Fela Kuti is to African music what Bob Marley is to reggae: its prophet. All contemporary forms of black music, from funk to electronic, owe something to the irresistible groove of the Afrobeat sound that he created. He recorded more than 60 albums and spent a lifetime fighting against political corruption in his homeland of Nigeria, where the people affectionately called him their "Black President."
Shot in Lagos at the peak of his career in 1982, this documentary contains interviews with Fela detailing his thoughts on politics, Pan-Africanism, music and religion, alongside unpublished versions of songs like ITT, Army Arrangement and Power Show. For all who wish to know more about an artist at the heart of African musical history, Fela Kuti: Music is the Weapon is an essential film.

i've been a fan of his since i first saw this documentary. Blew me away. I remember shortly after taking a cab ride, and the driver told me he was Nigerian after I asked. I told him I loved Fela Kuti, was he a fan? Guy practically screeched the brakes and said, "OH MY, YES, I LIVED NEAR HIS SHRINE! I TOOK MY SONS THERE! OH I CANT BELIEVE YOU MENTIONED HIM!" we just chattered excitedly about Fela and then when the ride ended he jumped out and gave me a big hug. He had the biggest smile and so did i. Music brings people together and that's something ill never forget.

My primary school mates and I used to stop over at Fela Kuti's original Kalakuta Republic (at Idioro) to watch his rehearsals. You wouldn't guess Fela was such a perfectionist. He would perform exactly as he would play for a paying audience. And if any of his musicians made a mistake, he would abruptly pause the rehearsal, and rebuke the person sternly. Then, he would continue as if nothing happened.

I can tell watching some of his videos that your description of perfection may be so right on. I have seen some videos where goes around on stage properly tuning instruments others are playing, while performing live, to suit his preference. I often imagine what a beautiful thing it would have been if Fela, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh ever met.

He has seen all the happenings in Nigeria today 40 years ago and has been prophesying about them through music but we mistook him for igbo smoker. None of today's pastors, doing guesswork and prophecy can have the see as far as Fela has seen or face the government the way fela did.

Fela was a Philosoper like my dad Awolowo and my humble self. We are still seeing the reality of all he said. He was an highly intelligent man, who believes in everything called Africa. Luther was also a Philosopher. They killed him because they were threatened by his influence and were hunted by their rude truths. But, the truth is a bitter soup that must be tasted by all. I’m thankful I lived not only to see him perform in California but his two sons as well, Femi and Seun. That history not only of the tragedies in his life and the government but the songs of struggles resonated with me deeply as a granddaughter of a plantation worker in Louisiana. Things are way far worse in Nigeria today than back then when Baba Kuti was being granted this interview. Then there were no such issues as the the Fulani Bandits, the Fulani Boko Haram, the Fulani Miyetti Allah, the Fulani killer herdsmen, the looter politicians who are being led by the Fulani politicians etc. To save lives and properties, the country must be disintegrated into different nations. Bravo to those ladies that stood by Fela in his days. They were tough and courageous. One wonders what became of the wives at the demise of the Afro beat king. Fela is commended for his philosophy. He was much loved by the University students and Fela always honoured invitations from the students. He was invited to many of the students' events at the University of Ibadan between 1975 and 1979; all the way from Lagos, Fela once attended (by invitation) the students week social event of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall to address the young undergraduate students! In 1996, I met a journalist in Chicago, USA who (having known that I was from Nigeria) claimed to have watched the live performance of Fela in the UK and rated the stage arrangement of Fela as the best he has ever observed. He also commended Fela's control of his artists.

Everything Fela sang about back then is still very much applicable in the present day Nigeria..Sigh The same player's that ruled & mismanaged Nigeria's resources are still alive today and are still at it. Sadly, they refer to them now as elder statesmen! I remember as a kid growing up and how they tried to demonize Fela, fast forward adulthood and I realized that Fela was more aware than most. Just 21 year old and doing personal and thorough research into this enigma. Very enlightening. My parents set a background knowledge for me as I grew up constantly hearing about Fela one way or the other and my Dad was a frequent visitor to The Shrine when Fela was performing. I thought Fela was overhyped and should be allowed to rest but I stand corrected. He is underhyped and will Live on forever.

I can only wish those who weren't opportuned to enjoy and live the experience that we had around this great son of Africa can get at least a day, week, or a month to experience and feel such level of joy. Nevertheless, it's important to put it out there for people to know that apart from the incredible pleasures derived from the sounds emanating out of his band's captivating blend of musical arrangements, he was greatly loved because of the awakened consciousness of so many young people through the lyrics of his songs. His music and legacy will surely live forever!

I get quite fed up when I listen to documentaries like this that exagerrates the conditions of third world countries like Nigeria to make their European audience feel good about themselves. The fact is Nigeria was quite a nice place to live in the 70s and 80s. Lagos was definitely not the most dangerous city in world in the 80s as that was a gross exaggeration by the narrator of this documentary. Things started to go wrong in the mid 80s but nowhere as bad as the current state of affairs. Nigeria has never fully recovered from the structural adjustment programme that was implemented in 1986.

Thanks for uploading. I ran into the DVD some time ago and bought it. After I watched it, I started considering uploading it if it wasn't on KZfaq yet. It's not just music history but also black/African history. The way the look in the singers' eyes changed after the violence against them is heartbreaking, and Fela's anger after they threw his mother out of a window is hard to ignore too. They became more than singers and musicians from that point onward.

The version of Power Show on this documentary has such an amazing spiritual melancholy behind it and also the exotic phrasing by Fela on sax sounds otherworldly - I've never heard better versions on any studio album or live recording. Wish I was there to experience it in full.

His music is the truth of how Nigeria was built. All things he sing about still happening after his demise. It’s so sad that he was hated by the Nigerian military because he spoke the truth and ready to sacrifice his life for the people, but most of the current musicians are all about cars, women, jewellery and lifestyle to benefit themselves and not for the masses. Nigeria will surely remain a corrupt country for life because even the so called men and women of God have joined have joined hands with corrupt politicians instead of speaking the truth. They have all failed us. Nigeria problem is not God problem. The problem of Nigeria is greed, selfishness and wickedness towards one another. If we have remove those three things I mentioned from the politicians the country should be one of the best in the world.
