kind comments. The fish were jointed in that each pieces moved individually but the glaze fused them together, the only way to do it would be to make each piece individually on the bead rack and the wire together, it's possible but much longer winded for such a small pendant and would have to charge more for it which might put people off. For a personal piece it would be worth it though ❤️

Hi Nancy, thankyou so much, I will do best to say how many coats as a general rule if it is one glaze it will be 3 generous coats, if 2 glazes it will be 3 of each, if it is several glazes It is usually 1 of each. I don't really keep careful records and my glazing is haphazard and spur of the moment, I will try to be better😅

Gorgeous work! Really love the glaze combos. I also have a Nabertherm Top 45. Do you use cones to check your temps? I was firing to 1200°C with a 10 minute hold thinking that was cone 6 but then I used witness cones and turns out I was getting cone 7 with that. I'd love to hear your firing schedule if you wouldn't mind sharing? I'm assuming you're not using the preset schedules on the kiln. Do you use the preset bisque firing schedule or did you change it?
@ceramicsbyjulia8552
@ceramicsbyjulia8552 6 ай бұрын
Hi Emma, thankyou for your kind comments. I don't use cones but I know my kiln fires slightly hot. I do 1190 I think my schedule is 0 to 500 in 3 hours and then 500 to 1190 as fast as it can and then 30 min hold at the top, over all it usually takes about 8 hours or so. I have the vent open upto 500 then close it. For bisque I use the preset bisque I think it goes to 1060? Or something like that. Which I think is an 04. I love my Nabertherm, but its the only kiln I've had so I have no other comparison, how long have you had yours? 😊

@@ceramicsbyjulia8552 thanks for the reply! I only got mine 6 months ago and I love and fear her in equal measure 😂. I'm very new to pottery. I know there's lots of learning in failure but they're pricey lessons so I'm trying to understand my kiln as best I can. I find the cones so confusing. There seems to be several different temps for each cone so it's hard to know what to aim for. Then there's heat work to consider. It's all a bit overwhelming. I'm considering doing an online course on running a kiln. I found a UK based Potter that runs them. I'm just wondering if you're not getting good results with Amaco celadons on buff clay because the kiln is too hot. I read that a 10 minute hold at the end can bring the temp up half a cone. My 1200° with a 10 min hold should really have been a cone 6 but like I said, it was actually cone 7. When I brought the temp down a bit I got different colour results with Amaco glazes.

@@ceramicsbyjulia8552 I'd also love to hear how you get on with your new slab roller. It's on my 'want' list.
@ceramicsbyjulia8552
@ceramicsbyjulia8552 6 ай бұрын
Hi Emma, yes I think celedons don't like it too hot but buff clay changes the colours of a lot of glazes compared to white clay, most test tiles on the front of glaze bottles are done on white which gives its truest colour. Buff or any other clay gives a different result as there are things added to the clay and these affect the composition of the glaze. I don't use cones and just go with heat work because the cones can be different in different parts of your kiln too. The community kiln at the art centre I go to some Tuesdays fires to 1210 with a 30 hold at 100° per hour, so long and slow, bisque to 1000 at 100 per hour too. They don't use cones either but I feel they do over fire so if I want something to go even hotter than mine I might fire it there. Pottery is a lifetime of learning I am only 2.5 years in and hardly did anything last year as I moved and was waiting for my mini studio and my health was not great ( I have M.E) I totally get how the kiln can feel overwhelming I had only been doing it 7 months when I got my kiln and really didn't have a clue other than what I saw at the art centre and on KZfaq. I have just fumbled my way through and learned as I have went along. As you can see from previous videos there have been tes where I have had disasters 🤣 I think cone is really just an indicator of heat work, they just give an idea. Have you watched Earth Nation on KZfaq? Don't gives quite a lot of help on getting to grips with kilns etc If you want to chat further or need any help, on Instagram you can look me up Ceramics_byJulia I don't use it much but it is good for chats. 😊
