Disclaimer: though I speak against the rhetoric of the mental health movement as a whole, I do not deny the cases in which people need professional help for mental problems.
Also, the whole thing about my server being taken over by atheists is just for the sake of the story of their series. My Minecraft server has always had lots of people on it, but the history of it has been a mix of reality and fictional lore. However, this story represents the real world, which has been taken over by atheists, meaning we need to spread God's Kingdom in our lives.

And there’s a difference between the self love we’re talking about here and the self love in the sense that we recognize that God loves us and try to align our self-image with how God sees us

One thing I hear a lot is about the concept of self forgiveness. This is definitely a man centered doctrine. I'm wondering what your perspective is on this.

Only God can forgive our sins and true repentance comes from examining our conscience and being truly remorseful of our sinful acts. As catholics we believe ordained priest have the power (just as the all the apostles had) to absolve us of our sins thru God's graces

If you mean by self love self obsession then I agree. However, for me a healthy self love is not bad. If you constantly try to help out others as much as you can without considering your own limitations you might burnout and then everybody else have to care for you and eventually you need actually more help back now than you have initially given. Also I think that people who work a lot for others during the year might need some time off for self love to do what they like at some point to recover and be ready to help again.

My thought is that a proper self love comes when you align your view of self with God’s view of you. God loves us all immensely so we can recognize this and love ourselves but God also sees our sins and we must also see these and acknowledge this so that we can ask God for forgiveness and improve with the help of his grace

16:09 The bible teaches, after all, that sin cannot give us happiness. It can only give us pleasure, and it is foolish to conflate true happiness and pleasure as the same.

Selfish Love is Unnatural, Self Love is Natural, & Selfless Love is Supernatural... If you do your own commandment to yourself, then you really love who you are who is yourself, for Christ Himself had said, if we really love Him, we will do what He had commanded us to do... And all of His commandments were directed to these two greatest commandments: First, "You shall Love the LORD your God with all of your mind, with all of your heart, with all of your soul, & with all of your strength, might or spirit..." And the Second is also like IT, "You shall Love your neighbors as yourself..." Loving yourself is natural but Loving your neighbors as yourself & Loving the LORD your God with all of your mind, with all of your heart, with all of your soul, & with all of your strength, might or spirit is beyond natural which is supernatural...

2:43 That passage is actually in 2 Timothy 3:1-5 "But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of stress. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, inhuman, implacable, slanderers, profligates, fierce, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding the form of religion but denying the power of it. Avoid such people."

We are to love ourselves as we made in the image of God and if we are saved we are a new Creation, but we are not to worship ourselves. There is a line between appreciating who we are in Christ and selfishness self-obsession.

This video is a much better explanation of self-love than you did on Instagram. But for you and anyone who read this, I think there are several things that I want to add to make this issue clearer (some of these are my thought, some things again are just to give more clarity about RZ's thought here). Actually in the Bible, there are TWO kind of self love and TWO ways of the use of self-love. But for my comment here, I will also add the THIRD type which is actually often used by this generation. 1. The first one is the use of self-love in sense of putting yourself above others (2 Timothy 3). About seeing yourself with over confidence. And yes, this one IS a SIN. I agree with that. But there is the second one. 2. Self-love in sense of caring about your own needs and happiness. THIS IS the kind of self-love that Jesus mentioned in Matthew 22:39, when He said to love our neighbour AS we love ourselves. Further, in the Gospel of Luke there is also the story of a Samaritan who help the robbed man. And from that, we can conclude that the Samaritan is the neighbour of that robbed man. In this case, the Samaritan helped the robbed man because he may thinks "If I were this robbed man, I would hope that someone will help me this way". There is also another mention of this 2nd kind of self-love, it's in the Ephesians 5:28-29 which give message for every husband to love his wife as themselves. For this one it's NOT a sin. It's actually just a natural thing within our human tendencies. And we CAN apply this while caring more for others. 3. But when we talk about self love, what we mean is more like about "I'm special, I'm big, I'm important, I'm beautiful". What about this kind of self-love? My answer is that this is IMPORTANT but can be DANGEROUS at the same time. On one side, we should understand our total depravity that makes us bad and sinful. *But we should also remember that God loves us, He made us in His image, we are fearfully and wonderfully made, we are more precious than the birds, we DO have precious value* and that's the kind of self-love that we SHOULD have in moderation. It's about seeing ourselves like God sees us. This doesn't mean that we can be prideful or too much care about ourselves. Instead, *this view should makes us see God more and love HIM more* and make us *understand the value of others* so we can love them more like God loves them. There's also the things that should be balanced about understanding our depravity in sin that makes us dirty and unworth for God and understanding about how God loves us and sees us. Some preachers like Joel Osteen over-emphasize the human value. And it's *bad* because it reduces our need for the Gospel and make us self-centered. But there are also several preachers and Christian writers who over-emphasize the total depravity. For example like Michelle Lesley (you may know her articles if you are a fan of reformed baptist pastors like John MacArthur, Steven Lawson, Paul Washer, Todd Friel and the others) which said "You’re not awesome or great or imbued with some radical purpose or potential that will magically make your life phenomenal and give you oodles of self esteem once you discover it... You’re a dirty, stinking, rotten, rebellious sinner." For that one, I have to say that it's BAD and it's NOT a Biblical way to Evangelize. Making people feel ugly, like a trash, and have zero value at all IS NOT THE THING THAT GOD WANTS. Yes, we are fallen people, we are filthy rags. But HE STILL LOVES US and WE ARE PRECIOUS IN HIS EYES. There's a loving God up there that created us with special things and value. But we are fallen and lose our relation with God. Even we are worthless now. However, He still loves us and we can be HIS children if we accept His love and repent. So that's all I can say. Because there's a lot of people are getting triggered and angry because of the phrase "self-love is a sin" while they are struggling with depression, low self esteem etc. So yes, self-love is needed in some sense. But not secular self-love, but more like the Biblical way to see and care for ourselves while putting God and others above "love" for ourselves.

When people say "self love" don't they usually mean "self acceptance"? Literally being in love with yourself is obviously bad, but constantly self-loathing for no reason is also pretty bad.

Yeah, I think he's talking about "Is 'Narcissism' a Christian idea?", but self-acceptance can also involve accepting yourself as a Christian in a secular world, and not being ashamed to be a Christian.

I think you're generally on point, but it's a little short sighted too. A really basic example is depression. Lack of self care is a pretty good sign that they aren't loving themselves. A parent neglecting the needs of a child isn't loving that child like Jesus would, now are they? And a lot of depressed people will pour out the bulk of their limited energy to caring for others. So a depressed person, not taking care of themselves, is not loving themselves very much. Take the plank from thine own eye requires a certain amount of self awareness and self care, and you aren't going to be capable of either if you aren't loving yourself properly. You need to be honest and look at yourself thru God's eyes, aka eyes of love, and be willing to sacrifice things for your greater needs (eg deny yourself today for a better future tomorrow) otherwise you aren't respecting god. Hating yourself is a BIG issue for people who suffered abuse, and the self destruction that comes from it is damaging to others. You can't love anyone if you can't love yourself. !BUT! You can't love yourself without loving God first!! The Modern World really distorts the concept and encourages selfishness to a crazy degree. You're not wrong there. But good hearts are being torn apart by trying to be selfless. What is a loving Christian supposed to do with an abusive loved one demanding extremes from you? Honestly this issue is a trouble for me regarding Jesus saying "I'd an evil man asks you to go with them a mile, go with him 10" stuff. I've seen people torture themselves, pearls before swine, to "help" people who selfishly keep asking more and more. And I don't know if Jesus ever said anything for people in situations like that...
