I saw the Queen Mother as a socialite, clothes horse, and eager to show off her lavish lifestyle and possessions even during a so-called “picnic.” I also thought it quite selfish of her to run up bills to support her lavishness and self-comfort when she actually wasn’t paying for it. She certainly took advantage of all the perks that came with her marriage, and she relished every bit of it. Not saying I wouldn’t have done that same if in her shoes, but how “strong” does one have to be with a huge complement of servants seeing to your every need? She loved being in public and having people see her, so that was no great work for her.
