It's fascinating to learn that the Ward or Mac an Bhaird surname translates to "son of the bard," especially considering the rich tradition of bards and Druids in Celtic mythology. It's amazing to think about figures like Merlin, who was both a bard and a Druid. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the video. Thank you!

In the story of Culwch and Olwen, the knights are sent on a quest to gather implements for a ritual hair cutting. I don't remember where I encountered it this week, but something about how boys received their first haircut as a rite of passage. They were sent out in a group of their peers to accomplish some task. They wouldn't be let back into the village until this was accomplished and then they would receive their 'first haircut'. There are many such rites and practices such as fostering that would make great topics which I would love to learn more about.

We have a lot of traditions around our hair. Similar to that, a boy's last haircut takes place just before he becomes a man, during his adulthood trials. We have trials we go through to be considered adults. I would love to do more videos on the myths and the actual traditions

I wrote a paper in college about the existence of King Arthur. It was quite fascinating just how many cultures had a story of this legendary man. I got an A on the paper. When I went to the Professor's office to pick up my paper he was packing up his office. He told me that he was retiring. I inquired about what he was going to do with his book collection. He said I could have them. I was like a kid in a candy store! I went home with over 50 books on not just King Arthur but on mythology of pretty much all Europe. I would enjoy anything you do in regards to the Once and Future King.

We are NOT Celts! No one in history, neither Caesar nor Tacitus, nor any other of the Greek or Roman historians or writers have ever referred to the Celts or Kelts as inhabitants of Britain or of Hibernia. It was not until 1706, when a Mr. Jones published an English translation of Abbe Pezron's book issued three years earlier and entitled; ‘Antiquite de la Nation et de la Langue des Celtes’ that it was first mentioned. Mr. Jones published his English translation of this under the title of ‘Antiquities of Nations’. In this fantastical narrative, more particularly about the Celts or Gauls, they were assumed to be the same people as our ancient Britons in Pezron’s musings. How this came to be adopted into the British narrative from Jones’ book and subsequently into the minds of British and Irish people, and how it changed even the knowledge of their own identities and their histories is a mystery to me, but this grave error and this long-running bit of fiction has had a profound effect over those 315 years. We are just not Celts, and we never have been. We are and were Brythonic, and that makes ALL the difference imho.
@BlackDragonTavern
@BlackDragonTavern 4 ай бұрын
I think a lot of it has to do with linguistic and ethnological evidence. Early inhabitants of Ireland being said to have come from Spain, and would have shared ancestors with persons from the Kingdom or territory of Galli. Given the similarities to the languages of the Scottish, Manx and Irish peoples. You are correct, broadly speaking, that the Britons were not referred to as Celts until the 19th century. However, the general consensus among academics seems to be that Brythonic peoples are a specific group of persons from the Celtic Language branch of Indo-European languages, and are generally regarded as Celts. Though there is an important distinction that while all Brythonic peoples are considered Celts, not all Celts are Brythonic. I do think that in detailed discussions that distinction is very important. As a lot of the finer details tend to get wiped away when we paint with broad brushes.
