The First "Nowell"
Choir and congregation
The words and music both come from the English West Country. This arrangement is by Sir David Willcocks.
Although the BBC receives complaints about misspelling 'Nowell', this is in fact the correct spelling of the English version of the French Noël. The word is either a general Christmas expression of joy, or more technically, a non-liturgical popular verse song.

The First Noel the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields as they lay, keeping their sheep, On a cold winter's night that was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star Shining in the east beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. And by the light of that same star Three wise men came from country far; To seek for a king was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went. This star drew nigh to the northwest, O'er Bethlehem it took it rest, And there it did both stop and stay Right over the place where Jesus lay. Then entered in those wise men three Full reverently upon their knee, and offered there in his presence Their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense. Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord; That hath made heaven and earth of naught, And with his blood mankind hath bought

My favourite Christmas hymn, when I was a child in Africa, everything was so magical, during this period of my life. I know what you mean. But... life is actual MORE "magical" than our hearts even desire, as the Christmas truth says, for the Christmas message tells us: GOD BECAME MAN. What is more "magical" than THAT!? AND... it's TRUE! Christianity is, in the English Englishman C. S. Lewis' words, "myth become REALITY." Or, to quote Tolkien, Christianity is the GREATEST "fairy tale", for it has ALL. the elements of the BEST fairy tale, and... IT'S TRUE! Merry Christmas, my friend. This is all true. And, if we stay close to Christ and His Church, we'll get to heaven. It's true.

plato socrates yes, and it would be but I'm scared of flying. My ear canals pipped like crazy even though I chewed gum and put cups over my ears. It was years ago but I never forgot. So I hope they visit my parish church in America someday. That church has a men and boys choir, by the way. I feel like I am in England when I hear them.

plato socrates it's on mine but airplane travel is "ruff" (pun intended) on my ears. Not surplice or cassock, but ruff. The best choir in the world in the most beautiful church in the world. I have never seen a fan vaulted ceiling in person, just in pics; it is stunning. And those large, Tudor arched windows are as beautiful as the fan vaulted ceiling. Sir David's arrangements are THE BEST. My favorite hymn tune is FOREST GREEN. I'm glad FOREST GREEN has year-round lyrics (O Spirit of the Living God, I Sing the Almighty Power of God, O Lord of Life to Thee We Lift) so I don't have to wait until Christmas to hear it.

plato socrates by the way, it was only to Florida from New York, that flight when my ears pipped and popped like crazy. (It was decades ago and I still remember it.) I have never been out of the East Coast, much less overseas, but that flight seemed like it was as long as an overseas flight. Maybe I should forget the gum and use cups *and* earplugs! I do want to see the KCC someday, and visit Leith Hill Place (where Rafe Vaughan Williams lived for a long time), and see Princess Diana's memorial garden in London.

Hudson Bailey p.s. Do you know the English version of O Little Town of Bethlehem? That tune (FOREST GREEN by Rafe Vaughan Williams) is the best ever. I listen to it several times a day every day. By the way, please subscribe to my channels, both the old one and this one (my old channel is Claire ForestGreenOrganGeek Dixon). There are lots of videos of me playing the organ, both the real thing and my pretend organ (electronic keyboard), "Forrester".

ABSOLUTELY! The "American" version becomes commonplace and sort of drags where "Forest Green" draws the "Keats" out of myself, "How lovely thy VERDURE." Are we not grateful for KINGS. Yes, I'd savor your ivory.

+Thomas Petrone I'm an atheist, love carols. Just a story, and lovely music to go with it. What's wrong with that? Peace.

mattthepie I am a pick-and-choose Christian, and not even English. But I just love love love English carols and hymns! I became an Anglophile in 1994 because of Sir David's arrangements. After that, (until 3 years ago when I got my iPhone) I bought every King's College Choir CD with Sir David's carol arrangements on it. And the year I unofficially converted to Episcopalian (from Catholic) I elevated FOREST GREEN from "in my Top Ten Favorites" to #1. FOREST GREEN has been my favorite for six years, and KINGSFOLD, my second favorite. I'm proud to be Episcopalian and an Anglophile.

WE SANG THIS TODAY!!!!😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄 I was thrilled because I love it, and today is Sir David's birthday! I sent a balloon to heaven for him because his arrangements and descants are the best. They made an Anglophile out of me 24 years ago.👏👍👏👍👏👍 I loooove the King's College Choir, too. They are the best choir in the world!

This carol is in D major. As an amateur musician and choir member, I notice and enjoy four part harmony especially the little details. Great descant (with a soaring top A). Phenomenal major sixth - descant D and melody F#!

クリスマスウィークだけに限らず。年中聴きたくなる。素晴らしいケンブリジコーラスです。蝋燭の光に照らされる教会や人々の光景とドームに響き渡るハーモニーにいつも癒されています。
