I love the way he emphasised the word “Protector” in “Protector of the Realm”, and in this scene he excelled at that duty in both functions: he did his best to protect the realm from the inner turmoil that threatens to tear it apart, and protect his daughter one last time.

This scene is a poetic callout to when Balerion chose Viserys as his rider, where the great old beast used his last energy to fly around Kings Landing three times as if to show people that he thinks Viserys deserves to be king, and die less than a year later. The old sickly king spent his last energy to take Rhaenyra to his last court to strengthen her legitimacy, only to die the night after. Beautiful writing.

IIRC, Daemon helping him was unscripted (I could be wrong). But it was such a wonderful moment. It feels like Daemon always considered Viserys to be a weak man, and was frustrated to be the spare, and passed over in the line of succession. In this moment though, I think he (1) was able to remember the love that he did have for his brother, and (2) recognize that his brother was a stronger man then he gave him credit for.

He's willing to sacrifice personal glory (doesn't ever wage war himself), sacrifice his reputation (protecting Daemon, Rhenera's shenanigans), and his body (as in this scene) to try to keep his family peace and his daughter happy. I think it is wonderful too. They may have quarrelled and even hurt one another but they all did it over the years with the purpose of protecting one another and here when they had to stand united against everyone else and demonstrate how much they love each other, they did it. Rhaenyra stood for her family, Vyserys for her daughter and Daemon for both of them. Best scene in the show so far to be honest but it is really difficult to say, there have been so many great scenes although this was the most moving one by far and the season is not even over LOL, the last two episodes are supposed to be the best and are yet to air. this is probably an homage to his last ride with Balerion. The dragon was weak, old, and dying when young Viserys was presented to him for a ride. It was said that it took a lot of strength for the old dragon to fly with pride and courage and take his last flight with a Targaryen on his back. Balerion died shortly after that and Viserys never took another dragon ever since. This scene parallels that moment and means that Viserys himself is a "true, proud, and noble Dragon" himself.

The camera work making short distances **feel** very far, and few steps **feel* very high, was perfection. Not to mention the acting : looking down when walking, then looking up every few steps to gauge how much of an effort is still to come. That pause, bracing at the bottom of the stairs for the next effort. Catching his breath after throwing himself in the chair. And the music, played on every thing we ever heard since the GOT pilot and the king's arrival at winterfell.

Anybody who has faced sikness and death among his/her relatives cannot be but moved by his performance. His grasping the last sparks of strenght, mouth open, face deformed by pain, the heavy breathing and moaning. And those feverish eyes looking, hanging on the beloveds. lt's heartbreaking and beautiful.

I took care of my grandma, who had dementia, for 4 years until she passed. Seeing someone decay, physically and mentally, over the years is heartbreaking. Viserys being delirious, having difficulty talking and moving, and moaning from pain brought back some painful and powerful memories. I teared up three times this episode. Considine deserves an award, his performance of Viserys and his decay this season was masterful.

King Viserys, one of my favorite characters in all of Game of Thrones. Not a perfect man, made mistakes as we all do. But a man of loyalty integrity, especially pertaining to his family. Tried to do his best what he thought was right and fair. He was too honorable for that world.

Throughout the entire episode whenever he's sitting or in bed, Rhaenyra and Daemon are usually on his left side (the side of his face that is healthier) while Alicent and the Greens are usually on his right side (the side that is rotting).

And it almost makes the Greens more hidden in the grass in what they do, they are secretive about their plotting and don’t care about Viserys or his needs in the process so they sit on the side of his body that can’t see them for what they are, hiding in plain sight. And the Blacks are the social pariahs and make no secret of it so they sit where Viserys sees them and can interact with them as his family grows, so he can be a little happier whereas most of the Blacks barely interacted with him when he was bedridden.

This one scene is has more cinematographic weight and emotional impact than the entirety of seasons 5-8 of GoT. There’s an interview with Paddy where he says he doesn’t usually watch his own acting, but his wife made him watch his own death and he burst into tears because he looked exactly like his father. Seeing Viserys struggling to reach, at the back of the room, step by step, the throne that destroyed his family and made him so sick; taking a brief look at the woman who believed she had all the power and basically telling her father "Fuck you, I'm still alive and I'm still here to protect my daughter"; before the final climb to the throne looking at his ONLY daughter to find motivation and seeing her IDENTICAL to his late wife, perpetually pregnant due to his duties as king, so much that he has to stop and look at her one more second; and finally accepting the help of his brother, who at last understands everything he has suffered, recognizes him as King and puts all misunderstandings behind him with two words: "Come on". Just chills... What a masterpiece.

That's what I love so much about Martin's universe: not big wars, big dragons, big fights etc. Sometimes the most dramatic moments are moments like this: Viseyrs walking to the throne. No big special effects, no epic score with horns and drums, no "who's more strong cast more fireballs deliver more blows per second etc." just drama, and to quote Faulkner's favorite quote of Martin "the human heart in conflict with itself"
