It has been used before. One example was Hit lers claim of a "unprovoked attack" from Poland. That propaganda narrative was the basis of the German attack on Poland. President Bush Sr used the Iraq "unprovoked" invasion of Kuwait to start the Gulf War, even though Sadam was given assurances by a female US diplomat that the US wouldn't act. If I understand correctly Ukraine shells Donbas separatists and Donbas separatists shell Ukraine. This is an awful situation, but why would this be considered a provocation to cause Russia invasion? It was an ongoing sad story for many years. Looks like a total red herring to me. Maybe people in Donbas (or majority of them) felt themselves more Russians than Ukrainians and wanted to separate from Ukraine? And Ukraine would not allow that (understandably - we in US would not allow a state line New Mexico to succeed if they would feel more Mexican than American). Therefore, nothing is that easy.

@@randalldrn Russia didn’t capture any gas or oil in the Ukraine, because Ukrainian fields are small and are in the western side of the country. Almost all the oil in the Ukrainian industry was russian - directly from Russia or transit from Belorussia. More about gas, even for re-export.
