I love how even the Wikipedia page for King's Quest 5 points out that Cedric only ever does one useful thing in the entire game, and that it's inadvertent.

They did Cedric so wrong. Barn owls are powerful birds of prey. They are cautious enough, but certainly not as timid and cowardly as Cedric. A better mechanic for him would have been to make him an adjustable character. Cedric could literally have been the initial difficulty. Based on that he could have given anywhere from strong to weak hints making him useful.

NO WAY!!! The French version *was* unwinnable!!! My 30 year old inferiority complex - gone. I played this game for so long as a kid, raw, no walkthrough, no Internet, no one to help and it always stalled after I turned into a rabbit against Mordak. I knew I was so close to the end. I feel so vindicated now. It was unwinnable. Because it was the French version. I have to call my dad.

I had beaten the original french floppy disk version in the nineties on a Pentium Computer with Windows 95, so it was possible with the original version. But I've never completed the game I had downloaded on "Abandonware-Lost Treasures". Maybe that version has a problem or is not compatible with our modern computer/ or Dosbox ?

I'm also from Québec and King's Quest V french version was also the first King's Quest I have played! And I didn't have the manual so I couldn't pass the copy protection but I remember that I found a way to skip it with the witch hut hahaha.... but sadly... at the end of the game, when Graham transform into a rabbit.... I couldn't finish the game... the rabbit animation was in an infinite loop and the game soft lock there... it was so frustrating because it was literally the last few clicks before the end! I had to wait for the collection edition to finally see the end ;)

Man, watching this really reminded me what a beautiful, handcrafted feel this game has to it. Yeah, some of the puzzles make no sense, and it is completely possible to get stuck in the game with no way to progress, but they had to sell some sweet strategy guides. Actually I remember when my cousin bought this, the guy at the store was like, "No, you *really* need the guide, you won't be able to finish the game without it". Anyway, this really tempts me to start looking for that mythical skip.
@Blackadder75
@Blackadder75 2 жыл бұрын
I played all these games without guide, but I did use help, but it came from magazines. yes old skool paper magazines. People would actually write letters with help requests, waiting 1-2 months for the answer to be punished. Meanwhile we would just play other games. Around 1991 I also got a modem and could call BBS and they often had walkthroughs, but that was cheating. But by that time I was so good at Sierra games that I could often finish most of them on my own (and the point and click versions were easier) LSL5 and QFG3 were my favourites. Sadly I have to admit that I pirated most of them, as my family was not wealthy enough to buy many games at such high prices.

47:40 Might be because the game is doing a check of your progress. There are instances of speedrunning where a game will (at some point) "lock" you into position as it checks what script it needs to run to trigger the next part of the story. Since you skip a lot of events, it needs to update and in the process, becomes unsure what to actually do - so instead of checking one single thing, it checks everything. Checkmark, inventory, status, key events, Graham's position, Graham's current map and whether the next event can trigger or not. There's also the protection code factor and a myriad of other reasons. It might not be these specific reasons and that the code simply hiccups caused by speedrunning, but I hope that gives some insight on what could've caused him to freeze like that.

@BrowncoatFairy
@BrowncoatFairy 2 жыл бұрын
i dunno, i think if you're not already inherently nostalgic for the series, they're really hard to enjoy. I grew up playing them, but from a gameplay standpoint, they are objectively pretty terrible. So much of it is deciphering unfair, illogical puzzles, while there are SO MANY SCREENS you need to enter, but which will randomly and instantly kill you for no reason other than bad RNG. I distinctly remember when LucasArts came along with Maniac Mansion between KQ 3 and 4 -- it was a smack-yourself-on-the-forehead revelatory moment for ten year old me: "oh my god, Kings Quest games suck!" Maniac Mansion fixed so many problems with KQ games that I didn't even realize existed -- stupid staircases of death, terrible text parsing, frequent unwinnable states, random deaths due to no fault of the player, and puzzles that had zero logic whatsoever and were practically impossible without a strategy guide. In LucasArts games, you could still die, but it took work. You had to do something INCREDIBLY dumb (such as steal Weird Ed's Hamster, explode it in the microwave, and then give the exploded hamster parts back to Weird Ed). Those games didn't punish you with death for every attempt at exploration, or every incorrect guess at reading the programmer's mind the way Kings Quest games did. The punishment for being wrong was simply you would not progress. You'd be stuck, but you could keep trying other things. Meanwhile, KQ would nuke you on the spot and then make fun of you. Or worse, not tell you that you screwed up until 6 hours later when you get to the end and realize you can't win. if you're looking at getting into retro adventure games, i'd recommend Maniac Mansion, Zac McKracken, or the Monkey Island series. They're just a lot more fun overall. And that's coming from someone whose earliest, fondest memories are of working my way through the first 4 Kings Quest games.

It was really interesting to see how the strats developed over time, especially as many strats seem to have massive trade offs in the sense of 'saves 30 seconds here but loses 25 seconds there etc.' Also intriguing to see the challenges that arrived just running an old DOS game accurately. I really suggest you do not play this game. Maybe look into the Quest for Glory games? 2 has a (free, fan-made) remake that should be fantastic (included graphics updated to hand-painted VGA), and I have fond memories of 4. 4 has the same hand-painted style as this game. I should note that QfG4 is a much darker game than this one, leaning towards horror and mystery. The graphics reflect this. If you remain interested in KQ games, just... not this one. I think KQ6 is usually considered one of the best. KQ5 is one of the worst.

I think introducing 'Cedric' as a way to help children and casual players to finish the game was actually a great idea and innovative for the time. I think it could have been a great addition if he was less in your face and not such a drama queen. Maybe in an 'easy mode' he could continue to state the obvious and offer more help to solve puzzles, and in 'hard mode' he could keep quiet unless he was doing something useful and necessary to advance the plot. I respect that they were trying something new, and made mistakes they learned from. Of course some play testing with the target audience could have made Sierra come to the realization that he was nails on a chalk board.

Thanks for the high praise! I'd love to do as many of these as I can. The challenge is finding the games where the speedruns tell a good story. The next big video is probably going to be KQVI, which has a lot of runners, glitches, and discoveries made throughout the years. A lot of the Sierra games, as great as they are, are underplayed as speedruns. For those, there's not much of a story besides, "Then, a year later, someone else ran the game, doing the exact same thing, just a little faster." Still, I look forward to seeing what I can find. I know davidtki and mrprmiller have done a ton of work on the Quest for Glory games, so there might be something there. The Monkey Island runners are also really active, so eventually something from that series might be on the table.

I still remember when my dad and I were playing this game in like 1995, with no outside help whatsoever. Stuck in Mordack’s castle, we were standing in the library clicking helplessly on every single object wondering what the F to do next… …when suddenly the 2mins was up, Mordack appeared in the doorway, but instead of walking in and murdering us he went straight to sleep. My dad and I looked at each other and realized we had just beaten the game. And that’s why I still play these at age 36.

Honestly, I used to scoff at the idea of speedrunning adventure games, as they seemed like simply doing the same repetitive movements for every run, and the only real speed gain being how well you could wrangle the cursor. But I never considered Sierra's games, and after seeing both this and the King's Quest speedrunning video, my mind has been thoroughly blown by all the different RNG factors and ways the emulation has come into play. That, and your amazing way to exposit the information made for two well entertaining videos. Looking forward to more of these, would love to see one on maybe a Space Quest game.

Wait a second...Paw actually went back to _speedrun_ this game? And got a WORLD RECORD doing it?! His retrospective LP of this game (back around 2008, when he was still on TGWTG) was literally the first video Let's Play I ever watched! There's something unexpectedly and inexplicably delightful about that. 😊

King's Quest V was either the first or second adventure game I ever played as a kid (I still can't remember the timeline exactly), so this series has a special place in my heart. I'm glad you enjoyed looking back.

I've been watching a few of your videos, and I love them. I really like this documentary style of video capturing the history of these adventure game speedruns. It's a fascinating area of gaming I've never thought much of, but these videos have shown me that it's pretty interesting. As a side note, I used to watch Pawdugen when he used to make musical movie reviews way back when, and played through King's Quest V. I miss those reviews. I wish he had done more of them.

Another great video. I remember we had KQ5 on floppy, but never finished it, and at first I couldn't recall why we'd left it incomplete. But seeing it played out fully, I can guess. We weren't a family for walkthroughs, and I have no doubt one of these puzzles stopped us dead. (Peas? Really?) Also, the game's fancy new walk icon always amuses me more than it should... my eyes insist that there's a tiny Graham following the regular-sized Graham around!

I'm loving your channel. Kings Quest V was one of the first pc games I ever played and I have such fond memories of it. It was brutal and left me stumped as a kid many, many times. I think my dad might have even called a help line for this game when we were stuck. Then when I played the game as an adult and used a guide, I realized it's a quick adventure to finish when you know what you're doing so the completion times here aren't surprising. If I had more time on my hands I think it would be quite fun to speed run this and other old PC adventure games. On a side note, I didn't know the game had voices until playing this game much later as an adult. It was such a trip to hear the characters talking, like I played a remaster of the game. I also remember the game coming on multiple floppies, maybe 5 or more disks, and the only sound my 386 had was the beeps of the pc speaker. Even with these limitations the game was still so enchanting and enthralling.

My experience was very similar. We played the floppy version and I didn't hear the voice acting until I was an adult. Looking back, the game has a lot of objectively bad puzzle design, but I loved (and still have a soft spot) for the world and its characters. I think it's a beautiful game.

A large part of Kings Quest game play was looking up how to solve puzzles in a walkthrough book that you would buy separately. Because the internet wasn't so much a thing at the time. And because the mind of Roberta Williams is a strange and mysterious place.
