Documentary about George VI and his wife Elizabeth, King and Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions. The story of Albert (his name before he became King) and Elizabeth, is one of goodness growing into greatness. In a short reign, just 14 years, they created an ideal of the British Royal Family. This documentary examines the legacy they built, a legacy that lives on in the way that their eldest daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, rules today.

+Nancy Benefiel The exact words I think were: "The children will not go without me. I will not leave without the king. The king will stay, come what may". That was in Part 5, about 3:01 into the video. But I agree, she had courage. I like her. I do believe, though, with the deaths of Queens Victoria and Elizabeth (consort to King George), that the golden age of royalty is no more.

I ever remember drawing a smile from His Majesty as our paths crossed in Windsor Great Park in the later '40's when I, age 11, pointed and shrieked "It's the King . . it's the KIng!" then immediately recovering my manners and bowing and looking up and being rewarded with that smile. Other Royal memories and local anecdotes only confirm His Majesty's devotion to duty, solid values and concern and love for the people. We were so . . .so....very fortunate.

Dreadnaught The king was so noble. He was a much better king than his older brother would’ve been. Even king George V said that Bertie had more guts in him than all of his sons put together. Still king George VI was nervous when he first took the throne. He was a quick study and learned the ropes within a year or two . He appears to be a handsome man and more handsome than his older brother, & without having affairs of other men’s wives. It’s been good to see these videos and a close loving family. Sadly King George the sixth did not have that upbringing, as his father was very strict and raised them like a drill sergeant.

Steven Torrey that is true. Had it not been for cowardly king Edward & his charms and his love for a narcissistic divorcee, King George VI would not have been. King Edward would not have been able to hold the country together in one piece during World War II and beyond. Bertie, Prince Albert and future King George VI, was in the Royal Navy during World War I & fought along side many. Edward, the heir, was sheltered & preferred affairs with married women. King George VI was much better prepared to carry his country during the Second World War & afterwards. I admire him and his wife for that & I’m American. I wonder to this day if the British people still continue to call Americans “ the Yanks”. I thought that was so funny when I watched it in one of these documentary series.

Stoic to the end. What dignified people. Serving the public, decent, with a sense of duty. Not like the Social Media Narcissists of today. They saw themselves as role models for people. No one appreciates what WWII was. My mother lived through it. Everyone was so traumatized, esp the children who lived through the shelling, rationing, constant terror, disruption of lives, losing everything, death of people you knew, all wildlife and pets destroyed... so much horror. The people who lived through it like my parents, were tough, resilient, and had strong values. I miss that.

With so many who have died from COVID, the world still has not learned enough that we are all the same and taking care of one another no matter our race, creed or color is what it’s all about while we try to survive on this planet!

Edward made several mistakes. But he should have obtained his advice through back channels. Had he truly wanted both crown and love he merely needed to wait, let himself be crowned and anointed, then taken his girlfriend off to France and secretly gotten married there. That would have forced the government to make a concession. As a crowned and anointed king, the government could not have removed him by any way other than execution. They would not have dared. Once married to his love, he could not be forced from her. It would have been a de facto Morganatic marriage, Elizabeth would still have eventually become queen. But her father would likely not have reigned and he would probably have lived at least a few more years. The Church of England may not have recognized the marriage, but it would have no choice to have accepted the king.
@pamelaparizo
@pamelaparizo 7 жыл бұрын
I can assure you the government would not have made a concession. If that had occurred, the PM would've resigned as he indicated he would, creating a Constitutional Crisis. That is why Edward decided not to force the issue. You have to understand that the monarch rules by right of Parliament and the people. Monarchs therefore do a lot of things they might not otherwise because their purpose is to preserve the monarchy and not to create anti-monarchy sentiments. A morganatic marriage would not have worked back then. I believe when he does ascend the throne that Charles will renege on his and create Camilla queen. There has never been a Princess Consort or any similar style, and I don't think they will start now.

Nobody can blame the Queen Mother for harboring bitterness towards Edward VIII. He went on to live a luxurious carefree life while her husband who had never been groomed to be King had the burden dropped on him. George never shirked his duty and was a gallant King. They were the King and Queen that Britain needed to defeat the German Reich. The unwanted kingship shortened his life.

For a prince who never expected, or wanted, to be king, George VI did an absolutely bang on job. He had more courage than his brother, Edward. The abdication was a huge favour to Great Britain. Edward would have made a terrible king, who wanted all the perks and benefits of his position without expending any effort in his royal duties. Wallis, with her catty, snipey derision for any woman who was not like her, would have made an atrocious queen, with her silly arriviste ambitions and complete lack of integrity. Worse, she would have alienated the British people with her supercilious delusions of grandeur.

What a beautiful man and woman the King and Queen. One feels it for him, King George VI and his queen, even if one is tarred with disrcimination in the right of Royalty and its inheritance. God Bless, Love, Guide, Heal and Protect us all. Amen 💖

Growing up I always wondered what rich, pampered people could possibly know about sacrifice. This family knew all too well. And Prince Phillip. He came along and was selfless enough to be able to do the same. Just realized both my parents are from the kingdom or commonwealth. Kinda proud of that.

A very good, indeed, an excellent documentary, very well written and narrated, for which grateful and appreciative thanks. I find the closing appraisals very moving and confess but unashamedly brought to tears. Thank you again.

Wonderful, well documented series. Excellent commentary by anchor. The king & queen were made for each other, performed their duties admirably. Cometh the hour cometh the man.

seems the best monarch are frequently the ones who never expect it or view it as a right but as a duty.

This was the first video in this series suggested to me, and I didn’t see where it said Part 8. After it was over I was all, “That was really short, and didn’t really say much about their relationship.” But now it makes sense watching them all in order. 😂

Gosh after so many years of marriage they still adored each other. Notice their gentle way of communicating. So sad her soul had to drag her body for more than half century after his death.
