Welcome back!!
Raise your hand is jiu jitsu is one of the hardest things you've ever done... am I right??? Forgetting moves we learn in class is the ultimate struggle, but that's all part of the challenge :)
Here are a few tips to help you remember the moves your coach teaches and some of my other ramblings :)
Thank you too all of my wonderful subscribers who reach out and ask GREAT questions that are so helpful for every one else!

Thanks so much for answering my question, Kim, I really appreciate it 😊 when you suggested taking notes, I ran and grabbed an old journal, designated it the Jiu Jitsu journal and began writing down what moves I did in class today 🤣 I feel like this will really help me ❤️

We all feel this way...especially during the first year. Then things start to click and get really fun. And, even after that we periodically have days when we feel like this again, lol. I've learned sooo much that I now use in all aspects of life. I've learned to slow down (hard to do), cut myself slack (like I would for my best friend), and appreciate when people tell me how to do something better...that last one was maybe the hardest for me. It only happened after I started saying "thank you" even when inside I felt frustrated and a little defensive. It does get fun once these things are in place and you have had time and reps enough to learn some basics. Great question!!!

Excellent video and even better advice. Just started bjj myself (only a few weeks in) and I fully intend on following these tips. Thanks so much!

This was so helpful! I'm only a few weeks in and every time I roll I can't seem to remember anything I learned. I think writing this down will help a ton, I also have a friend in bjj and we are going to practice every technique we learned maybe once a week, to help us stop forgetting. There are some moves I learned in the beginning I've never used since, so it's so easy to forget

I'm soo happy this was helpful for you. The extra practice is definitely helpful too! The more drilling, the better. :)

Thanks, Kim. I appreciate this. I started BJJ a month and a half ago and I absolutely love it! However, my main difficulty at this point is getting the techniques to STICK--everything goes in one ear and out the other. This was very helpful, I will be applying these tips.

I’ve been thinking about starting Jiu Jitsu for a long time now but I was always intimidated by the idea of actually doing it. You are one of my main inspirations and a reason why I had the courage to start. Had my first class few days ago and it was amazing. I hope this is the start of a long BJJ journey. Thank you for you videos and keep doing what you do! Xxx

Solid advice as always. Though I disagree somewhat about retaining stuff down the road. At some point moves all fall into certain categories and are just modifications on a base movement. So once you've learned those base movements it's all extrapolation from there. Certainly it takes a lot more than a few months to reach anywhere near that point. And retention/understanding does not at all mean you've mastered that move. Find a good Uke and you'll learn moves much quicker and with more retention. Your partner should be starting with no resistance and helping you, then slowly bring in resistance so you get a feel for what it actually feels like. Also means you don't go from 0% to 100% when you transition to hitting it while rolling. Ask questions! Only time I get irritated with someone struggling with a move is if they are making stupid or thoughtless motions that are hurting me. Smacking me in the face repeatedly with their elbow or whatever. Other than that type of stuff, ask away. Nothing better than seeing that light bulb moment for someone when the move finally clicks.

Okay now that I am a couple of weeks into attending Gi classes I have a question for you, my boxing coach is attending Jiu Jitsu classes and has a background in Judo. She is incredibly intense when we grapple at the end of class. I feel like I don't know anything yet and it basically is all her rotating through the small group of girls just submitting them roughly in a short amount of time. I don't feel like I get the chance to learn anything, I am just turned off from wanted to grapple with her at all. Any advice? I did ask her last night to go light basically and came to the realization that probably isn't possible for her.

As a purple belt now; is drilling/rolling with white belts annoying?
@kimberlykinch
@kimberlykinch Жыл бұрын
Nope! I always took the opportunity to drill with them to help them learn. But now, it depends on the white belt lol. After my injury, I'll be very skeptical on the white belts I roll with.
